I have a set of these headphones... they work very well. They do exactly as your brother describes; cancel out engine noise but still allow you to hear other things. They will always accompany me on a flight; after using these you just can't go back to regular headphones.

However, I had to return mine (to Best Buy) twice because the first two pairs had problems with noise reduction only working one side.

Maybe this technology could be used to avoid embarassment due to sloppyness... if you spill beer on your white smart T-shirt, then the whole shirt could change color to match the stain; so instead of wearing a white t-shirt with an ugly beer stain, it would just change to an off-white color to match the dried beer... of course, this all depends on whether you're drinking some cheapo lite beer or something dark like Guinness....

I suppose you could just change the shirt, but what if you're not home, or just plain lazy?

  10. Backspace problem on PBG4? on OroborOSX: XDarwin Aqua-Like Window Manager · · Score: 1

Has anyone had problems with backspace when using Mac Gimp or NEdit on OS X with OroborOSX? On my PBG4 it seems that the Delete key (where the backspace key is on PCs... to the right of the += key and above |\ key) acts as a delete key and not backspace... i.e. it deletes the character to the right of the cursor, not the left like it should... its pretty annoying... I would like to use NEdit for the color syntax highlighting but this problem is too annoying so I'm still using emacs (which is fine, I like emacs but it seems the terminal version that ships with OS X does not support color! and I REALLY like color syntax highlighting). Anyway, anyone noticed this? Is there a solution? Thanks

I second this... I am a student (not for long, though... done in December! hell yeah) and for years I've been a PC guy, but then one day last year I just got sick of dealing with Windows crap after my PC died. (I have and still do use Linux but that can be a pain too) and bought a G4 tower and put OS X on it. (I never would have gone to the Other Side if it wasn't for OS X... I'm not a a huge fan of Mac OS < OSX, I need/prefer UNIX) I now also have a PowerBook G4 (bought a few weeks before Apple introduced the new PBG4s... should have checked those Mac rumor sites more carefully... D'oh! Oh well, not a big deal) and I love how everything "Just Works", even X windows when installed via fink and combined with OroborOSX windowmanager... Just my 2 cents, sorry if this is a little incomprehensible, I haven't had enough coffee yet today :-)

  12. Re:How sureptitious? on Digital Camera Wristwatch · · Score: 1

There is no way to take pics without the LCD going into viewfinder mode, but people have no idea I'm taking pictures. It just looks like I'm checking the time. Nobody (read: non-geeks/techies/whatever) would never think you could have a camera in a watch. When I show it to them, they are floored and invariably mention James Bond, the FBI, CIA, etc. Of course, they are more watchful now that they know... whenever I go to check the time (even if I really am just checking the time!) my girlfriend tries to hide :-)

but if you don't tell anyone, they'll never know. I mean, how often do you closely examine someone else's watch while they are wearing it? Of course, if its right in their face (ie, she's bending over to pick up the tip) then maybe they'll notice... :-)

  13. Re:Battery Life on Digital Camera Wristwatch · · Score: 4, Informative

On the contrary, the battery life is very good. I have the previous version of this watch that only takes B&W pics (and at a lower resolution, but it holds 100 pics, not 80... ha!). However, the new watch has the same B&W LCD screen (16 level grayscale, no backlight) as the old one. You only get color pics when you download them off the watch. Anyway, I have had my watch for months and have probably taken well over 2000 pics and the original battery is still going strong. The watch is pretty cool, too. The pics are really too small to be real useful, but it sure is fun to have. :-)

I don't know about Linux, but there is active development of NetBSD (NetBSD/hpcarm) that runs on Jornada 720. I have not tried it, though, so I'm not sure of the current status. Here is the web page: www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcarm

There is also a guy (in Germany I think) named Keuchel Rainer that has ported lots of UNIX-type tools to Windows CE (focusing on Jornada 720). This includes many command line tools such as tar, telnet, gzip, rsh, etc.. plus Perl (!) and an X Server (!!). Perl seems to work well, but aparently thare are a few limitations due to the WinCE operating system, but I have not had any problems yet, probably because I still a newbie when it comes to Perl :-) The X server also works well (although a little slow) and includes some ported X apps, such as twm, xeyes, xedit, xcalc, and xpdf. I have not yet tried it with remote X apps, but i'm sure it works. He has also ported emacs to CE! Check it out: www.rainer-keuchel.de Click on Software at the bottom.

There is also a Yahoo! winCE dev group (started by Mr. Rainer: groups.yahoo.com/group/wince-devel

  17. Macintosh Version on Myst III: Exile Review · · Score: 1

I recently got this game, and it runs flawlessly on my G4 system, very fast and smooth. Its a good game too, especially if you are a fan of the Myst series (and I am) but, like Riven before it, it hasn't captured and sucked me in the way Myst did in '95 ('96?). Oh well, its still very enjoyable. I have read on various message boards however that people with older macs aren't having such luck (my system is a 450DP with Radeon video and 704MB RAM... maybe this has something to do with it?) But I think they maybe could have come up with a better (ie, compatible) copy protection scheme, rather than purposefully putting in bad sectors on the discs and screwing people with older cdrom drives over. I guess I just got lucky :-)
