    If patents can't be enforced we will not see much more research&development for deceases.

    Do you have any idea at all what the development costs are for this kind of medicines?

    Patents as a concept is very important for all economies all over the world and should not be confused with the abuse of patents in the US where to broad and/or to obvious patents are granted.

    Couldn't agree more. The summary is not at all the same as the facts states in the article.

    Some people posting stories here on slashdot seems to think it's ok to make things up just because he/she doesn't like a company.

    Why not staying with the _facts_?

    Witch means Microsoft is paying them to lobby for them, I doubt they pay them to make up fake letters from non-existing or dead persons.

    Ofcause there is but it isn't for sure. That Microsoft is paying some pro-microsoft groups to lobby certainly doesn't mean they pay them to make up fake letters.

    Time will tell.

    I could be Microsoft themselfs but I doubt it.

    There are several pre-written letters that you can choose to sign. There are several pro-microsoft groups that sends these things out.

    I think that either some of those groups sends letters in others names or that some person sends in others names.

    It's quite likely that some sort of investigation will be made because of this so why don't wait and see who has done what instead of speculating?

    How many Joe User do you think uses compilers, emacs, tar, gzip and those things? Not many my friend. For Joe User the GUI and kernel IS what he call the OS.

    This I just don't understand. Windows is very very cheap. The licencecost are almost pathetically low for businessess and the cost of ownership is also typically very low if you compare to various unixes.

    It's $30 for the OS AND Office.

    For schools you don't use the student version, you buy special OS+Office versions per seat from MS.

    Kids needs knowledge that has a value in real life. Office is used about everywhere, Linux mostly by geeks.

    Microsofts OS+office really doesn't cost much for schoolls. It's like $30 per seat.

    Schools also often have some rabatte on hardware but thats alot more expensive anyway.

    So, if they can afford hardware for $500-600 per seat, why can't they afford software for $30?

    IBM get back free labour, thats what really makes this a win situation for a company like IBM.

    AIX days are numbered, windows is microsofts but Linux can be taken over if you market it enough.

    Microsoft has done great on nasdaq this year, Alot better than avarage and has just fallen a few percentage over the whole year.

    Overall, software companies does alot better (calculated in REAL cash, not stockprice) than hardware companies.

    What do you think it costs to constantly develop AIX? Compare that figure to having the open source movement doing the work for free and just put in a few programmers to adopt it.

    You don't see Nike turning down cheap afganistan workers for their shoes do you?

    I think what companies with such strong trademarks and consumerbase as IBM sees in Linux is free labour.

    AIX costs huge amount of $$$ to develop, with Linux all they have to do is to put a few engineers on adopting it. Instead of spending money on developing a whole OS, just write some drivers and adopt it to your hardware.

    Ofcause, initially there will be some high costs moving towards Linux but in the end I think free labour is a all win situation for IBM.

    You can choose witch software you want to run. If you don't like what you run now you can always pay some other vendor, you have alternatives.

    This is why I think it's so tasteless to compare this with slavery. When you enslave someone you take away this persons options, this don't happen here.

    They use linux for rendering because it doesn't cost anything. Those machines aren't really used by any users, all they are doing is rendering. Why spend money on pretty OSes in this case?

    If you are a programmer I would without a doubt recommend a switch, QT is an amazing piece of work.

    If you are not a programmer, well, mess around with both and see how they feel. It's a matter of taste really.
