Here's a hint- speak argumentatively and ye shall be treated argumentatively. You took your one experience and your tone/phrasing implied linux was crap because your particular setup or multi-card reader didn't work and that windows was therefore the best on that point alone. My point was, my Lexar card worked for me so obviously not all multi-card readers have problems and that depending on what hardware you buy, it may not work on windows, linux, or both. Some of its luck of the draw. I'm surprised a SanDisk didn't work for you- they're not exactly el-cheapo- but generally speaking (not necessarily in your case) if you buy better quality it's more likely to work. So all I'm saying is, multi-card readers can and do work, and I've run into my fair share of devices (especially under Vista) that just show up as Unknown. Plus, when you have more than one of those and you're trying to set up one of them you can really mess up your system trying to tell one of the other Unknown devices to be something its not.

I originally felt that you were trolling and the bzzt was to say nice try, but multi-card readers do work. After a scathing reply, I'm still not sure what to make of your original post. Internet is a tough medium since emoticons lie or aren't used. All I ask is, don't assert that since your multi-card reader didn't work, linux sucks and windows rocks. There's so many posts like that around here you get lumped along with all the trolls, whether you mean to or not. (That's my poor attempt at extending an olive branch with an explanation)

Task: Make a SanDisk multi card reader work under Linux and Windows. Same machine dual-booting between XP Pro SP2 and Fedora Core 6.

    Fedora:

    Boot and login
    Plug card reader in
    Wait a few seconds
A nice little window that has the files on the MMC/CF/MemoryStick appears on the desktop
    Done.

so, bzzt. Try again. I've got a Lexar multi-reader that I've used for every format under the sun and FC 5, 6 and 7 all work great.

Depending on what hardware you try, you could end up mucking about on google groups under windows for why a seemingly simple, universal device like a multi-reader still shows up as "Unknown Device" or why "Windows could not find a driver for your hardware, please contact the manufacturer". The same is true of Linux and Windows- buy non-cheapie hardware and it'll be more likely work.

    Thanks for the link.

  13. My letter on Guitartabs.com Suspends Under Legal Pressure · · Score: 1

I wrote a letter to the press inquiry address of my favorite band, The Killers:

I'm a hobbyist musician (I play at home, alone) trying to learn and
improve myself at guitar. You may be aware of the events of the last
year or so where most of the guitar tablature sites are being shut down
due to supposed copyright infringement. My thoughts on what a tablature
really is versus what sheet music really is are perhaps outside the
scope of my letter to you. I have purchased a license to listen
('purchased' a physical CD of) every album the Killers has released as
well as some singles and remixes on iTunes, and my wifes sister at one
point dated the bassist- so we love the Killers all the more. Long story
short, regardless of what I think of tablature's supposed risk to your
income, I'm more than happy to pay for the ability to play the killers
songs at home, in private, and remove my eardrums if I must (in order to
prevent my brain from inadvertently recording the song) if the band or
its copyright holders were willing to make the tablature (not even
asking for sheet music) available for a price. Similarly, many groups no
longer even print their lyrics in the CD booklets and often I spend
years wondering what the heck the real meaning of the song is- every
once in a while someone says what they think a word or phase was and
it's like a lightbulb going off 'ohhh, so they weren't singing about
killing the granny, they were talking about winning at the Grammies!'.
The two Killers albums I checked don't have lyrics, though I can just
about sing along to all of the songs (in my car, alone, with no
recording devices, with no written lyrics). The point of all this is,
I'd be happy to pay for my right to further my enjoyment of the Killers
songs (which I've already 'paid' for, you've got my buck, sometimes more
than once). I urge the Killers to set up a way to have access to the
lyrics and tablature, even if for a price. Ultimately, I believe the
information should be included with the 'purchase' of the CDs, but just
having the information available officially would be a step in the right
direction for music lovers everywhere. Please, let me love the Killers
    even more.

    Thank you for your time.

I signed up for DSL, they said from my location I could get a 'whopping' 1 Mbit connection with 256k up for $39/mo- after getting hooked up and paying some $60 for the modem, I found the connection was bombing about every 5 minutes due to excessive errors. They dropped my rate to 512k down, 256k up and kept my fee the same, how thoughtful. After my IP phone ate all my bandwidth for work-related calls and brought my work-related SSH connections to a crawl such that I couldn't do both (eg, couldn't do my job) I switched to cable. I'm not outside the city limits, and in fact I'm on a large residential street right next door to a school. Aside from a bunch of 'planned' maintenance that they can never tell me about and a summer of highly intermittant connectivity (SNRs would decrease during the heat of day and drop for hours at a time and come back in the evening) that took 12 trips to resolve with their usual 1-2 weeks between each visit where they'd come and the connection would of course be working when they came and about 12 minutes after they left would shut down... anyway, ever since it has been incredibly reliable and they've even increased my speed for $3 / month. I used to get about 600kbytes/s down and 30kbytes/s up, now closer to 1MB/s down and 60kb/s up. Although I'm reasonably happy with it, the 'planned' outages always get me since I often work through the night. I asked a year ago how to find out about them and they had an email list they were working on setting up... I gave them my address, never heard a peep.. asked the other day and they're working on a website that will list these... i'll believe it when I see it. If I could get reliable / fast dsl for the same price as my cable internet (~$45/mo + tax/fees, own my own modem) I'd switch back because it was rock solid once they knocked me down to a crawl.

You're implying the BSD license won't hold up in court. Within the scope of your argument, there's no difference between the BSD license and the GPL license. Just putting your code under BSD license does not give them ownership of the intellectual property and they cannot legally patent it. They may get away with it until someone steps up to the plate, but if you weren't keeping your code in a non public place where no one can verify its age, you'll eventually win in court and be entitled to lots of legal fees.

TiVo can't do a damn thing if you buy one and modify it, unless you connect to their service. They have a right to refuse service to anyone, and they choose to do so for anyone that tries to connect with a detectably altered box. Sure, you have the right to modify the box, but they can then refuse you service. It's a very simple construct. You have a right to modify your car, or your gas meter, but they have a right to take away your license or cut off service.
