    ...kids, is that many parents don't put their kids to sleep the same way they did when I was a child (70's/80's.)

    My kids go to sleep between 7:30PM and 8:30PM depending upon their ages (ranging from 5-9.)

    At 9PM at night during the week I'll hear quite a lot of our neighbors' kids still playing outside, much less getting ready for bed.

    School starts VERY early here as well (kids have to be at school by 7:30AM.)

    Now, some of these kids who are staying up later are doing quite well in school, so who knows. It's just different from when I was a kid and it seemed to be a pervasive adult conspiracy to put all children to bed early...

    ...on things other than salary.

    Depending on the market you are in, I would very much expect your non-labor expenses in Sales and Marketing to vastly outweigh your engineering non-labor costs.

    If I work at a company with 1 marketing guy/gal and 10 engineers, and I spend 1 dollar on marketing non-labor expenses and $0 on engineering non-labor expenses I would be spending an infinite amount of money more on non-marketing expenses but I'd still be clearly focused on engineering.

    It would be nice if a low level audio system WAS part of HTML5 though.

    I had one of the first O2s in Silicon Valley and the thing was crap, always was. You might be remembering the Octane. But as for OpenGL being crap in the 90's - that's crazy talk.

    I remember a 24 proc 6 pipe IR2 at NASA's Ames Research Center that was UNGODLY AWESOME... Hell, I had a base model IR2 in my office in 1996 just before they were being released and I slept in my office more often that summer just to be near it.

    Too bad Irix is the worst operating system in history (I never used Windows ME but I can't imagine something crashing more than Irix...)

    Well, we're (me included) overlooking Gmail, but that really is about it (Gmail is a commodity anyhow.)

    It really doesn't seem like much return on the billions and billions spent on operating costs PER QUARTER does it?

    "Google can't be trusted not to pull the plug on a service which people have come to rely on" - They've just now realized this? LOL.

    Most people on /. have known this for years.

    Google knows what it's doing when it comes to search (including maps), and (after several years) Android - everything else is stuff built/rolled out/supported by disparate uncoordinated groups with no coherent strategy or purpose beyond "hey, this looks like something the PR guys would like."

    ...If WebGL becomes part of the HTML5 standard AND a low level audio (buffer/bytes level) API is included YOU WILL SEE A REVOLUTION.

    People and platforms will be forced to support WebGL and WebAudio (for example) because they'll simply be left in the behind. Tight audio control is crucial WebGL and low level audio? AWESOME combination.

    Not really, all public companies are the devil - they are legally required to be as soon as they have public shareholders.

    Operating Systems are just tools in the toolbox. I could give a sh** which one someone else uses; ergo, I doubt anyone gives a sh** about which ones I use (especially since I use pretty much all of them.)

    I must admit though, IRIX has always been one giant stinking pile o' crap.

    Natalie Portman is pretty hot, although, I'm more of a Xena Warrior Princess liking type. I like women who are not likely to break during sex.

    Opera Mini itself is not a hack, Opera Mini on iOS is a hack.

    Does anybody seriously believe that Opera wouldn't create a native application full blown 'non mini' browser for iOS if crApple weren't such jerks about their walled garden?

    ...his ACTUAL goal is to have software patents abolished entirely - while simultaneously protecting his company from others who patent things out of greed and avarice.

    This explains why he continually patents the most ridiculously obvious things - it's an effort to eventually (so he hopes) get the non-technical world to realize how absolutely f***ing stupid the software patent system is. Sadly, he appears to think that his efforts need to be even more obvious; ergo, the latest patent.

    I'm telling you - GENIUS...

    BTW - On a serious note, I'd be embarrassed as an engineer to have my name as 'inventor' on a patent so blatantly f***ing stupid.

    Apparently you missed the irony of replying on topic, but absurdly, to a clearly absurd comment.

    First, it's not crap - although it's not for me.

    Second, I'm not defending Micro$oft in any way, I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of people trying to always make Micro$oft sound evil despite virtually every other company (Google/Apple/Et cetera) doing the same things.

    I agree, and to be honest I don't think it is likely but it could happen.

    Speaking only for the US here, if the fiber infrastructure was prevalent enough and bandwidth costs low enough I would think that large corporate environments would do just that - virtualized workstations for everyone, the ultimate in floating profiles.

    That being said, it's a little 'utopian' in a way. ;)

    If it indeed runs too hot to hold in hand, then no, there is no hyperbole.

    I haven't seen a review that says anything bad about heat, I've read and heard that if you lay it down on a blanket it can get hot.

    Hell, I have a Macbook Air that gets lava hot if you do any OpenGL work on it.

    BTW, the hyperbole was in reference to the "declaring war" sentiment.
