I enjoy hitting up the local Sears they now have a AOL CD Case that is a clear thing plastic vs the big DVD black case. I've started a collection of AOL CD's (aol.bobtheking.com) with the hopes of collecting enough to send them to NoMoreAOLCDs.com so they can get their million CDs and water AOL's yard with them. If you want to get a ton of AOL CDs though with cases I'd have to say the best way to go is to find a disgruntled worker at one of the retail stores that provides AOL CDs with cases.

I guess in theory that you probably could. It might not be the greatest beowulf cluster but it would be cool to have nodes all over a building. Be like and as we continue our tour you'll see my 2ghz Athlon proccessor based machine with 2 GB of RAM which yes is another node in my beowulf cluster.

I've had the same problem with Cingular service in Janesville, WI. It seems that Cingular's signal is fine outside but once you get inside any building it dies. I have co-workers who use US Cellular and we'll both take out our phones and their phone will be pulling a pretty strong signal where as my Cingular phone will barely have any signal at all. Does anyone perhaps know why this would be and if I could improve it without switching phone services?

  14. My attempt to help out on California Considering Recycling Fees on PCs · · Score: 1

I completely agree with having a charge on dumping electronic parts but I'm sad to hear good stuff is going to waste. I've decided that since I'm new to the Linux scene but extremely interested in getting involved I would join up with another newbie friend and build a beowulf cluster with the most minimal cost possible. We have a vast majority of our 90mhz computer stockpile obtained from computers that have been thrown away (courtesy of my friend's aunt and uncles recycling business). We're finally starting work on getting the computers to all network with our old ISA network cards. Anyway I would just like to strongly encourage everyone to work on a beowulf in their basement vs throwing the stuff away. A day when you old computer becomes just another node in your beowulf will be a great day.

  15. What Happens When A Computer Goes Down? on Towards an Internet-Scale Operating System · · Score: 1

Ok so say I'm Bob and my friend Joe Blow just happens to have a portion of my data backed up on his computer (which of course the computer to back up on is completely picked at random, but for the sake of my question it's going to be my friend Joe Blow). So Joe's data is then backed up on Mary's computer. Say Joe's computer goes down (and needs to be reformatted) but Mary and my computer stay running. Joe can retrieve all his crucial backup data because it is on Mary's computer (perfect right?), but while Joe's computer is down mine goes down too. Now since Joe (or my backup) is gone, what computer do I turn to get my backup that I'm supposed to have from? I understand that Joe here may only have 1% of my total data stored on his hard drive, but what if that 1% is crucial to me? So in reality are we going to have to backup our data multiple times? If everyone's hard drives were spread just twice a cross the Internet onto other people's hard drives I do believe this would present a massive storage problem.
