Being a debugger is not that hard. Just look for the obvious mistakes like not closing off objects when the program is done with them, and then freeing up the memory. Look for misspellings of variable names, follow a naming convention, write a comment in the code when you discover what that part of the code does so it is easier to maintain later, write documentation, think like a user to see what mistakes a user could make that could crash the program or cause errors and then trap for errors and fix the code so it does not crash. Source control is easy to understand and use if you know how to program, you can easily learn the commands to check source code in an out.
was learn as many programming languages as possible until one of them led to a job.
It happened to be Visual BASIC, but I learned COBOL, Ada, FORTRAN, 8086 Assembly, JCL/JECL, Turbo Pascal, GW-BASIC, Quick BASIC, Visual BASIC, C language, and a few others.
Back in the good old days of a Computer Science degree we used to be able to create our own operating system. But modern times they don't get that complex. You are most likely lucky enough to learn data structures and how to call an OS API call.
What I would suggest, is that you visit http://www.uglist.org/ or do a Google search for "YourCity YourState User Groups" and replace YourCity with the City you live in and YourState with the State you live in. Join up a few user groups and they will be free to join and you can learn the "complex" things by going to meetings and listening to lectures and networking with other Comp Sci Students and programmers and maybe a few managers that might help you get leads to jobs.
Ask for an entry level job that provides on the job training. You will most likely get a "Mentor" or a more experienced programmer teach you some complex tricks of the trade. I myself have had a few mentors in my life, and it is a good thing to have. I've also developed my own style of programming and debugging and documentations that I could write a book on and sell it to final year Comp Sci students.:)
Some of us do, aka Thank God for Evolution. I don't know why people cannot accept that God and Evolution do not really cancel each other out.
Christian Fundamentalists cancel out Evolution with Creationism and God.
Atheist Fundamentalists cancel out God by saying Evolution proves God does not exist or it is ridiculous that God could exist.
When religions were categoried by Vatican II each religion was labeled as a "1" as in believes in a Supreme Being, and "0" as believes in void or nullness. Buddhism and Atheism are a "0" and Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism are a "1".
You can argue how can you have "0" without a "1", and also how can you have a "1" without a "0"? It is Binary in a way. Matter has more space or "void" in it than it has matter (subatomic particles) to answer that question.
You do know that before universities existed, they did science in monasteries by Monks and Scholars?
Better to leave it to the Universities for science, and leave it to the Churches for the religion. Just like in Ghostbusters, don't cross the streams of science and religion.:)
Agreed we Catholics are persecuted by Christian Fundamentalists, and then some call us Catholics as Christian Fundamentalists when we really aren't because we aren't Protestant or Fundamentalists.
If homosexuals want to get married, and women want to have abortions, it is none of my business and I don't care. It is between them and God, and not my job to judge them or stop them. The same with the teaching of Evolution I don't care that it is taught and I am not going to stop it from being taught.
I feel the same way about Creationism and Intelligent Design, I don't care that they are taught either and I am not going to stop them from being taught.
I am not going to support anything, and let people choose own their own what they want to learn and believe.
Evolution does not disprove God or that the existence of God is ridiculous. Please don't abuse Science to be used to attack religions and abuse religions to attack science. Both sides are doing exactly the same thing and I hope they would just stop and let each other teach and learn whatever they want to teach and learn.
No no no, it wasn't that God did it, but God led them to the New Earth by using Kara and reincarnating her and bringing her back to life after each time she died.
God created the 12 colonies, the 13th colony was Cylons, but they killed themselves 2000 years ago as their on creations turned on them. Just like the Cylons on Caprica turned on the humans there.
What BSG showed was that while God was not all powerful and could not stop the genocide, he was able to lead a part of the Cylons to be good and lead Caprica Six and Baltar with "Angels" that only they could see, and sent Kara to lead them all to Earth.
That when Humans or Cylons tried to play God and create new life, that life turned on them just as Humans and Cylons turned on God in the first place.
After they reached "New Earth" which I guess was our Earth 150,000 years ago, their lives were less eventful and they mated with the natives on New Earth to create what we have now.
This ends racism, as it creates one race, the Human race, the best of Humans and Cylons merged into one, and speaks out against violence and trying to play God and creating new life, which might turn on us and try to kill us all.
That everything has happened before and will happen again, unless we are careful.
It is a story on morality, really. We shouldn't abuse technology and create Cylons.
