I prefer to think of her as a harsh mistress. What you should think about is that when Adam Selene is in charge the pedants will be the first up against the wall.
I am a guy and my wife laughed at me every time she'd walk by when I was reading it. But if I wasn't clear - the book's title led me to believe the book was about a how a female geek could become more of a geek - instead it was how women who aren't geeks at all can get along using modern tech primarily in the pc realm.
I think of someone who absolutely loves technology and spends lots of time with it out of choice as a geek. My wife is an incredibly competent programmer and loves math, but she doesn't really live for it. She is very happy going nowhere near a computer for days sometimes. She's really into sports and stuff too, which is somewhat anti-geeky in my mind.
That said - since I wrote this review a couple weeks ago I gave the book to a neighbor who doesn't know jack about anything to do with using a computer and she really likes it.
I never worried about backups. Then I watched this video and now I back up everything. For all I know this "Google" company is a couple seventeen year olds with an old 386sx in their mom's basement. I like their stuff but I can't depend on them to know how to protect my data.
That's the kicker isn't it? If the two are even close to even then XenServer just crushed it. Where I work we run ESXi - but they can afford it. It's nice to know if I wanted to do something on my own and I couldn't, that I would have options.
I update it via identi.ca which I update via im. twitter is where most people are at that I communicate with so that is where my posts end up - but I don't ever go to the twitter site. It doesn't need to be more than it is.
Well - I think that is part of why this O'Reilly thing is a big deal. Not only are they hosting the site, they are making a number of their books available in epub format. Hopefully this will help it gain momentum and we can get away from the nasty drm laden formats.
Nice. I am an American stoolpigeon - and not even remotely as hip or cool as those folks. I don't see it used too often by others, it being a pejorative term and all. Maybe they are being ironic or something.
Or you can just use another engine. I pretty much always use the search bar in firefox and I just switched it over to yahoo. I'll put it back after they get this fixed.
I'm a big Gibson fan and have been for quite a while. I started reading a lot of sci-fi in the late 70s and was a teen when cyberpunk really got going. But I guess maybe what wasn't clear is that Daemon really handles current, existing technology really well and there isn't much in the book that doesn't exist right now. I guess that's the difference.
Everyone keeps mentioning Cryptonomicon which I haven't read. The only thing I've read by Stephenson is Snow Crash, which I really enjoyed. But same thing - more speculative than I think Daemon is.
thanks. and zero payment was involved. I was mailed a review copy of the book - which I'm giving away - but I'm not going to lie for a free book, so this is just my honest opinion of what I think is a really fun book with some very cool ideas.

I'm an IT guy - and I like to read. I really enjoyed this book, more than I've enjoyed anything like it in quite a while. So I wanted to share that enthusiasm.
It's not cut and pasted from anywhere - I wrote it myself. I don't have a 'hard-on' for the author. I've never met him but he did do a good job with this book. I probably am sympathetic to the path he took to gaining a broad audience with self publishing.
So I'm not really sure just what you want to say - but hopefully this helps you to better understand where I am coming from since you seem unsure.
I linked to a clip of it on youtube when I submitted the review. But it sounds like the clip has been pulled and so the editor must have pulled the link.
You may ask, "So What?", she's a woman. And I'd have to agree. I've learned here at slashdot that you can't argue with a sick mind. But seriously folks, this is a government position that we have payed for. Shouldn't this be a case of 'you bought it, you name it'? And if so, I'm voting for an ordinary average guy instead of one of these hotshots. We keep letting these elite types run the show and there goes the neighborhood. It's not like we can fix it all by getting in a circle and singing kumbaya. These are dark times more fitting of songs for a dying planet. That's the inconvenient truth. All this typing has made my mouth dry. Got any gum? I hate having dry mouth before I head over to the church to talk to the confessor.

i've found that there is plenty of pull, no need to push.
not really.
I'll go. Tomorrow. Somebody get me a shovel and a suit.
yeah - then the nanobots go all wrong and reduce the moon to a lifeless planet of grey rock and dust. what will you do then?

I like the marketing for this The enterprise-class features you need at none of the cost. I'm thinking this is a pretty big deal.
does this mean metalhed77 wants to punch Alex Payne in the face?

That's funny because I got my reply in but everything went to crap right after that.
I'm running KDE 4.2 and a slew of kde apps on my xp machine and it was all done with a single installer.
I also run a couple GTK+ apps that installed GTK without me going out and doing a separate install.

tough to skate on the canals in winter without water.
It was all just for you - so I hope you enjoyed it. Life's been good and I like to try and share that goodness with others.
