    1) The dubbing of most anime is crud. For shows like CB, you get a great feel for the characters when you can hear the original voice acting, since much more thought goes into voice acting selection for the original as opposed to the dub.

As I said in a reply farther up, I actually think the voice dubbing in Cowboy Bebop is an example of a good dub in anime. Certainly superior to the work done on Dragonball Z on Cartoon Network, and the DVDs of Record of Lodoss War one of my friends has.

Also, like I said, I actually prefer the English dubs of Cowboy Bebop. In particular, the original voice of Faye annoys the living shit out of me, (it occurs to me though, that maybe it's supposed to... :p) and I prefer Spike's and Jet's English versions. Just my NSHO, though...

The one I always notice is one of the cartoons where Bugs is in the race with the turtle. Bugs makes his own shell and uses a swimming cap to reduce air resistance. Gangsters have a bet on the race, so they try to keep the turle from winning, except Bugs looks like a turtle with his gear, and the turtle is wearing a (really bad) rabbit suit, thus confusing the gangster rabbits.

At the very end of the cartoon, when they find out that they have inadvertantly helped the turtle win, they all say "Now he tells us." I distinctly remember the guy at the end putting a gun up to his head, and shooting all of them through the head, suicide-style. But for at least the last dozen times I've seen it (on Cartoon Network) they black out quickly right after they say their last line.

Ok, so I know suicide isn't exactly the best thing to be showing in a cartoon (or maybe I just have a *really* warped memory. :p) But they showed this cartoon for decades without any kids ever committing suicide over it. Why do they have to go and mess with classics now?

Also, IRC is a big cause and target of dos, as they say.. power corrupts, when people obtain the percieved "power" of being opped in an irc channel or even on the server itself, they often abuse it. I have often been kicked from irc channels for many reasons, my religion, my views, my HOSTNAME, my OS, my nick etc etc etc.
These little hitlers provoke responses, and a dos attack is the only thing most of these people will pay attention to.

Now, hold on a minute. I'm sure it's not what you meant to imply, but you make it sound like ops in channels and IRCops deserve to be DoS'd for exercising their rightful authority.

A channel owner, (or manager/master, or op, for that matter,) can do whatever the hell he wants in his/her channel. Analogy: I kick you out of my house, because I don't like your clothes. That may very well make me an ignorant ass, but does it give you the right to come back later, and burn my house down? It's no different when a channel owner/op kicks someone out of the channel for a dumb reason, and the idiot comes back with a DoS script. The guy should take a hint, and go somewhere else.

Now, it *is* different for IRCops. Most networks (at least, the one I used to oper on,) have standards of behavior for the IRCops. You can't just kick someone off the network for no good reason. But even if you could, most server admins *pay* to run this free service. Should they not be allowed to run it as they see fit?

I'm sorry if I sounded overtly aggressive, trust me, it wasn't directed at you. But I've seen script kiddies use this type of argument ("They won't listen to me any other way.") far too many times, and in my mind, it's no excuse for destructive behavior.

I have to wonder why hardware vendors would be so dead set against releasing their specs. I mean, who in their right minds would say no to having drivers written for free, and getting an addition to their customer base? Could it be that they are afraid that someone will duplicate their hardware? (Keep in mind that I know nothing about actually designing hardware, or writing drivers.)

Assuming that this is the problem, maybe a GPL-like license could be written for drivers derived from companies opening up their specs. The driver software could be distributed and modified a la GPL (hence it would be allowed to link with the GPL'd Linux kernel,) but the license would prohibit the creation of new hardware devices based on the specs used to build the drivers.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it was just a thought...

Now, scratching the card off in the store would be pretty conspicuous, (sp?) but also, if you were buying the cards, you would at least be able to know if a card had been compromised (ie, it's on the shelf, but scratched off.)

I have seen American Beauty and Taxi Driver. Both wonderful movies. But I would go as far as to say American Beauty at least isn't any better than anything I mentioned in my original post.

I don't think anyone actually putting out a Top 5 list can be completely accurate. Hell, just reading through the rest of the comments after making my original posting, I saw five or six movies that made me think, "Damn, I should've said that instead." Dr. Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, The Killing, Eyes Wide Shut (hell, likely just about anything Kubrick did,) Empire Strikes Back (undoubtedly the best out of those four movies,) Blade Runner, The Matrix, Casablanca, Dirty Harry, Gladiator, The Patriot, Braveheart, Planet Of The Apes (the original, not the remake,) Nosferatu (think there might also be a remake of this, but I've not seen it,) Dracula (Bella Lagosi was cool,) Frankenstein (so was Boris Karloff,) dozens more I'm forgetting to mention, etc... I could go on for hours. (But *not* Citizen Kane. I'm sorry, it was boring, and I don't feel enough of a need to be accepted by the film crowd to lie about it. :p)

And that's the problem. I could easily rank any of the movies I named above, including the 5 in my earlier posting, as my top 5 favorites. There's just too many to choose.

Sorry, I realize I got a little out of control there, so back to my original point... a good few of those movies were made before my time. (I mean hell, Nosferatu, it's silent, and made in 1922.) Age has very little to do with it. It's whether the subject material is interesting to the individual, regardless of age, gender, race, etc., that makes a movie good to that person. If a movie can appeal to many, many, people in that way, over a large period of time, that's what makes it a classic, IMHO.
