Nice. Then let people pay to get hidden from general public.

  6. Re:And this is new? on Phone or Tracking Device? · · Score: 1

Cell phones are RF devices. They broadcast. They say "I am here!" and the nearest cell tower says "Cool. I'll patch you in here until you reach the next cell." The phone company could track you to within the radius of a given cell since day one. As the technology has matured they've been able to better locate individual phones. It's a side effect of providing better coverage and more efficient service.

If you're worried about people tracking you by your cell phone, turn it off - and be aware that as soon as you come on the air to make a call, "they" will have a good idea where you are.

Yes. This is what I am talking about. I believe most of slashdotters are technical persons. We should understand it better than taxi drivers or accountants.

  7. We know it and we agree on Phone or Tracking Device? · · Score: 1

Yes, they work 99.9% of time. But sometimes useful messages are marked as spam. For example, all messages from my uncle are marked as SPAM because he uses older MUA. I know I can tune my Spamassassin this time but this is hack not solution.

Another nice example was Kaspersky Antivirus for Linux. It detected "virus" in attached .tar.bz2 containing 1M of zeroes...

IMO, spam protection and antivirus systems are much worse than spam and virii themselves.

Nothing new for me. We have "local leader" here in Latvia. This is our telco monopoly Lattelecom. They do the same thing. Telephone rates increase every year but clients get nothing new since 1993. Mobile phone is now cheaper to use than "traditional" one. Lattelecom looses its customers now. I hope the same will happen with M$ soon.

  12. Latvians viewpoint & EU on Estonia: Where the Internet is a Human Right · · Score: 2, Informative

Nice to meet my northern neighbours here at slashdot.

I am from Latvia. I have seen many such articles about my contry. We're behind Estonia in some areas, but not too far. I know what it's like to live in Latvia. And I know it's like to live in Estonia or Lithuania. No big difference. Therefore, all articles like this one are bullshit.

Where such articles come from? Some of our politicians want our countries to join European Union in the near future. This is why they try to present Estonia or Latvia as progressive countries with fast-growing economy and so on.

We're in doubt whether or not EU will be useful for us. EU will bring cheap workers from Asia to Latvia and Estonia. Even cheaper than we are. And no profits. At least seven years.

every foreigner i've met has told me that the women in Estonia are the most beautiful in the world :)

True. My first girl was from Estonia :) She was nice.

No, but my good friend has. I trust her. BTW, she is lawyer :)

Although "Grotter" isn't russian name, it doesn't sound uncommon for us because many of us have hebrew, german or latvian relatives.

  14. More Russian parodies on Tanya Grotter and the Magic Double Bass · · Score: 2, Interesting

Tanya Grotter is just a parody.

Another nice example of parody is russian "translation" of "Two Towers" movie made by Goblin. In fact, it is mostly new text, which looks like typical russian criminal story. All characters became criminals or soldiers from Russia and nearby countries. Original soundtrack is partially replaced by popular russian and other (Rammstein, Deep Purple etc.) songs.

We (Russians) find it really funny. Virtually everybody likes this "translation", although few of us have seen original "two towers".

Now there are only 2 mainframes at LDZ (Latvian Railway) but they don't have personnel shortage. In fact, nobody has personnel shortage in Latvia :(

The only "mainframe" I have access to is Hercules on my Athlon XP. Hercules runs MVS 3.8j and Linux S/390 ok, but it's impossible to get any documentation or manuals for MVS, OS/390 etc.

  17. Google in Latvia on Dissecting Localized Google Censorship · · Score: 2, Informative

I haven't noticed any censorship on google yet, but their "customer care" is really annoying and stupid for users from Latvia (http://www.lv/).

Major problem. They redirect any request from latvian subnets to google.lv which in fact is located somewhere outside latvia. The problem here is that almost any Internet user in Latvia use proxy to access foreign hosts. For efficiency, we set our browsers to bypass proxy for *.lv URL's. Obviously, google.lv cannot be reached directly. So we have to turn *.lv exclusion off, visit google.lv for the first time, select "google in english" for google.com, select russian or latvian language, turn exclusion on.

Minor problem. Default language on google.lv is latvian. Problem is that latvian is not the only language in Latvia. Half of us (incl. me) are russians. Some of us even don't understand latvian language. They should guess default language from browser settings.

I've reported these problems to google's support. After four days they replied something like "RTFM".

  19. Reaction to Linux on The State of GNU/Linux in 2002: It was Good. · · Score: 1

The most important achievement for Linux in 2002 was improved people's reaction to it. At least here in Latvia.

I use linux at home and at work for 3 years. When I stared work in my company in march 2001 managers choose Linux for servers mostly because Linux is free. Everybody except me refused to use linux as desktop OS because it was "too primitive and complex at the same time".

Now there are only two reasons why my manager doesn't want to erase his XP -- lack of Microsoft Office and 1C Accounting package.

Many people around me try Linux on their desktop computers and some of them like it. They come to me to ask an advice if something goes wrong. Now we maintain special document entitled "Linux Mandrake Installation Tips": http://159.148.190.67/~dimss/mdk-install-9.0.pdf (in Russian) for those interested in Linux.

In this case, only one computer and one keyboard know that key. Nobody can intercept your keystrokes or type on your computer.
