  1. PTO? on Do Companies Punish Workers Who Take Vacations? · · Score: 1

At my company, vacation days, sick days, holidays are rolled up into PTO -- paid time off. The company tends to view PTO as theirs, not the employees. We have to take PTO on holidays (and usually the day after) and if we don't have time in the bank, too bad, it's now unPTO. We can no longer sell back PTO (there went the nice Christmas money). Give your two weeks notice and they buy back any unused PTO at 80%. There's a limit to how much PTO we can carry over from one year to the next (and it's not much). Managers are required to spend 4 of 8 PTO hours on-site, working, until they're down to the new limit. They're also required to spend at least 8 PTO hours per week, but it can't be the same day each week, nor are they allowed to bookend their weekends (Friday one week, Monday the next).

But if I do up and decide to take PTO on short notice (as in, that day), no one says a damn thing.

I work in the field. We use pagers to send out to the entire team that there's a service request. Yes, to the entire team. Yes, we still use pagers. Do you honestly believe that I'm going to pull off the freeway just so I can check to see if it's my call? If I can change radio stations then I can check the pager. No, I'm not going text. Yes, I am going to call dispatch to accept it because if the owner doesn't respond within 20 minutes of the page going out then the supervisor gets notified. Then it gets paged out again, plus I have the customer, dispatcher, and supervisor all trying to call me to find out why I haven't accepted it. Yes, stupid system. And, yes, I'm still going to look at the pager.

Yeah, yeah, don't respond to my own...

So we lived in Reno at the time. Nice, gambling town. Lots of casinos. They all have, I don't know what they're called, hot air vents/grating in front of the doors, blowing upwards. So Adam and I walking into the casino (about an hour after the check-out-encounter), and he's still wearing his kilt, and he decides that *now* is the time to do his Marilyn Monroe impression. He's standing there, with hair longer than that of most women, and a beard, as the vents blow his kilt up.

Everyone thought it was pretty funny and the security lady decided to get in on the act. She walks up and asks, "Sir, do you know what real men wear under their kilts?" And Adam says, "Nothing, but I'm wearing *this*!" and pulls up his kilt to show off his tie-dye boxers.

So, my friend Adam and I are standing in line at the check-out counter. Adam likes to wear kilts. The little girl in front of us points at him and says to her mother, "Look, Mommy! That man is wearing a dress!" The lady responded to her daughter, "No, Sweetie, he's wearing a kilt."

    "Mommy...What's a kilt?"

    "It's a dress for men."

I had a class where the professor made a big deal about a particular textbook being required. We never once opened it and it was the last semester that that edition was being used. Afterwards, we were all pretty angry and reported her. The school agreed to issue refunds on the texts, and she received a formal letter of reprimand. And I know that that dinged her on her tenure board because my father sat her board.
