In reality what we are seeing is American and European developers working on opensource prjects for free and the support and customization work going to India for $2 an hour. Perhaps we should revisit the "support and extend" business model?
I think part of the larger set of problems of US tech companies is that too few technially minded people find themselves in leadership roles. This question is actually symptomactic of the attitude. Someone with a PhD is a *leader* in their field. While working for some company doing what they tell you is definitly an option anyone with the abilities to get a PhD in a technical field should have the insights necessary to develop a marketable solution to a particular problem set ni their field. Yeah, I know this is a generalization but anyone going for PhD should not only consider academia and industry but entrepenaurship as well!! Small businesses fuel the attractive growth of the tech sector. While the big guys are offshoring everybody but the cleaning crew small tech startups will continue to innovate and employ. Most of my work experience has been with small companies and I have always wondered why so many otherwise independent minded tech types are averse to startups and instead opt for the big corporate udder?

Just in case anyone is suspicious I have no affiliation other than that of cutsomer iwth either of these operations. I just wanted to take a good opportunity and spread the word about a pleasant diversion, which is all gambling really is. In fact figuring out a decent mathematical model to predict races/games is as old as the games themselves!!

Computer science as a scientific discipline hasn't exactly been underfunded or anything. This question is a bit naive in that regard. All this boils down to is private and public funding of basic software research and development. As such the usual sources are government entities and large corporate interests. DARPA anyone? IBM, sun, apple, etc all have financial stakes in "open source". Probably what is needed is a streamlined mechanism for applying and receiving these funds but isn't that what CollabNet(sp?) was supposed to be doing? A recent look at their web site reveals them to be nothing more than shills for offshoring/outsourcing though.......

Unless you are an *outstanding* typist class lectures will occur to rapidly for you to get everything into a laptop. So you may lose information. Also, if you are a science major how the f!ck are you going to take calculus notes, chem notes, etc on a laptop. Are you that good at LaTex and touch typing? Use pencil and paper. Transfer to computer later. I'd not recommend a laptop if you are living in a shared space such as a dorm because they are easily stolen. With that in mind, get one of those old ginormous 486 tower cases >;) .
Production costs are so high still because, in part, of the fact that the people working in the studio are skilled and well compensated professionals. Wait, I know!! If you want cheaper CDs lets move music production to India!!
