Actually, a lot of people do think the commercials have a bit of elitisim in them. My roomate has a Mac and he hates the switch campaign for that reason. I personally would like to punch the bitch in the "I saved Christmas" one, and the dude "Get out of your windows world" is annoying as well.
If that's the case then kindly explain to me why anybody uses MS? It's marketing, right? 90% of computer users in the world stick to MS because of marketing, or maybe you'll say the BSOD, or the monolopy status forces users against their will.
Kindly explain to me one thing that a lot of businesses do that you can't do with MS software. If there were a lot of things in this category then people would ditch MS like a dirty whore. Unfortunately for your argument, there aren't many.
Show me an environment that's as rich feature wise as MS. I have never encountered a problem that couldn't be fixed, and I can verky quickly solve most projects.
The "XML Standard" dance really isn't that important to MS, unless flocks of users quit using their Office suite because it's not XML capable. That probbly won't happen, because most users just don't care that much how their document is stored, as long as they can open it with the tool they already have.
I have to believe that they see some other benefit from offering XML, I won't guess if it's for their own internal use or for their user base.
You'll have to explain why it sucks. I'm sure you'll say something like "Because you don't need to have a scripting engine in a Word Processor, Email Program, or Spreadsheet."
These are extremely powerful tools, I've automated many tasks, I can learn a new object model with about 2 minutes of research. Unless there's support for these types of things many MS Office users won't switch, because they don't have a reason to.
It's a classic MS/Linux argument, MS goes for features, Linux goes for security/stability. For me, MS security when patched has always got the job done.
I wonder how many people think that everything on their preferred OS is better than everything on a competing OS. Obviously Windows is good at some things, it's the most used OS in the world. Equally obvious is that it has some shortcomings and shouldn't be used in every situation.
What a load of FUD. Do you know how much of a backlash there would be if MS put a trojan in their products, and it was discovered by anyone, possibly by noticing their computers randomly connect to the US? That would be a absolutely stupid business decision. Oh, and even if you can look at the source, trojans can still make it in there without people noticing immediately. Better check every bit of source code every time there's an update to any package.
You insult a person when they're asking how to switch to your beloved platform.
MS might compete with OSS, but they're not out to destroy you. They might feel a little pressure from some aspects of OSS, but the vast majority of their decisions have NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU.
Go hang out with RMS and you guys can sit in your lofty seats and develop software for the GNU/Hurd platform. I'll be making loads of cash developing MS software, and I won't think twice about your trivial moral judgement.
Okay, I didn't read all the comments, and I only did brief research to make sure I was correct, but nobody has seemed to mention that recent versions of Pkzip have been known to contain Spyware, such as TSADBOT. My mother had this on her machine, and I'm pretty sure it was from Pkzip.
Actually the thief probably stole it for a client who is trying to obtain all three remaining copies of this book of logic.
Each copy has slightly different sets of drawings, and it is believed that when the correct drawings from each are put together that whoever reads from the book will have extreme powers of the mind, and be able to perform strong feats of logic, such as getting rid of religion.
Here's a google search for calendar components. You'll notice the first 20 pages at least have source code available. If that isn't enought then you're just bitching because you don't want to do any work at all. Rarely have I been given a project where the whole thing is laid out in source code for me, but every single time I need an example of how to do something I can find it. Usually at MSDN, but if not certainly from google.
Maybe I'm off base here, but how many of the exploits really had to do with the fact that VBA and the script engine are integrated with Office? Sure, there were definitely several exploits, but I don't think it's nearly as many as were caused from buffer overruns in code.
And I don't think they should change the platform design either. They should fix the security holes somehow. Automation of office is a HUGE feature for custom solutions, I've probably automated every singe office product except for Powerpoint, most of them several times for different projects.
For the sake of this reply I'm forced to confess that I'm a Windows developer/user. I started off on Microsoft, got a job using micorsoft, and frankly I've never had a need to use anything else. That doesn't mean I'm not open to other solutions and ideas, and in fact since I started reading Slashdot I've learned a thing or three.
