No I dnot get it. Which profits exactly does AOL draw from software that has to be paid by other branches of the company. In case of AIM I might be able to understand it, but Netscape? Why should AOL pay Netscape if they don't expect any revenues from it?

  2. Re:Investment in the Future on Mandrake Asks for Support · · Score: 1

I doubt that AOL is needing the money just to pay for it's other projects.
First of all, what reason do they have to run so many projects that do not return any profit?
Then, AOL does have some competitors, if they really could go down with the prices, Internet access would probably be much cheaper.

I don't see why it limits movie producers' creativity if they cannot make ever more violent films. And do you think parents do have control over what their children are watching. If your child is say 14 years old you will not always ask, what it is doing in the evening. As a matter of fact parents cannot control what their children are watching even if they wanted to. That is why there has to be a limit given by some other institution.

In the danger of getting modded Offtopic, but IIRC is Mozilla based on the Netscape sources and therefore you cant really say it is only 4 years old since Netscape is far older. BTW Netscape is also older than IE.

And to compare version numbers of a M$-product with those of any other product is also not very informative since M$ simply increases the numbers to make the product look like it has greatly improved, like when they changed from Windows 95 to 98.

So what you are trying to say is that apple should start producing usual pcs just slower and cheaper? I doubt this would be of any good to them. They certainly would lose their old customers. On the other hand uncle owen doesn't _need_ a brand new xtra-fast computer with top of the line hardware. But uncle owen doesn't know this and in my experience only looks at the numbers in front of the GHz, GB and $. If apple were to produce cheaper PCs uncle owen would think they were of bad quality and he would need a more expensive one. So Apple would lose their old customers without getting many new ones back.

I think at school it really helps to be able to do a lot of calculations in your head. It simply helps in mathematical problems to see properties of the numbers involved in it (i.e. noting that there are only squares or something like it). If you only use calculators in school you dont learn that. But if you want people to know something of mathematics they should be able to solve some simple problems. Grade school is not about teaching kids how to become an accountant, but teach them something of the science.

Why not a Palm? I really prefer a Calculator because the keyboard is made for exactly that cause. A touchscreen like on a Palm wouldn't do for me. Then I'd be faster calculating in my head.

A laptop on the other hand is much larger in size and needs a long time for booting, so you cant use it for quick calculations. Also it is quite a lot more expensive and if you just need it for calculations this additional expence is not neccessary. In addition to this the power supply of a laptop is much worse than on a calculator. My TI-92+ can live on its battteries for 4-5 months. On a laptop I would have to recharge every few hours.

I am not so sure about this. Plants need more than just some oxygen. First of all I don't know about the soil on mars. You will also need Nitrates in the ground and I am not sure about them. Basically you are right. The problem I see is that the government might be able to put it to bad uses. If you allow certain control this might be ok while there is the current government. But remember what happens when a person like Hitler gets the power. He may put the existing infrastructure to his own bad uses. That is the time when you see you shouldn't have allowed the control, because it could be used to your own bad.
