Bush Sr. didn't raise the taxes willingly, that would be the majority Democrat congress that pushed for taxes. Like they always do. They convince people that the country's economy and the national budget are the same thing. But go ahead, deflect away and act as though Bush raised taxes single-handedly. Funny how the Executive branch can't actually do that, but the legislature can.

I'm half-expecting a new blockbuster movie to come out soon featuring that observatory; the FBI were hired as part of the stunt to generate interest. Or maybe they're actors dressed as FBI. Either is probably unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility I suppose.

And even if they did actually manage to tax the tobacco and e-cig industries into the grave, there would be the sudden shortfall of a huge chunk of taxable income. History shows that no government ever takes that in stride very well, so I wouldn't be surprised if they suddenly applied a huge tax to something else they needed to deem evil, just to keep the cash flow going. The cycle begins.

Pretty much like most of slashdot's summaries then.
FWIW, my kid is 17, he says snapchat is the big thing at school, but he also goes over and hangs out with his friends almost every other night, so from what I see, it's not so much an either/or thing but a supplemental thing. Texting and social media are certainly easier and more rapid ways to communicate then having to travel across town to talk to someone in person.

  17. It's not quite the same, you have other options with a phone, like not installing Facebook on it.
But you have a point: my wife has noted that all too frequently she'll mention something in conversation in our living room, while perusing FaceBook on her phone, and within hours an ad or post of some sort will show on FB for that thing she just discussed, whether it's needing a new mattress (which we do), or luggage for vacation (which we did), or a celebrity we mentioned. It's gotten creepy. I'd say a couple of times is just coincidence and can be laughed off, but this has happened with alarming specificity and regularity.

It's a harsh and ugly environment, full of glare. They keep saying once they're all in on every floor, (and controlled by a centralized system), they can turn some off but it's been months now so I'm starting to question that, I think they've been done for weeks. We all hate it. Our monitors create their own light, the need for copious overhead lighting became obsolete when people stopped doing everything with paper and filing cabinets decades ago.
