I'm probably just too much of an IRC addict to like the idea.

Come on, text-based chats are more than enough for easy real-time communication. If you want something fancy use a Webcam-chat or video-conferencing instead.
I know the eye movements get be tracked, but I think for a good interaction with a gui toolkit it needs to be really acurate to hit a button without hitting the other one right next to it.
Or selecting/high-lighting text. I think that can be tricky.
I really like the idea of alumni or other rich persons sponsoring universities or museums as long as they don't take too much influence on the issues being taught.
I would fear that a 'Gates Center for Computer Science' would mean a typical Microsoft-monoculture.
Using the latest development stuff by M$ and all that. Bad Thing.
I'm all for new techologies, but I don't trust electronic voting. I'm happy to live in a country where voting is done with a ballot made of paper and a pen to make a cross-mark.
You have a paper-record with valid or un-valid votes that are easy to count. No interpretation of punch-cards needed because the voting machine was too complicated or otherwise flawed.
I never heard about a9.com before I found the/. story. I tried it and it has a clean interface and the results are displayed in a non-bloated layout. Its good that someone tries to integrate Google and other Search engines into a single interface. It has been tried before, but this looks different. I think I'll continue to use it.
It would be interesting to see the browser stats of Google. A single site isn't relevant to determine the current browser trend, but Google is visited daily by most internet users I would say.
As a citizen of a country with several different parties I know that my vote will have a slight chance not to be lost (coalition of two or more parties to build a government).
I know the USA as a country with a classic two-party system. From my knowledge most politicians in the US need to seek a majority for their issues/acts. Even in their own party/fraction in the parliment.
In my country every elected politician has to support his party (In Germany known as 'Fraktionszwang') in major parliment decisions.
Why didn't you choose to join the Democrats or Republicans when you can more or less define your views/standpoints on your own without having to worry about a large pre-defined party programme with their views on issues? Just to have a larger chance to win?
instead of posting so much dupes the editors should
rethink their rejections of submitted stories.

if you throw items of holodeck equipment within the the holodeck it will hit the holodeck wall.

If there is central server it will be the next target to be shut down by the record industry.
