  1. Does anyone care about this? on KaZaA Wants to Be An Official Content Distributor · · Score: 1

I lost all respect for Kazaa when they started threatening the guy who put out Kazaa Lite. Saying they would enforce their "rights" and not let someone "misrepresent" their software. Ya, god forbid someone steal your program and give it away for free. Or even worse, misrepresent people into thinking that the software included with Kazaa is a benefit to the user. Wait, isn't that what Kazaa is all about? Stealing and lying to people about their software?

  2. Licensing Clarification on University Sponsored Music Services? · · Score: 1

All artists are a member of one of the two big licensing companies. Either ASCAP or BMI. When radio stations for example license music, they pay X amount of dollars to each of the companies to be able to play any of the artist's music that the company represents. Most artists are a member of both companies so it's not an issue. This enables a radio station to play a song as many times as they want without paying a fee per song or every time it's played.

What would be nice is if a univeristy could make a similar agreement with ASCAP and BMI for mass licensing in order to run a file sharing network online on their LAN. I'm sure they already have some licensing in place if they are running a student radio station, or at least they should.

  3. Re:Pot Calling The Kettle Black on University Sponsored Music Services? · · Score: 1

That's the oldest and weakest argument there is. "There not losing money because I wouldn't have paid for it anyway!" But you have the music don't you? And did they get paid for it? Nope, not one dime. I'll agree with anyone when it comes to the Metallica/Napster thing, but alot of the artists out there are getting screwed. They're not only getting screwed by the RIAA, they're getting screwed by the very people that say they support artists. The RIAA get their money one way or the other. Either through advancements or from sales. The more people that buy the artists music, the faster they get their debt paid off to the record company, the faster they start seeing some money for their work.

It's amazing that all of the SlashNerds are coming out on this with guns blazing. "We shouldn't have to pay for other peoples downloading!" "The university is trying to profit!" Yadda, yadda, yadda.

For some reason when I read this I assumed that most people would be glad a university is thinking of ways to help their students "needs" and reduce their overhead as well. Wow was I wrong. While there are a few people that like the idea, it seems as if most are finding one reason or another to complain. If a university is willing to license music from a record company and offer it to the students at a small rate, I think it's a great idea. Sure, they're not going to have every artist or album known to man licensed, but at least it's a starting point to fixing an out of control problem. Maybe people would have a better perspective if they were the one's being singled out by the RIAA and being forced to pay a fine PER SONG.

Another ignorant post because people insist on attacking the wrong person. EVERY protocol has vulnerabilities, that's the facts. The patch was release almost a year ago for this same issue. If you want to blame anyone, blame the shitty admins who don't filter out traffic if they must use MSSQL over the internet, or flat out block it if they don't. I know people think it's cool to bash MS, but in this case it's directed at the wrong person. Besides, last time I checked the root-servers weren't running Windows and they went down like a date on prom night.

I would rather Yahoo stop spam from getting to my mail acocunt before they concentrate on stopping people from signing up automatically. I'm one of the few people who actually pay for Yahoo "additional" services. I thought I would get better anti-spam support. Not so far. I literally have 10 to 20 an hour and I can't block anymore because Yahoo only allows 100 addressed to be blocked. And considering the smammers are using 12374614187641874@optinmail.com along with other numerous addresses, it's impossible to block the majority of them. Hell I would even be happy if they would start allowing people to block entire domains. That would be a good first step.

Don't take offense to this, but your comment sounds like someone who doesn't know alot about businesses that require specific apps to stay in business.

Our office does a ton of work for medical centers and family practices that use software to manage their patient flow and medical records. These programs will ONLY run on Windows using SQL. Sure, there are 2 or 3 out there that run off SCO but the quality of program is inferior to the Windows versions.

NextGen, Alteer, Practice Partner, and Medical Manager our all Windows only apps. These 4 are the the most widely used systems in family practice offices around our area. They don't run on a *nix platform, and they never will.

It's not a case of having to replace workstations, hell that's the easy part. It's a case of the software only running on a specific platform and the server requires it.
