Are you suggesting communism is superior? Because that's worked out so well for the USSR, Cuba, etc.. Any pure unadulterated system is bound to eventually become corrupt, because without some elements of other systems to provide the checks and balances that a hybrid system provides, it tends to evolve to the extreme, at which point, human nature inevitably taints it with greed and the desire for power. This is true of mega-=corporation as well as overly powerful governments. In the history of the US, it seems every year the separate states have less say in matters and the federal government grows and grows (along with the mega corporations); the only exceptions I can think of are the recent marijuana laws.
The same is true of military spending, of which TCP/IP and the Internet itself are prime examples. The point is, exploration for the sake of just exploration doesn't really fire up common folks' interest all that much.
The reason NASA was so well funded before was because of the cold war and one-upmanship, not because Americans in the '60s were more science-minded.
Actually, that's not how I envisage the meaning of the term. I made it up for myself years ago to describe people who are essentially luddites, or otherwise stumped by and suspicious of technology, and always blame the system for their own clueless user mistakes. Like those who claim they must have a virus because they "mysteriously" have 17 folders called "New Folder" on their desktop.
I admit I don't get it.. what is the purpose of a bot that just randomly buys stuff?? How is that "art" ? Must be nice to have the money to burn, to just buy stuff randomly as an experiment. Even just $100 at a time adds up quickly.
GMD is pretty cool, it comes with some stock gestures, such as one to shut off the screen but you can make your own and set them to do anything from launch an application, to starting a search, to applying a setting. For example, I made one where I use 5 fingertips and rotate them slightly clockwise, it toggles auto-rotation. Very handy. But, it does require root. It's worth buying the pro version too. https://play.google.com/store/...
This entire thing has no connection whatsoever with "capitalism", this seems little more than a attempt to surreptitiously conflate it with what is plainly and clearly an extortion racket. The fact that the mention of capitalism is even in the summary speaks volumes about an agenda at play.
I could use the same lame argument against communism; the government could encrypt your files (which under communism they would actually own, since government technically owns everything) and then charge you to decrypt them, as those in power see fit. Political dissident? Files encrypted. Said something derogatory about (insert your own)Dear Leader in print or radio? File encrypted (or much worse). Gov't a little short on funds? Files encrypted, under the guise of "protecting " them for you.
And yes, I think my above argument as "communism" is rather lame, but certainly no more lame than this argument that extortion = capitalism.
There are plenty of font creation apps. Do a search. Instafont, for example You may have to root the thing though. Same applies for gestures, I use GMD gesture control, but again, you have to be rooted.
Well, in a word, one could argue: defense.
Unless the USSR and Europe should've just laid down and let the nazis steam roll right over them. And the US should've just written a mean, nasty letter to Hirohito for blowing up Pearl Harbor. But there'd be no war, right? Note: this doesn't invoke Godwin's law since the topic is actually war related.
I'm not saying all war is justified of course; but sometimes, just sometimes they are, such as the above example.
A legendary fiery orb that slowly moves across the sky in a roughly 8 to 14 hour period (depending on your latitude and season).. though for the past 7 weeks, being in the mid-Atlantic states, I haven't seen hide nor hair of the damn thing!
Did it ever occur to you guys that his title was just hyperbole? I doubt he seriously, literally meant they should be stoned to death, for real. Unless maybe he hails from Saudi Arabia or similar, in which case.. hmmm, you may have a point.
In any case, the much larger threat from these douches is their willingness to sell these services; someone could do some real damage. I hope they see some serious fines or jail time.
That gives a thug less responsibility regarding human life? I don't buy that. We all have that responsibility. Cops are given weapons because they have to insert themselves into dangerous situations in which they may be killed or wounded, whereas the average citizen is expected to get away (or try) from a dangerous situation if at all possible.
Cops aren't supermen, they're humans just like everyone else. They feel pain, fear, have families, etc..
It is their job to stop crime; it is not their job to take a bullet for someone, or unnecessarily risk their life. An estimated 125 cops have died in 2014. The fact that there are a few asshole cops (as there are a-holes in every walk of life) out there shouldn't change the big picture about what they can do.
None I've really found viable or as popular, unfortunately. Which is a shame, because I hate Facebook's godawful interface. They change it around often enough to probably dissuade people from setting better privacy controls, and getting to the right menu or setting you want is anything but clear or intuitive. It could be so much better. It'd also be nice if you had more control over who saw your comments to another's post, but nope. I even hate the fact that whenever I change my profile pic, it has to announce it on my wall. OMG who cares? Supposedly you can change who sees that, but again, it's murky waters.
I would venture to say most users here care very much.
But you're right, the average household tumblr/facebook/instagram/imgur/twitter teen or soccer mom won't really care, as long as they still get attention. I suspect the Internet, to a lot of people, is the easy road to their 15 minutes of fame.
I agree with you that sometimes excessive force is used, there's no denying that. Maybe it's the adrenaline; sometimes, it's just part of a power-trip of a dickhead cop. Sometimes it's from nerves and cautious experience, there are times when a suspect under apprehension will act submissive temporarily as a ruse.
I figure there are roughly three different reasons anyone joins a police force:
1) It just runs in the family. Same is true of firefighters, it often just becomes a family legacy, and feels like a duty to join.
2) Probably most rarely, you get a truly altruistic guy who wants to try to better society and get thugs off the street.
3) You get a loser (very often someone who was always in trouble with the law themselves when they were younger) who goes on a power trip and orgasms over authority they're given.. essentially a bully.
I've met all three types. Number 3s are scary, but not representative of all or even most cops. If they were, we'd hear of a lot more incidences than we do, since there are roughly 1.1 million police officers in the US.
Really? How exactly is this "obvious"? I just said, sometimes the problem is the officer, sometimes it's not. Reading comprehension, or did you just forget to go anonymous for your troll?
Quite the contrary. Why does the officer have greater responsibility? His life is every bit as important, if not more, than some thug's. Here's why society is breaking down. We ALL have responsibility to be civil to each other in a civilized society. Why do black thugs get a free pass? That's bullshit. A cops job is to protect society from bad people, not baby sit them.
Well, it's subjective i guess. I wouldn't care to own any of the new Star Trek films on DVD/BluRay. Sadly though (to me) the same applies to the Hobbit films. I bought the first one sometime after seeing the film in the theater, but after realizing I had no interest in watching it (again) I haven't bothered buying the DVD of the 2nd film. I did go see it in the theater, and I'll go see the 3rd for what it's worth, but.. I have no interest in buying the rest of the DVDs, even to see the special features. Seems like it would just be a bunch of green screen stuff. I just wanted to see a well-rendered dragon on the big screen.:)
Conversely, I'm happy to own the LotR discs, and watch reruns all the time.
You're obviously assuming "the problem" is always the officer. Confirmation bias. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I think the camera has a quelling effect on both cops and suspects.

That would make an awesome signature.

lol. At least you get to see the Aurora Borealis,..? We get nothing but light pollution.

I wanna be gruntled!
It's still speculation, and only circumstantial evidence.
I thought he was going to say, "Happy Birthday ... Saturn"
:-D ba dum tish
They should have performed more sacrifices!

But I'm stuck during the transitional phase ;)