Caprica is going to show how they first created the Cylons. It is going to be a Frankenstein type story where a scientist's daughter died in a terrorist suicide bombing attack but he had backed up her mind on computer and created the first Cylon in an attempt to play God and bring his daughter back to life. But his partner wants nothing to do with it and leaves. But then a greedy corporation steals the technology to create Cylons as servants for the Twelve colonies.
without Macs that cost $500 more than the typical Vista Business PC, what would Microsoft copy after?
Maybe Steve Ballmer needs to hire some more developers developers developers and throw a few more chairs to finally figure out why people actually want to pay that extra $500 to get a Mac OSX based Macintosh instead of a Windows Vista PC?
Hiring a team of unemployed US Citizen web designers to make the recovery.gov web site more transparent.
Seriously, the US government needs to spend recovery money only on things that create jobs. Everything else is a pork project even if it is called special project or something else like an earmark or bailout.
If you are going to follow FDR's New Deal, may I remind you that there was a Public Work Project that hired US citizens to do things like repair roads, build parks and buildings, you know things to do that not only help the nation rebuild our broken infrastructure but also create jobs so that unemployed people can be hired and paid paychecks to spend and stimulate the economy.
If recovery money spent does not create jobs, then it might as well be sucked into a black hole. If you thought Bush was bad, what will you think of Obama when the unemployment rate hits 10%, 15%, 20%, and only the big corporations are being bailed out and they are not hiring anyone but downsizing. To be honest Congress and the Senate have a lot to do with this, as well as legacy leftovers from the Bush administration and the US citizens as well are to blame.
Unless recovery.gov was not meant to be transparent so we cannot see where the money is going, and it is going to big companies that lobbied the federal government for it. What about the small business bailouts and recovery checks for the US citizens losing their homes, cars, and jobs?
we expect to face if we consider a career writing Sci Fi stories for TV Shows and Movies?
Be the next Harlan Ellison, write an unfilmable script for a Sci Fi series.
Work with the producers and director to rewrite most of the script and demand credits as the original writer.
Let it boil for 40 years and become a grumpy old man about it when some young punk writes a book based on the TV show that was based on your original script of which 90% of it was rewritten. Demand to be paid royalties for your ideas, ignore that you signed a contract 40 years ago and were not saying anything for 40 years about not getting paid enough until some young punk wrote a book on your ideas.
"Mine mine mine, I want my money hammerheads! I'll sue you, sue you, sue my writer's guild too, sue sue sue! You will rue the day you fucked with Harlan Ellison, assholes! I'll get my money one way or another. I'm going to bare my Adamtium-Fangs over this."
"Wait, what is this? A letter from Marvel Comics?"
"Dear, Harlan Ellison, please cease and desist from using the word Adamtium in your threats to the 'Star Trek' and Writer's Guild groups. Marvel Comics owns the right to Adamtium, and our new movie 'Wolverine: Origins' is marketing that phrase 'Adamtium' for the new movie."
"No no no, dammit dammit dammit, why did they have to remove the Pirate Ship, that was the best scene in the show, it was a shocker that the United Federation of Planets was replaced with a band of Pirates! Imbeciles! I'll sue, I'm no Richard Donner, you can't just edit or rewrite my script and then make a ton of money on it and then just think that I'll go away. I am going to use computer special effects to change 'The City on the Edge of Forever' to my original version and then let the fans decide!"
Then Harlan Ellison original version bombs and ends up on Youtube and gets a total of three hits, with fans claiming that he ruined the whole 'Star Trek' experience.
It would be better to write an entire movie on Harlan Ellison, just to show how messed up things are in Hollywood and the Writer's Guild and how Writers act and behave when their ideas get rewritten and recycled.
Ironic that the most popular show they host is the WWE based ECW show. They got rid of the Zombie and Vampire characters so they moved The Boogie Man to it, and when that wasn't enough they brought in special guest Kane to beat the Boogie Man.
The SciFi network was great, until NBC bought them out. Mad Magazine called NBC as Needs Bill Cosby, as Bill Cosby used to carry the whole network to prevent them from bankruptcy. Almost every other show is crap on NBC.
If SciFi didn't keep showing Classic Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Dr. Who, Star Trek Enterprise, and other Sci Fi re-runs they would be bankrupt as well.
