Nice. Are you doing any kind of replication? How about partitioning? If so did you do it in house or hire somebody to help out with that. I haven't worked with Postgres in about 4 years - so I've lost touch just a bit with what's been happening there.

And are the apps using that back-end all custom or is there commercial stuff that can use Postgres? I'm especially interested in that on the warehouse side.

I'm an oracle dba - 10g RAC on AIX. I also look after SQL Server and MySQL databases. I run Linux at home and work. My machines at home I built myself. I love Star Trek, Star Wars and grew up on Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. I write code for fun. I was vice president of the RPG club at my highschool one year. I would have been president but the other guy out rolled me for it. I have a couple blogs but slashdot is my primary hangout on the web. I have never, ever been a 'marketing type'. And I may not meet your standard of 'geek' but I think I am one.

Those words are true. When you start working in an environment a little more complicated than 3 old pc's in your mom's basement - what people often perceive to be database problems can be networking problems. When all your data is on a san - when you are backing up to a VLT and you have 5 instances in your production RAC cluster - networking matters. So I am always looking to learn more.

At the same time - the gui tools for working with ip tables on Fedora are not where I would like them to be. This book really helped me to get a better grasp on how to understand and work from bash rather than getting frustrated. This is useful for me at home and work - as I'd rather not just say "Hey, I'm behind a network firewall already, I'll just turn the local one off so I can work".

Maybe your just a troll that got modded up - but I just wanted to make sure and set the record straight on this. I didn't see this go to the front page yesterday because I was walking around downtown Budapest. I'm here as tech support for a conference. I'm in Hungary for the first time, so any downtime I've had I've been sight seeing. It's a bit outside my normal work - more desktop support oriented. But since I'm a geek and not a marketing guy, I'm holding my own. Having read that book has already been valuable to me here as well.

Maybe that's why I don't get it. The environment I'm working in isn't large enough to have a lot of stuff just sitting around. I wish we did, but most of our stuff is going all the time. It'd be nice to have more redundancy but we just can't afford it.

We are using virtualization on some things - but mostly little stuff. I work with our primary production databases and we don't share those boxes. We are getting all we can out of them on our own. But I'm a dba - so in my opinion I never have enough resources.

That upgrade is on hold. The problems that knocked the latest Atlantis mission back into February have jacked up the schedule. So it was planned for August but now it will be later. I would think that with eol for the shuttle and hubble both rapidly approaching - any more problems or serious delays and it could get knocked from on hold to canceled.

tfa says, "With $200 machines being all the rage these days,". they are 'all the rage' within the geek community. one system has had a lot of attention outside the usual circles - that was because wal-mart sold it. this new system by shuttle isn't a big deal to anyone but us - and as i mentioned, it has received plenty of press in our circles. especially when you consider the fact that until just yesterday there was not a shred of substantial information out about the system.

When I wrote up a journal entry about it tuesday there were still no system specs to be had. just a picture and the $199 price.

to top it off - i don't even know just what 'all the rage' means other than generating lots of discussion. the only low priced linux offering that i've seen generating lots of sales has been the asus eee pc - which is $399. (couldn't find an article about it at cnn thought - it's all over the tech sites though.)
