sure, its legally questionable. but I think its ok to analyse/reverse-engineer security systems. They analyzed the bikes, had some fun and made it public. Next time CallABike will come up with something better.
Meh, I expected the usual installer and not a tarball with rpms. I could unpack them but soffice refused to start with 'The application can't be started. An internal error occured'.
If I have problems with some specific hardware I look into the manual or if I need some tech-specs like horizonal or vertical frequencies of a monitor. Most of the time those QuickStart guides are useless for be because they focus on setting up the hardware in windows environments.
I bought a new TFT Flatscreen and the manual was provided on a CD. My luck was that the screen accepted my XOrg settings and worked right out of the box. The manual itself was a set of html pages that didn't work under linux using firefox due to some hardcoded uppercase filenames (probably javascript) that couldn't be found. If instruction manuals are provided only on CD - please as a PDF.
I like to read news on the internet (mainly those of larger national and internatial newspapers), but I won't cancel my newspaper subscription. Its just nice to read in a real newspaper while commuting. The internet can't replace that. I even started to buy a large weekly newspaper with in-depth reports. Reading longer texts can be a pain in front of the computer and I prefer in those cases the dead-tree edition.
Downloading them with BitTorrent is really nice and the only option to see the original episodes.
Usually I have to wait until the episodes are shown over here and they get dubbed for the english-inapt audience. Furthermore TV-BitTorrent sites give me a larger choice of series that I can't get to see here.
Google just uses their knowledge in the field of searching and data-mining to create new services for its users. plain old google to search the web, gmail to search and archive your mail and a desktop search to search and manage your office/media files. it basically all comes down to the management of data.
Mircrosoft does everything. they want to provide everything for everybody. this is pointless. they copy other peoples ideas and sell it as their own. ok, they do own research as well. the only area where Microsoft seems to be good in is marketing.
this is what came to mind after I read the story headline.
is there any classification about types of black holes? if they collide will they just merge? can black holes get bigger? if A sucks B in is A larger afterwards or has it the same 'size'!?
... for a decent iTMS like online-music store that has everything to buy online thats available to buy on CD in stores. Using fair prices and a platform open to all modern operating systems.
I don't like to look for something on iTMS without finding it, like Katie Melua or Vienna Teng.
Walking around to different music stores is ok, but using 10+ different online music stores with different DRM-concepts and players is not.
if the protesters rampaged its ok for the cops to fight them. a peaceful protest is ok, except there was a ban on protests (i'm not sure if protests need to be signed up and need court-approval in the US).
In germany the firefighters (usually two fireman walking around and taking care that everything is fine) have to attend theater performances in case of some emergency. I'm almost sure france as similar regulations. Cinemas are something different, but the personal can make emergency calls using conventional phones.
My cell phone doesn't even work in the local cinema. I don't get a signal. and why should I take my cell phone anyway to a movie theater?
The german public broadcasters were bashed for their large web-content by private content-providers. One of the large TV news mags made a joint venture with a large national ISP. announcing the URL several times a day.
I don't want to miss public broadcasting thats financed by a fee on TV and radio sets. Or even computers. Those TV stations fill a small niche for content thats omitted by the private TV stations. The public broadcasting stations usually don't need to care that much about TV quotes and market share. That makes some interesting programs possible.
However, the large TV stations ARD (Das Erste) and the ZDF usually produce a shitload of crappy series and shows. With a soft family touch. Shows that will never make it to other countries. That draws younger viewers away, because hit-TV-shows like CSI, 24, Sex and the City, Ally McBeal, King of Queens,... are all shown by the private stations that can afford to buy them (with a much lower budget). From time to time they do show a top-movie or even an old blockbuster. After 10:00pm. A few years ago, the ZDF canceled The Sopranos after two seasons due to low quotes. It has never been in german TV ever since. IIRC, it was shown rediculous late on sundays around 11:00pm.
The public contract requires them to produce a programme that suited for all types of age groups. The problem is, that its mainly watched by people of 40+ years of age. Those that are not that much into stuff coming over from the states.
Every once in a while the public broadcasting cries for more money and wants to raise the fees.
I don't want to sound like a troll, but I look at Gmail what it really is: a webmail provider. I can't imagine that one is so desparate in need of storage space to use Gmail for that. Even if a harddrive is almost filled up, 1000 MB should be still available. Just clean up. As a geek I can appreciate those hacks.
I usually go to see a movie and don't buy it on VHS or DVD. I'm going to the movies once per week (sneak preview) and if I want to see something interesting. On Tuesdays its cheaper here (germany) and I can get a student discount. I try to stay away from popcorn&drinks and I use public transporation.
I don't even own an standalone DVD player. I can play them, but I don't watch or rent them.
A DVD can't replace an evening in a movie theater. At home you are easily disturbed.
I would have never considerd a webmail account for daily use, but with Gmail its something different. I don't know why, but the recent pro/contra Gmail discussion appeared interesting and I wanted to give it a try.
Hotmail and most other webmail providers lack a "geek factor".
I made a longer vacation with some relatives and I have been without internet during this time. No problem. After I came back and realized that my PC stopped working (I keep it running) I had the most horrible weekend. No PC and no Internet and nothing to do.
I don't think 10-year olds should need to know much about IT in general. Its just not important for them. Basic schooling is enough. I'm not even sure what to teach them about IT? some Network-basics? How a browser/mail client/... works? Word processing? programming? Its all not important for them.
They will learn in automatically when they grow up or show an own personal interest in those things.
this is a toy-product for coffee-snobs.
I prefer fresh made latte and coffee.
I got a bunch of mails with a subject like this:
Jens.xxxxxxxx yadda yadda yadda
after looking at the mail headers, its fairly obvious that they tried to spam different combinations of firstname.lastname@gmail.com.

broken by design

I had no real clue about grammar in languages - until I heard about the formal definition of a

grammar in a college CS lecture.
To apply it properly is still something different

I'm a little peeved that xine doesn't play ogg streams properly. it stops playing after a song change or so. annoying.

The message that you sent was undeliverable to the following:

I wrote the following mail:
Subject: inappropriate public comment
"I understand his desire to search for intelligent
life in outer space, because obviously he doesn't
find it in the mirror in the morning,"
Do you really think such a public comment is
appropriate? Yes? Think again and resign.
Good job! Congratulations! I live in another
country, several thousand miles away and you
pissed me off and made me write this email.

is the spam on Gmail analyzed in some way?
feed to an RBL or so?
just the childrens books classics (the stuff thats bought by other parents - ask your bookseller or other parents). not necessarily geeky stuff.
if you want to help your kids education encourage them to read.
I remember having lots of science oriented books for kids during my childhood and my mom read to me several children books classics.
if they become geeks one day they will show the typical interest in geeky stuff sooner or later. don't force that.
is it safe to use windows at all?
either you trust what you have/use
