    Dude, SCSI already runs over fiber (fibre). The SCSI-3 spec for SCSI-FCP is for Fibre Channel.

    Fibre Channel runs at 1Gbit serial FDX (for 2Gb throughput) and 2Gbit adapters are available. They are also looking at 10Gbit technology.

    Most really high end storage uses fibre channel.

    . It wasn't until WinWord 4 that Word didn't act like a port from DOS.

    Only one problem.... WinWord versions were 1, 2 and 6, before they went to the year numbering.

    Why the jump? Because MS wanted version numbers in sync with the DOS version.

    But nobody will fly a Boeing product into the primary exchange, because we have defeated the Evil h4xx0rZ with the USA act! Now we can stop them from posting their '1337' encrypted messages to all their terrorist buddies!

    Just out of curiosity, did the USA Act make it illegal to fly a plane into a skyscraper, or is that still OK?

    Maybe their own senator (Judd Gregg, R-NH) should follow their approach.

    For those who don't know, Gregg wants to mandate crypto backdoors again.

    I think we should just pass a law making it illegal to crash a plane into a building. It'll be just as effective as some of this crap.

    Simple. As part of the ruling imposing the fine, the EU states that MS may not increase the price of [windows/office/whatever] beyond the listed price as of yesterday (being the day before the ruling).

    I'd be happy if Microsoft had the huevos to not even bother to dispute the charges and just pulled all of its software out of the EU, flipping them the bird and leaving them to scramble for dry ground

    Thereby proving the point that they have not only a monopoly, but that said monopoly is a danger.

    I agree. Though it was the SAIT portion of SAIC, which Litton bought, and Northrop now owns (from buying Litton).

    The 486/25 version (16MB RAM/100MB HD, 16 gray scale display) ran for about $25K, wasn't it? This was in 1993 dollars.

    But a "real" OS should not crash when a database server crashes. Yes, the DB server got corrupted, but there's no excuse for it being able to take the OS with it.

    Just a comment it's AFATDS, but pronounced AFATADS.

    I worked on LFATDS and LTACFIRE which were predecessors to AFATDS, and on IFSAS (Initial Fire Support Artillery System), which was derived from LTACFIRE and was interim before AFATDS.

    AFATDS ran on the HCU, I believe, which was a ruggedized HP/UX workstation. It later got ported to the CCU which was a ruggedized Sun. IFSAS ran on the LCU which was anything from a 486/25 (640x480 16color grayscale) to a P-90 (and up, full color TFT display), running SCO OpenServer 2, 3, and 5 (during various points in its lifecycle).

    The Army has always used *nix, just not the free variants.

    Having just reread "Genius", Feynman apparently wanted to turn his down because he didn't want the fame/publicity. Of course, if you turn it down, then you have to deal with the publicity from that!
