I'm sure you're completely wasted right now but a further description of your marketing campaign and why you think it was so effective would be a great help to LUG's around the world. Was there some cultural aspect that you used to help you out or are Egyptians just dying to get Linux installed?

You needed to click to the second page. The macs are being used for image processing after the frames are scanned. The 4000 line scanning is only the first step in the archival process which is then followed by the image processing algorithm and probably some manual restoration (digitally of course) where needed. According to the article the image processing noticably sharpens the image along with other benefits.

In case you haven't noticed the drives on your laptop are typically 2.5in wide and much much thinner than desktop drives. Why is this important? Well the limiting factor in HD size is the aureal density of the platter (bits / area). This is currently limited to around 60 billion bits / sq in. So if you want smaller drives to fit in your small laptop then you'll have to live with lower capacities. The platters being used in both 3.5 in desktop drives and 2.5in laptop drives have the *same* aureal density so I'm not quite sure what technology you're waiting for to trickle down. I think what you're really waiting for is a Chiropractor's dream 10 lb laptop not for technology to trickle down. Of course bigger disks tends to mean more momentum and thus high power dissapation so the troubles of stuffing bigger drives into laptops just continues to mount.

And btw you can get 60 GB drives for laptops, that's a considerable amount of space. If you want more get an external USB storage cage or something similar.

I bought Santana's Shaman last month and it has the wonderful tracking technology built in. I was curious as to what the "Bandlink" thing did when I bought the cd (never heard of it before). Luckily, I went to their website first and saw the usage statistics crap and decided against installing it.

I read part way through the EULA (which is apparently available on their website but I couldn't find it) but I didn't see anything about allowing them access to all information.

I support the idea of adding content to cd's to make them more attractive to purchase ... but I don't want to have to give up personal privacy for those extras. If I just had to install and register I wouldn't mind, tracking is going too far IMHO.

Since I couldn't find the EULA online (as promised) i've taken the liberty of posting it online (hopefully its not illegal but oh well).
    Its available here
It weighs in at a hefty 12.8kB ... for text file!.

Well you can still try your alt of the week, just on a different server. The designers are attempting to create a more realistic economy and game. IN RL you can't have 10 jobs and pick which one you want to do each day why should you be able to in their VL?

Even still the developers made clear you'd be albe to relinquish skills and go back down the tree (your only set characteristic is your race). I think the ability to have characters on different servers + the ability to alter skill paths is an acceptable compromise.

The other factor is that mules and multiple characters destroy economies. Sure, you might use the account just to try out your alt, but someone else might be creating a whole guild of craftsmen to annihilate the competition ... all on one account. With production being automated while away from the game this would effectively create an unworkable economy where only the lucky would being able to support themselves.

You can still try out that character with your friends ... just convince them all to create characters on another server. Its not really *that* much of an inconvience is it?

I attend an engineering school in Canada and we have a nationwide engineering accredidation board that requires a certain amount of non-engineering courses within the cirriculum. Out of total of 155 credit hours we take ~9 complimentary credits dealing with global issues. In addition we have ~6 credits in courses put on by the engineering department that deal strictly with professional communication and writing. Another 6 credits or so deal with business and engineering. So around 15% of our degree is non-math/science/technial engineering. Does a similar situation exist at US instituitions?

Implementing the same or very similar design which he helped to design at another company would certainly be immoral if not infringement. However, if the engineer (?) wants to apply the thought process which he used to solve a previous problem that should not be infringing at all. That thought process is his personal possession which cannot be copyrighted or otherwise. Attempting to take control of someone's thought process would be a very slipperly slope and I doubt the courts would allow it. The previous company owns the designs which were implemented not the thought processes that created them.

More information is needed about how the previous design was created (was it with a team or ??) in order to render good judgement.

  20. Imagine this in an engineering department ..... on Georgia Tech Cracks Down on Learning · · Score: 1

As an undergraduate engineer I can barely contemplate the horror this sort of draconian policy could bring to our department. Luckily, our department encourages collaboration, however, harshly punishes cheaters. As our university (Simon Fraser University) has had several cheating scandals lately the crackdown has begun here as well. If we had that sort of policy like 90% of the engineering department would get failed out (although 60% do anyways).

I often provide help and guidance for my fellow engineers but I certainly never do their work for them and this sort of punishment is completely contradictory to the way I was taught to learn. I wish Georgia Tech luck enforcing this new policy ... and trying to recruit students next year.
