    Well, then obviously, what OSS programmers need to do is have a dialog that pops up:


    $APPLICATION has found something wrong. It is obviously not $APPLICATION's fault, it is most likely something else on your computer, perhaps $RANDOM_CLOSED_SOURCE_APPLICATION.

    We highly recommend that you reinstall your entire system, but do not install $RANDOM_CLOSED_SOURCE_APPLICATION this time.

    As a kid, I enjoyed George Gamow's "Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland". I recently introduced my 11 year old daughter to Mr. Tompkins. (So yes, to whoever it was, /.'ers *DO* have kids!).

    It's a great introduction to modern physics.

    I seem to recall that somebody (quite possibly ATI) looking for specific strings in the WinMark benchmark set and doing something special in the driver, just to pump up the numbers.

    Katz is right for once, sort of.

    Because scare headlines/stories boost ratings, which are they going to run:

    "Mail safe for ordinary citizens", or
    "Anthrax! Are you at risk!!!!???"

    Hint, it's not the first. In the US, at least, news is now more entertainment with ratings as the bottom line, rather than journalistic integrity.

    Anyone remember Oprah's interview with Michael Jackson? If you watched ABC news (local anyways) that night, absolutely nothing else happened in the world except the interview. It's all about ratings, and unless their feet are put to the fire somehow, nothing's going to change.

    They already did. This is simply a variant of the honor code virus that I've been receiving for years. Luckily my anti-virus wetware can detect it and prevent its spread.

    OK, I'll bite.

    Seeing as the link was to the Linux-Kernel mailing list, and Alan Cox is one of the keepers of the kernel, we're talking 2.2.20pre10 of the Linux kernel (possibly the ac fork?)
