I hope I'm incorrectly calculating that a full 4.7GB write would take 3.6 hours.
I'm not sure, but I think they may be using a different x. When you say your CD-ROM drive is 24x, the x means 115 kB/s or something to that effect. When you talk about a 2x DVD drive, the x has a different (bigger) meaning. I think. Anybody know details?
60Hz vertical refresh[...]when the CRT is used at 85Hz (which I do think is far better than the CRT at 60 or 70HZ).
Hertz, shmertz. When will you people learn about the Hz myth? (the lesser-known child of the MHz myth). Maybe AMD should come up with 70 Hz displays and market them as Display XP 85+
The word "micron" is merely an abreviation of "micrometer," which *is* an accepted SI unit. But I agree; the reason why there are submultiples in the first place is to avoid the 0.00... at the beginning. But until someone comes up with a marketable abreviation ("nanon"?) for nanometer, we're stuck with it.
Oh, good thing it's the video encryption stuff. When I read the headline I thought it would be insecure to get an IP address with DHCP, and that had me worried.
Just get one with integrated GPS (if you REALLY need it, which as other users point out you may not) and get yourself a free CueCat from RadioShack (or order it free, and free s/h, from IBM). It's too slow to practically scan barcodes very often, but for a computer here and one there, it shouldn't matter too much if it takes a couple of seconds to scan it. I suppose most handhelds with GPS would have a USB port for it. You can either decode the *ahem* encryption *chuckle* or cut out a pin in one of its chips to have it output the unencrypted barcode. Not too much trouble if it's meant to be a one-device-only setup.
Damn. I knew computer AI was not advanced enough to simulate real intelligence, but I thought by now computers would be smart enough to pass a hacking test, since the pseudo-intelligence required to perform as well as scrip-kiddies is so low. But some Israeli firm even claimed to have a computer which was as smart as a 2 year old. I guess give that child/computer 10 years and we'll be there.
If I'm going to spend my hard-earned money making sure I get no spam, you can bet your ass it's not going to be by having the messages deleted as they arrive. That still leaves my ISP paying for bandwidth, and lowers the total available world bandwidth (even if by a small percentage). It's going to be by suing spammers out of business, making campaign contributions to someone who will outlaw it, or something to that effect.
The only way to actually get more done in a shorter period of time would be to increase the brain's response time.
No. Response time!=response speed. When the response time increases, it takes you longer to respond. Just like you win a race by having the shortest time, whereas you then have the highest (average) speed.
equivalent to hundreds of nuclear bombs. [...]may hinder the US's attempt to enter the Guiness Book of World Records for 'largest bombardment of the Middle East'
Oh, just give them time. I'm pretty sure they can drop hundreds of nukes if they want to.
Actually, I read somewhere (can't remember where; it may have been Asimov; can't guarantee its legitimacy) that the dust tossed into the air reflected sunlight enough to where London people could read the newspaper at night, from the scattered light. Anyobody remember something similar?
And they didn;t even mark you as funny, or informative..bad modderators..bad!
Maybe it's just me, but it feels like lately there's less moderation. Like I read stories and there's a lot less moderated comments, and when I metamoderate I'm starting to get less than 10 comments to metamod. Oh well.
Ah, people these days don't have a clue about mithology. LAN devices use network adapters. PAN devices use a wind instrument to communicate with each other, and they also have horns and goat legs.
the already employ "perfectly dark room(s)" (called Dark Rooms, funnily enough).
I know. There is one right at the other side of the wall in front of me, and I've used it before. My point is, someone who doesn't have one may not want to just lock himself in a broom closet and change rolls in the dark to save a couple of bucks. And I believe I still have a taken-apart disposable camera too (or did I throw it away already?) which I got years ago by my parents using one, taking it to get it developed, and asking if they could have it back for their kid. They would have thrown it away anyhow. Oh well.
They're building an army of clones. You hadn't heard?

Are they getting spam through their GPS-enabled gadgets?

Are you an engineer too?
No, I'm a moron. Common mistake.
-some Dilbert comic strip on similar devices

Like that
Yes, they're wrong. Should be Saddam and Gonorrhea. But neither has been destroyed yet.

I'm running apache and ftp right now, and average traffic is about 20 hits per day.
And of course, the easiest way to change that is by telling people about it in Slashdot. Smart move. Good thing you didn't post the URL.
There's a very easy method for remembering everything. You just...uhhh...ehhh...damn, I forgot again.
The troll's have had FB support for some time now
No, what the trolls have had for a while is FP support.
Except the pre-game shows have people that are not beefy but can use a computer.
what else would make you code for 48 hours straight?
Dunno. The thought of getting hot babes who like over-caffeinated C++-coding geeks?

...as long as you do it in a perfectly dark room. IIRC there is no rewind mechanism, so all the film is out of the roll.
