Well, thats the whole idea. I don't develop any commonly used software, and I don't want learn how it works. It is not my job, nor is it something I want to focus on. That is how work gets done. People can make decent looking websites faster, when they don't have to actively maintain the web server. I don't have an important website or anything, and if my computer cant easily provide the ability for me to host it, then I wont. I have some content, and it is not mission critical to have it on the web, and I don't need any special options, but it is a convenience. The idea behind getting software, is that it will do something for you, without requiring you to know how it works.

Upgrades to Mac OS X are free. Unless you call a trip to the Apple store an expense. But the minor releases (10.1.x, 10.0.x, etc) are free and downloadable. Although you will not like using Mac OS X much if you don't have the 10.1 upgrade :)

Although I have limited experience with Windows XP, I know for a fact that with OSX, it is surprisingly easier even to write a letter or put a picture on the internet. Although its not exactly feature rich, Text Edit is very good looking, and is easy to use. Printing out that letter is also easy. Plug in a printer, and print center will recognize it and let you print. As far as putting pictures on the internet, Apple provides good integration with its iTools, which will let you place your pictures on your own website in only a few minutes. Of course its not as capable as having it on your own computer, but I doubt the average user wants to have to work with Apache (although it does come with OSX) and it already looks nice. I am sure this may seem too Macish to some slashdot users, but for the guy who just wants to put some pictures on the internet, what more could yo ask for (ok, there are some things, but work with me here)

I used 98 for a few years. It wasn't that it had problems running, and wouldn't crash every few hours at first, but the system will become unstable upon installing software which shouldn't be able to do so. I am a Mac user, where this kind of thing is easily remedied because you only need to remove extensions that the program added ot the system if you want to undue any damage it has done. This fixed all stability problems in all pre-OSX OSs I have used. But with windows 98, I had to reinstall the OS when I had a problem. This kind of problem is no longer present in my OSX usage. The system remains stable regardless of the programs I install, and I just don't run programs that crash.

I am glad that you would share your opinions, although it does sound more as if you are a Linux zealot :) Anyhow, the point is, some people like OS X and some people like other OSs, either way we need to have something to combat MS, and it can be done best with the combined support form people who use all operating systems.

Just to address the 'slow' issues, Linux is a nice and fast OS, and yes, I have used Linux. But I am unaware of where this whole 'slow' idea is coming from. OS X runs well on my G4 400 AGP 320MB system, which isn't exactly the newest system. Aqua does need some fixes, but the only thing I see that needs serious work is window resizing.

I will give you this last link which will show you another OS that is fast. But please don't think I am comparing Linux and System 6, ok?

    http://home.wanadoo.nl/ruud.dingemans/html/syste m6 .html

System 6 ran very fast on even the slowest computers. But it was replaced by system 7.

  10. Slashdotters Unite!!! on Apple OS X, BSD and Jordan Hubbard · · Score: 1, Insightful

It has come to my attention that we are wasting our time dealing with these subjects. There are Mac zealots, like me, who believe that OS X is the best OS out there. Then there are those people who believe that OS X isn't so great. However, I believe that most Slashdot readers would agree with me that Apple is doing a better job in their products and business practices than Microsoft. So even if you would rather have Linux or some other OS take the crown which windows has held for some time now, it would be to your benefit if Apple had a better standing against Microsoft.

I hope that I have disagreed with myself enough that I wont have to further explain my opinion to those who flame me :)

If 32 bits is in the GameBoy advance (http://www.gameboyadvance.com/system/index.html), why would it be good enough for a computer?

If 64 bits is in the Nintendo 64, why would even THAT be good enough for a new processor?

If 128 bits is in the Dreamcast, why would you buy a computer with less bits?

This is where I am happy to be one of the few people who can say, that their computer has more bits than the Itanium processor. Sure my computer is a few years old, but is still going fast at 400Mhz. That's the beauty of the G4. They are still fast, even when they are 2 years old and only 1/4 the speed of the fastest top of the line G4. If you don't believe me, check this out: http://www.apple.com/g4