Much as I love comic books and Stan Lee, the "Who wants to be a Superhero" was a fake reality TV show. Then the Winner was promised his own movie, which got turned into a guest spot on some "Giant Snake" movie and they edited him in at the last moment and he was not the star, but some superhero at a carnival and his powers had no effect on the giant snake. The real star of the show had to be swallowed by the snake and do something inside of the snake to destroy it.
While liberals are being selected against, you have ignored the college indoctrination of students into liberals. Being a liberal is not a genetic trait, it is an ideological trait. One that can be taught. One that is taught to a majority of the students in the USA.
Birth Control and Abortion became popular in the 1960's by the Hippie movement. The Hippies merged with the Liberals since then.
I think the "Darwin Awards" prove that people often kill themselves or die before passing on their DNA. Since Liberals are more likely to use illicit drugs, they are more likely to die of cancer or other diseases related to illicit drug use, and also more likely to commit suicide as they support euthanasia as well.
God will not get the credit, the stupidity of the liberals will get the credit as they doom themselves to a short life by supporting such things that shorten their life, allow them to die sooner, or prevent them from passing on their DNA to future generations. These are of course, secular reasons, not religious reasons, why those things should be opposed and made illegal. But since college indoctrinates a majority of liberals, those things will never be made illegal as liberals support them.
I went to the University of Missouri in the mid 1980's and it was true then, as it is now, that only the liberal point of view is taught and indoctrinated to the students. My Sister-In-Law had the same indoctrination recently, but then later she passed away of a heart attack.
This was the case in the law firm I worked at. They had a 90% turn around in four years of IT staff mostly programmers. I stuck it out, until I got so sick I could no longer work and went on short-term disability and soon after got fired for being sick.
I saved the law firm millions of dollars in lost productivity by automating forms to electronic forms and developing and coding a docket calendar because lawyers would miss court dates and Palm Pilots and Outlook didn't work well enough when the court dates would get moved or a lawyer would go on vacation or leave the firm, and nobody knew what court dates he/she had to attend to and cover. Everything automated into a Web 2.0 application that could reassign court dates and court info to other lawyers when the original lawyer left the firm or went on vacation. Before that they would lose clients and lose million dollar cases and where bleeding money really bad.
For me, I bring my own soap and shampoo and washcloth and clean myself up in the bathroom when working those 48/72 hours. Plus deodorant and a spare change of clothes. It does not take any more than 15 minutes to do so, more if you brush your teeth and mouthwash. I had such items in my desk drawer for just such cases to be prepared for anything.
Nothing like cleaning up a big mess of a genius programmer that management loves, but does not love programming janitors like me or you that take on extra work to make sure it passes QA Testing, which should have been the job of the genius programmer in the first place. But he went to "Happy Hour" with the managers to suck up and schmooze his way into a promotion and pay raise.
Agreed, this happened to me a few places that I worked at. Not only did I have to do my work, but the work of three other coders to fix their messes. The extra stress made me sick and I developed schizoaffective disorder and got too sick to work. Therefore; I have been out of work since 2002 due to disabilities like high blood pressure (I had a few mini-strokes) that damaged my stomach and colon and put me on short-term disability. When I returned all of my doctors' notes got lost and I was put on probation, and then two weeks later fired because I got so sick I threw up into a trashcan and it bothered my coworkers to hear me throw up. So I was fired on the spot.
except I was the one that debugged their "sloppy" and "crappy" code that while brilliant, had crashed the PCs and servers 12 times a day.
Eventually the extra stress of working on spaghetti code with no comments or documentation or flowcharts gave me a lot of stress and I got sick on the job, and then eventually fired for being sick.
Now I don't have a job since 2002 and the Brilliant but sloppy and crappy coders still have their jobs and promotions and pay raises.
Why does management like them? Because it takes one to know one, jerks like or love other jerks. In order to break into management, one has to become a jerk to their coworkers and underlings, or else they cannot manipulate them into doing work. Then when they offload the hard work to their coworkers, they are considered to be delegating work. All I got was insane puzzles to figure out from coworkers who were considered brilliant, but didn't know how to do quality control, secure programming, or even standard programming. Just sloppy code, crappy code, that was one big mess that coworkers like me had to clean up after.
That sounds like my online profile, minus the emo poetry. Just depressed statements, trollings, suicide notes, fake suicides, and not being able to enjoy myself because I get angry responses to my Slashdot, etc postings.
