    ICQ 2000 has more "features" than it needs, or that I want, I just want the name of who is online (and off line), a way to change my status and a message window, nothing more... I have turned off most of these "features" in ICQ, and I am currently looking for an alternative (that runs off of the ICQ network)... any sugestions?

    so what about those sites that require cookies to function properly? not the ones that track, but the ones that place data there so it can remember bits about you, or sites that gather certain bits of information from querystrings so they can process properly?

    Im guessing the wont "block" them but make them illegal to use, so the offending party who planbts a cookie will be punished via a fine or some such nonsence...

    its quite amazing how poor a rap that cookies have gotten, there are tons of usefull ways to uses them, we use them all the time to store variables that can be passed from page to page, we also use them to allow access to certain areas as determined by data contained within.

    my only real gripe with them is they just seem to take up room after a while...

    18 to 24 months, they say? They're wasting their time. By then, we'll have something better than MS office, and enough people using Linux to make it the new standard.

    sorry, dont see that happening, there is NOTHING on the horizon that even remotly looks like it will take on a new standard

    then they need to support it, thats what warranties are for, if its a mistake because of improper use then the user should be stuck with the promblem... in your case it needs to be replaced

    when you consider Unreal Tournament is 600 megs, windows is 200 megs, winamp is 6 megs, internet explorer is 8 megs... yeah I would say >1.44 is tiny

    on a side note, tinyserver is the BOMB! I currently run it on my machine and not once has it had any problems....

    For the immediate future iPod is expected to be an Apple-only device. In its existing forms it is not compatible with PCs that run the Windows operating system.

    I managed to get a copy of the pre "freeware" version and I thought it was very well thought out, I would like to see more done with it...

    Im typing on a PC runnning windows 98SE that hasnt been rebooted in 2 months...

    I also run a BBS on windows 98SE that, with the exception of the voluntary reboots, hasnt crashed on me since I built it in May

    but is .doc a MS standard? I seem to remember several years ago opening .doc files in notepad (or any other text editor) as they were
    (.doc)uments

    but ms has set standards, but not in the way .pdf, .gif, .html, .mp3 or .jpg has, they did it by forcing their product down peoples throats, or hijacking someone elses standard and twisting it to their own definition ([strong], [small],[marquee] in .html is a good example)

    oh yeah... like I want to go out and replace THOSE in the near future...

    records I can understand, large, bulky, easy to ruin

    tapes I can understand, tape hiss, eventually wear out, tape deack eat them

    cds? perfect audio, rugged, wont wear out... ummm, no thanks

    computers are digital devices, LCD watches are digital devices, calculators are digital devices, microwave ovens are digital devices, software is not a "device"... and even *if* it were this would have NO effect on software written places other than the USA...

    But its not to late for a develpoer to make a GUI for the Average Joe... Linux has recieved much press, its name is becoming more and more recognized... now is the time to develop such a GUI *if* that is the direction they want to take, if *not* then there isn't a war to begin with

    1) since you're an up and coming pop band, where are you going to get your promotion/exposure from?

    2) if people are downloading your stuff that means you might actually be good

    3) if you are good and people are downloading your stuff, some people will want to buy your stuff and go to your concerts

    4) if people dont know about you they wont purchase anything from you

    so how do you want it?

    (thanks to napster/gnutella/iuma.com/mp3.com I have found MANY new up and coming artists, and have bought their stuff... stuff I wouldnt have bought if I hadnt heard of them...

    I depends on the developer and the intranet, I work in an IIS enviroment, but we try to use JavaScript instead of vbscript (unless its server side, then it dont matter)

    but a vbscript engine would be nice for a few things that JS cant do