It was slow going at first. When I first got here, I would get infuriated by the zealots who would bash to hell anything related to MS. Imagine that all your knowledge is in a particular subject and you read post after post on how stupid/horrible that is and how you're a sheep etc. Of course you're going to be defensive, and certainly not receptive.
That was exactly what happened to me. I would attack Linux whenever I could, be it in conversation with friends, or with clients. My facts weren't usually backed up by much more than the fud I was angry about, but it was the party line of the opposing view.
After a while I simply got tired of the anger, and I take a lot of what I read with a grain of salt. But I am still able to appreciate other reasonable, politely spoken opinions. While I can understand most arguments, I certainly won't be preached to. The Open Source community could learn a lot from your tolerance based point of view. Well, it's not just Open Source, everbody could use a little tolerance, Mac heads & Windows zealots too.
And just how did this higher being itself get wrought into existence? You see, we have the same problem comprehending the existence of a God as we do the existence of the universe, we can't comprehend things which would have to be timeless.
dude, a GUI sends commands, a command line sends commands. One method is no more intelligent than another. That's great that it works better for you particular situation, and you should obviously only hire people with the specific skills that you need. But do really think that if somebody can understand the intricacies of a major database system, that they couldn't learn the freaking command line?
Back in Rome it used to be a popular practice for men to have sex with young boys. If you look throughout history, morals change radically over time. So while there might be morals within a society, that doesn't mean there's an absolute.
How are we responsible for cancer? And I didn't choose war, somebody else a long time ago that I had nothing to do with chose it, and I have to suffer the consequences. I blame it on God because it's a framework for failure.
Unfortunately, that perspecitve is the only thing my intuition and reasoning allows me. I simply _cannot_ believe that my life and this conscience will last forever, that's something that requires faith, which I was born without.
But if the purpose of this life is to choose what we want to do for the rest of eternity, I tend to feel that an almighty being could have found a better way for us to make this choice, or even not allow us to make this choice at all. What lesson does the crack baby learn when it dies fresh out of the womb?
And how do we know what we are pursuing is good? On 9/11 the terrorists thought they were doing good. Are they to be rewarded for all of eternity for pursuing something that they believed to be right, or are they cursed to hell because it was truly evil. And if they are cursed to hell, then it will be because of the evil in this world, what they were spoon fed their entire lives.
That's simple. If I'm a God I don't present this obviously difficult puzzle to creatures with limited capacity. I skip that and go straight to the part where we all live together in harmony for all of eternity.
However, what other people do with that ability is not up to me, and they do some absolutely horrible things. So horrible, that if there is a God, I would like to know why the design of this train set was so horrible.
But realistically I just don't think it was designed by an all knowing, all good God.
I have a problem looking at disease, world hunger, war, and the myriad of other evils in this world and not believing that this existence was more chance than the design of an absolute all-knowing all-good being.

Get off your high horse. You're not a better person because you quite smoking weed and don't watch t.v. You're a different person, that's all. If you're happy, great. But don't point your finger at people and insult them.
Wish I had mod points. I hate to see stuff like the parent post at +5, which is just so much FUD.
Oh well, that's the cool thing to do around here. Slashdot is like one big Switch ad, it just varies who's being hyped.
Actually, a lot of people do think the commercials have a bit of elitisim in them. My roomate has a Mac and he hates the switch campaign for that reason. I personally would like to punch the bitch in the "I saved Christmas" one, and the dude "Get out of your windows world" is annoying as well.

Wow, what a sane post, nice to see.

So in summary, if you overclock this chip, it will either be slower, or faster, or right in line with what you would expect.
Thanks!:)

Check Google.
From the first hit in the search: "Aside from the spyware,
PKzip is a great, easy to use "free" zip utility software"
I wonder if that's part of the new business plan?

By that logic, any person in any country which has a military is indirectly responsible for the deaths of others.
I personally think that it's a honorable profession, and a necesary one.
