  1. Re:Ethical revision on Gates Foundation Revokes Pledge to Review Portfolio · · Score: 1

With the amount of money at the disposal of GF, isn't his a bit simplified?! If that toxic-spewing power plant is the only option ... why wouldn't GF spend a few tens-of-millions building a newer, cleaner competing power plant?! That's the problem I see with all of this. The amount of money GF has is out of this world. If they wanted to, they could create whole new economies in many countries. (I'm not suggesting they'd have to build a nuclear power plant, which might be problematic ... but at least a less toxic or non-toxic alternative. That new power plant would create job to build it and replace the existing jobs to run it.)

There is a difference between the poor decisions of a country and those of a single man. Granted, the B&MGF is not a single person, but I can't imagine that BG does not have absolute say over the destination of every single penny he has "earned." So, if he cared, it would be a lot easier for him to direct the charity's spending into "cleaner" avenues.

My point is simply that the countries you speak of are run by governments. Some of them may be led a dictator ... but that dictator will still not have the freedom of spending that BG does.

That's as well as I could put it.

I don't think anybody in their right mind would claim Apple had a "remarkable" market share. However, there has been lots of talk of "remarkable gains" in market share.

Sinclair was attempting to violate a campaign law using a thinly veiled categorization of their ad as a "documentary." It was illegal. They knew it. Others knew it. They got called on it. End of story.

No one was threatening them for supporting Bush; they were threatening them for being loose with the law.

I'm so tired of hearing people say things like, "<sarcasm>Oh, it's Bush so it must be evil!</sarcasm>" Yes, as it turns out, a lot of the things that Bush and his administration have done are evil. Sorry if that hurts your feelings, but it is very plain and undeniable. Some people are just afraid to admit it, because it will make them look like an ass for supporting him in the first place.

actually, it's not anything like any jog/shuttle dial i've ever used. most shuttle dials i have used only turn about 70-some degrees and you can't get any faster than whatever that speed is. the iPod, on the other hand, determines it's scrolling speed by both the speed at which you are running your finger around the *static* ring (another diff) ... but also how long you've been doing that. so, i can scroll through all 8,000 of my songs, in order ... in about 4 seconds. i've never seen a shuttle dial get anyone through a movie in anything close to that.

i guess i have to give some leeway. 1) apple is not perfect by any means ... and 2) it was apparently apple-bashing time at /. (yes, i do realize that they receive too much praise on /. at times as well.)

I'm not quite sure your argument is as sound as it seems.

Taxation of items at sale seems like a great idea to me. This ensures that /consumers/ are taxed appropriately for what they /consume/. In your argument, you state that the taxes on a loaf of bread would be unfair to a lower income family because of the ratio to the dollars they earn. However, consumption does not stop at a package of bread. If you argue that everyone must have that bread to survive, than they all share the same burden /up to that point/. A wealthy person is not likely to eat Wonder Bread (or some other cheap-o bread), nor are they apt to live in the same size house as a poor person. They also won't have the same car. (A lower income person may not even have a car or a house.) So, when the rich guy buys his Porsche GT3, he's gonna pay a lot more money than the guy that just bought the $8k Kia econo-box.

Are there ways to get around this? Yes. But, careful consideration of import taxation could keep the rich guy from buying his Porsche in Germany and shipping it over to save the sales tax.

Maybe my thinking is flawed, but I think that taxing people at the time they spend their money seems logical. People that are just getting by will do just that. People with lots of money that want silk toilet paper (exaggerating) and gold-plated toothbrushes will have to pay their normal extravagant prices, plus contribute a more substantial amount of taxes.

    My "too sense."

it's not exactly that simple. it's not like the installer asks "do you want to install this?" you have to make a copy of the entire install disk, modify it by deleting the file and then burn a new copy. i'd definitely call that "creating a derivative of" which is expressly prohibited.

anyway, it would be nice if people on both sides were a little more understanding. Apple needs to understand that if we bought the full 10.0 version and the upgrade ... it's all the same, really. and other people just need to realize that apple's trying to protect itself, which, as someone else pointed out, is their duty to shareholders, at the very least.

Also, the New York Times article (linked above) is unlcear about the copy protection schemes. However, upon reading the FAQs at Apple's iPod page, it is plainly visible that there is NO copy protection. What is being mistaken for protection is the default configuration which will only sync with one computer ... and only in one direction. However, it is possible to change the default behavior so you can move files freely from (and to) any computer (Mac, that is [for now]).
