Linux is *not* ready for the average user desktop. The average user wants to do everything grandma wants to do, but they also want to be able to install or upgrade software and hardware *easily*. In addition, they want a fully functional GUI, with no *necessity* of dropping to a CLI for everyday tasks.
MS provides good software for them, and Linux is nice choice for the rest. I don't want Linux to become GUI- and *.inf-centric. Today's Linux has optimal (for me) split between CLI and GUI.
There is no technical problem with hardware support in Linux. Some manufacturers are not Linux-friendly (guess why). If something doesn't work with Linux, just don't buy it.
All password protection that Microsoft use in their products is an eternal source of inconvenience. There was at least three cases in last five years when we had to use (il)legal cracking tools to recover _our own_ data in MS Access and MS Words when employee forgot password.
The simplest antivirus filter: drop any message that contains 'MS-DOS executabe' according to file(1). Nobody sends executables except worms.
Now I am testing this filter implemented in postfix/procmail/perl/munpack/file. Next week it will be installed system-wide. Filter like this costs nothing and is effective enough to stop next epidemy.
Someday I used MS Office. I thought it is the only software that can do what we need because our country, in fact, is owned by Microsoft and US.
Last year I have tried OpenOffice. It was nice, although not easy to use. It has nice vector drawing package. Anything else was copied (at least visual part) from MS Office. Anyway, it is nice office package with russian and latvian language support.
For geeks like me these "ofice suits" are too hard to learn and use. I prefer \LaTeX{} for russian texts and Omega (thanks A.Kryukov for Antomega package!) for Latvian ones.
20 MHz? Not enough for firewall if you have something faster than modem. Really.
Good job!

Now it's time to write new GIMP plugin called "print a buck".
Input parameters:
1) Currency: USD/EUR/LVL/...
2) Resolution: 300/600/1200/2400 dpi
3) Value: 1/2/5/10/20/50...
I've just scanned 500 LVL (~900 USD) banknote with both Photoshop and Corel Photopaint. They work great! Lets print it!
This is another reason to use Open Source Software :)
I think somebody should write GIMP plugin called "paint a buck". Input parameters:
1) 150/300/600/1200/2400 dpi
2) USD/EUR/LVL
3) 5/10/20/50/100/200/500

That's true. There are many people who use OS other than MS Windows.
Wintel is not an absolute monopoly. Competitors of Wintel are alive. If they will provide us hardware for our software, Wintel will loose twice.
It's time to take a look at Apple and new Sun/AMD computers.
Things become even worse when movie is available only in specific regions. What if I buy DVD in Japan and want to watch it in Latvia?
Is it Solaris or something else?

I hope this will improve quality of their releases. Quality was the reason why we switched to Mandrake four years ago.
Every day America becomes closer to totalitarism. Even closer than we (russians) were in 1900's. You haven't learned our lessons.
See http://www-124.ibm.com/developerworks/bugs/?func=d etailbug&bug_id=3795&group_id=35 for details
Is this problem Radeon specific or common kernel/X interface problem?
Linux 2.6.0-test9 is the best kernel I've ever used. Waiting impatiently for release! Now I don't have any reasons to use BSD :)
JFS still has some issues and no DRI on Radeon 7500. Hope that will be OK soon.
JFS seems to be abanodoned. Recenctly I've found serious bug in JFS and submitted it to their BTS. After 10 days there's no comments, no followups...
Some people in russian-expert maillist report that ASP Linux is affected too.
My ISP blocks ports 135, 139 etc. "for security reasons". Shit!
386 runs Linux RH6.2 (a toy)
P133 runs NetBSD 1.6 (apache, postfix, nat)

The only vendor who prepackages it's OSes with lots of useful stuff -- Media Player, Internet Explorer, Worms, Viruses...
I knew it! Enemies anywhere!
Who need them? Everybody and his brother uses google here in Latvia!
Use anything you want to use for your studies if you can do it and it allows you to achieve your goals!
:)
Goals are primary. Software is secondary. It is our (Open Source people) fault when we cannot prove that our software and philosophy is better
