It's not their fault you weren't careful with your password, now is it? I agree that their email (probably generic) wasn't very helpful, but you can't blame them for _you_ losing your password.

  3. This is NOT new. on Not A Graceful Recovery For HP Customers · · Score: 1

I work for an OEM in Wisconsin. This is NOT a new thing, nor is it an "HP" thing. Microsoft has made it so that the sticker with the license number is the important part. OEM's get the software a lot cheaper if they buy X stickers rather than X Sticker+CD OEM bundles. Lower Windows prices = Lower system prices. This has been happening since the later days of 98SE, continuing into ME, and most recently XP.
Always remember, when you buy software, you're not buying the software, you're buying the license (!sticker!) to use the software as defined by the EULA. You're not really entitled to the media unless you pay extra for it. Yes, I know, it sucks. Yes, I know, free solutions (linux, etc) are better. But yes, I know, that that's how it's done and there isn't much anyone can do about it because Microsoft provides that price incentive to OEMs and it's extremely hard for them to resist.

Not necessarily. It's quite possible (actually likely) that they have many blocks of IPs. They also have routers... There isn't much difference between this and a large corporation with 10,000+ computers except for geography. Using conventional techniques should stop broadcasts...

Well, according to their website, gigabit *is* the case.
    http://www.citylink.co.nz/services/index.html
"Hi-speed IP across the greater CBD. CityLink's own Broadband IP switched Optical Ethernet network (PublicLAN) provides high speed network connections between Internet users and ISP's and other xSPs. Select from 10Mbps, 100Mbps or 1,000Mbps, and a range of services to suit your business needs."

I would imagine that the "home-made" routers are for the slower (10Mbps & 100Mbps) connections.

  7. Re:WAN, not LAN, and other inconsistencies.... on In NZ, Sharing Ethernet With A Whole CIty · · Score: 1

Actually, it could be called both. By definition, a WAN is like a big LAN. However, WANs usually implement layer-2 WAN protocols such as Frame-Relay, ISDN, T(x), etc. Since this is using Gigabit *Ethernet* I believe it could also be considered a LAN.
There are some issues, though, with the article.
"Citylink runs at Fast Ethernet speeds of up to 1,000Mbps, about 65 times faster than a T1 line."
    Fast Ethernet = 100mbps
    T1 = 1.544mbps
    Gigabit Ethernet = 1000mbps
I think "Fast Ethernet speeds of up to 1000mbps" means that there's a gigabit backbone with 100mb uplinks with the "homemade" routers.
My 2 cents... someone please inform me if I'm wrong =P

I was meaning to say that you use the battery to directly power the [inverter] and use the other power source as a "switch" with the relays. Having it directly tied into the battery was to avoid having a plug in your cigarette lighter....

  10. Re:My Setup on Complete PC instead of a Car Stereo · · Score: 1

There are a couple of ways to do it. The cigarette lighter is, in many cars (such as mine) on all the time. However, there are many other electronic devices in the car that are 12v and are not *always* on. You can tell which turn on and off and which voltages they use by hooking a multimeter up to your fusebox. So that you don't overload whatever else is hooked up to that connection, you can wire your computer the battery directly (much cooler than having it plugged into your cig lighter!) and use the fuse connection to setup a relay system. Many car audio sites should tell you how to setup a simple relay system, too.
