At some point in time long ago the Arab world ceased to be significant in terms of global culture and science. It's like they simply stopped after leaping so far ahead. At one point China also sat in this position and then mysteriously went into "idle".
In recent times the west has been the source of the vast amjority of advancements but I keep wondering when we're going to come to an abrupt halt for no apparent reason.
Maybe we won't and maybe the world is coming to a point where the whole darned mess will go forward at the same time but somehow I doubt it.
I'd be more concerned about letting Geraldo Rivera close to the wreck. All it's going to take is the revelation that there's an "air pocket" somewhere in there and we'll be witness to the live airing of a "Charles Darwin's SECRET vault" special.

Ok, so maybe that's a tad on the draconian side but seriously, do we actually want just anybody tossing trash into orbit for the vanity of people with more money than sense?
I particularly like their poll at the bottom. "Are Mac users smarter than PC users?" or something close to that with a "yes" or "no" choice.
If the total number of people online is divided between a relative few Mac users and a vast majority of people with a PC on their desk (translate that as "Windows") how could they possibly not expect that to result in an overwhelming "No"?
At the moment it's 45% "yes" and 55% "no". Either the Mac users are heading there in large numbers, the PC users aren't bothering with it, or a bunch of people using PC's think that Mac users are smarter.
My vote? Mac users are smarter. It's probably a localized thing and not widespread but almost every single person I know in I.T. goes home to a Mac at the end of the day (or granted a PC running Linux or FreeBSD) just like I do. I make money working with Windows because it's a mess. When I get home I want something that works.
No problem, a lot of people are confused by this so it's not like you're the first person to get this wrong. Let me clear it up for you.
You see, in the case of the Mac they can run games but won't run them before they've been properly beta tested by Windows users. Once enough of them have called for technical support and a majority of their problems have been worked out then, and only then will the Mac conceed to running a game.
PunchMonkey is right in his reply to your post. They aren't a single entity at all but let's forget about that for a moment and for the sake of argument lump them all together and call them one. Having done that then the answer is indeed "Yes, the want it all ways".
They've always wanted it all or rather both ways. That's what they do. That's how they've always done it.
"The Recording Industry" is based on a business model that can be summed up neatly as "Fuck everyone above and below you as hard and as often as you can" and it's been an accepted way of doing business for so long that they'll fight to the death to continue doing it.
I don't doubt for a moment that they see absolutely nothing wrong with how they go about their business.
Dude, go ahead and smile. It WAS funny. Now if it really happened then no, it wouldn't be funny. I can agree with that. On the other hand I laughed outloud at the post.
Agreed. He should simply take a pass for the remainder of the series run. The wonderful thing about television is that if you think "This should end" then you have the power to make it so.
I think it's still one of the funniest shows on television though and I'll keep watching it.
"Mmmmmm tax dollars (imagine "teet sucking" sounds here). Mmm Mmm, free money. I love the taste of this fat government nipple....more free money when I leave! (more sucking sounds)"
I love it, better pay than most of you suckers out there pulling your own weight, better benefits too! No accountability and the right to be rude as hell to any member of the public who dares question anything I do!
Bwahhahahahahaa!
HA!
I want a raise and I'm takin the rest of the week off (and I can because I get FOUR FUCKING WEEKS of vacation a year whether I've done anything to deserve it or not).
Seriously, some of us might but I think it's pretty much a forgone conclusion that it's going to happen. If it does so what? We're a species that contaminates everthing we touch and everywhere we go. What will make Mars any different?
I don't see us changing our S.O.P. so why try? Just get there, start working on setting up some sweatshops (build cheap domes too, lets get us some Total Recall three breasted hookers while we're at it) and get to work planning on polluting the hell out of the next place.
Well, in my first position working for local government I was sorely underpaid and overworked (along with the other 5 "teet suckers" in my department. There we had no possibility for a pension too. Does that make you feel any better?
Hey, don't forget that I finally got Linux to boot on my electric toothbrush this morning. That distro is coming soon and will change the world in the exact same way that Linux on GameCube will.

Ok, just to be fair I tested this and Google returned exactly one bad picture of a pair of boobs and it didn't even come from a porn site (yeah, I turned off the mature filter).
To add insult to injury it didn't even show the whole thing AND they were Britney Spears boobs (possibly).
Google, get back to work and fix this ASAP. I'm sure Microsoft is already making a special effort to focus on the "teen boobs" market and planning on showing additional hits for users of Internet Explorer.
Well I think that would be obvious wouldn't it? The taxpayers pay my salary and they pay for whatever portion of my retirement the county takes responisibility for. Is this the part where I hear a lengthy diatribe about government workers sucking on the fat teet of the people? I hope not because I work for my money just like you or anyone else does. The county gets it's moneys worth out of me every day.
Just because I don't live in fear of losing my job does not mean I don't work.
If that's not where you were going then nevermind.
I work at the county level and I couldn't be happier with my position. My pay is pretty good, not great mind you but at least pretty good. It gets better in small amounts every year though. Raises are regular if not spectacular.
My job security is excellent and that's almost the best thing about it. It gets beat out by my retirement plan. Here we get a set amount deducted from our paycheck every month which my county matches at 220%. Basically when I walk out the door here in another 19 years I'll get a raise. No trying to figure out how to live on a reduced income for me. Cost of living raises continue for the rest of my life (obviously "merit" raises cease when I retire) and of course I've get to keep my medical and dental for life too.
When I die my wife keeps getting my check till she dies (which costs a bit more, I think I throw in another $7 a month for that option).
The benefits are great but it's not like the job stinks. We stay pretty current and there's never a shortage of stuff to do. Since most of my users are also in this for the long haul I'll be supporting a lot of the same people for a very long time. If you want stability this is about as stable as a 21st century IT position gets.
I suspect your probably right. 64 bit x86 is what Intel is going to use to counter the appalling sales pitch that "We're selling you a 64 bit processor while that Intel based machine only has a 32 bit processor". That's going to be heard far and wide once they find themselves being compared to Apple G5's and Opteron based systems. Itanium wasn't going to be the chip that helped that situation. What little most consumers have heard about it wasn't good regardless of whether or not it was true or fair (and it might have been both, that's beside the point) so Intel's going to get themselves in that 64 bit crowd (regardless of whether or not it means anything to the consumer using the computer and again, that's beside the point).
Intel knows as well as anyone that consumers prefer the bigger number and like to see the word "compatible" on things they buy.
Just a minor point but Spain hasn't been a "major power" for a very, very long time. Spain isn't even a minor power. While we're there we might as well point out that England and Germany also don't exactly fall into the "major power" catagory either.
England doesn't fart without checking with Washington first and Germany hasn't had a pair since the end of WWII. They're "Legacy" powers who get accorded respect because the United States feels silly just sitting in the big power room with China.
No there is not.