Outsourcing is used because it saves money on labor, managers don't care that it is less successful. Pennywise and poundfoolish. Since almost everyone does it, companies that don't outsource take heavy hits on expenses and soon fire their native employees and outsource.
Women have babies because it is a maternal instinct. It is a part of their nature, but not for all women. Some women use birth control and abortion to avoid having babies so they can have a career. Most women want children, so they can look after her after she grows old and have a legacy (or legashe based on the Simpsons) to pass on her genetics to the next generation. If most women did not want to have babies, we wouldn't have had the baby boom and population growths, we'd have population shrinkage instead. Even if a woman and a man don't know how to care for a baby, they learn from their mistakes. Each baby they have they learn more, and become a better parent, or so that theory goes.
Since most liberal women are for birth control and abortion, that makes more moderates and conservatives being raised than liberals. Which is why high schools and colleges have to have the liberal or left-wing conditioning for students and quash any other political views to make sure that there are more liberals (by making the children rebel from their parents' political views) by the time they are able to vote and get on the Internet and spread the liberal politics. Which is why you have a liberal or left-wing slant on most web sites and forums and blogs, etc.
"I left my basement last century, you insensitive youngling cod."
So did I, you insensitive basement leaving last century oldling clod! But I still can join up as a student to any college and get a student ID to apply for a discount. I was in my 30s when I last got my student discount from Microsoft, as it is never too late to go back to college. Some vendors don't ask for age, as it is age discrimination and can even cut you last century basement leaving oldlings a student discount.
Thank you Captain Obvious, did you happen to notice that Pricewatch has Windows XP Pro listed for $88? If you didn't, then you obviously did not click the link.
I was going to write use Windows XP Pro, but felt that the person who asked already knew that XP Home is not allowed under a virtual machine. Besides even if he did run XP Home under a virtual machine who is going to know?
Yes for good sakes he could just run Linux, but how about IE? He needs to run XP Pro under XEN or some other open source virtual machine.
What you forgot to mention, and so did I, was that Internet Explorer can be made to run under WINE under Linux. An easy way to do it is to use the IEs4Linux install scripts. Under the same Office 2003 or whatever the college offers as well.
But please note that the posted said he uses Windows, but does not want to allow pop-ups and opening up his firewall under Windows, and wanted a virtual machine solution under Windowsnot Linux, but thank you for your option to use Linux instead. It lead to this post, which has more useful information in it.
P.S. pay no attention to Anonymous Cowards, most of the AC posts are trolls.
I was a federal contractor. I had to migrate data from databases. I had to download via ftp and then later the web. I had to keep the web browser open in order to start the download again after the download would cancel. It was large files being downloaded with troop and aviation data from one base to the other, in flat text CSV files.
I had to import them into Oracle, MS-Access, SQL Server, and other databases.
The federal employees did not like us because we were the evil capitalists (ironically they earned more money and had better benefits than us contractors) and they were just doing their duty to the country and not for the money.
Who says federal contractors are not doing it for their country as well? I applied for federal jobs and scored 96% on the test they gave me, and I didn't get any federal jobs so I applied as a contractor instead.
The Generals loved me, I was one of their secret weapons that most of the Federal Employees couldn't or wouldn't do I was ordered to do. Plus I wrote a program that kept track of projects and emailed the chain of command for each 5 days it was late and if over 30 days late it emailed the general of the base. At the time Clinton was President and wanted to close down bases and migrate them all to one base or another. I was helping close down the St. Louis base to the Huntsville base. I migrated all databases down to the Huntsville base before moving on. Had I moved to Huntsville I might still have had a job there.
It was good, except for a few federal employees who knew I was a nerd and could do things they didn't understand how to do. Plus I wrote a butt-kicking project manager database that told on them, which may have been a factor.
Being a debugger is not that hard. Just look for the obvious mistakes like not closing off objects when the program is done with them, and then freeing up the memory. Does VIA still make X86 CPUs? Is VIA still in business?
Anyone remember when NEC made the V20 CPU that was an 8088 Clone but at double the clock speed?
Nah bring back the 68000 series and chunk it up to 64-bit ops. Forget the C=64 days, let's create the Super Amiga with the 6806400 Processor!
Looks like we either choose ARM or PowerPC to replace X86 technology and run X86 programs via emulation.

But please note that the posted said he uses Windows, but does not want to allow pop-ups and opening up his firewall under Windows, and wanted a virtual machine solution under Windows not Linux, but thank you for your option to use Linux instead.
