You can add all the gadgetry you want, but it becomes a complex tool. People want their music device simple, easy to navigate and elegant.
with the iPod gaining first a color screen (so you can view pictures on your music player!) and now video, it is almost laughable hearing about the desire for simplicity.
What the guy meant was that it's not the feature list that counts the most, it's how well the features work. If they add features that also work as well as the existing ones, they do not break the advantage they had.
That's like commending Syphilis for not being AIDS.
I'd much rather get syphilis than AIDS:
It can be cured (that's big plus).
It's more exotic.
It's 19th century chic!
And whenever I want to act crazy, I can claim it was the syphilis : )

My understanding is the primary reason they brought MIR down rather than rehabilitate it was the presence of mold that they could not kill using means that weren't also toxic to the cosmonauts.
Hate to break it to you, but MY understanding is that exposure to space is also toxic to astronauts.
I am a hardcore libertarian on most political issues. [...] I even support the RIAA suing the hell out of thousands of file sharers because I've lost all sympathy for people who want music but aren't willing to *gasp* pay for it. [...] Then again this is what happens when people limit themselves to voting for the corporatist party (Republicans) versus the socialist party (Democrats). Either way you get a system where big institutions are allowed to become laws unto themselves.
The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is typing, it seems.
That sounds like a pretty irrelevant reason for designing a game console in a non-stacking style. You'd think Nintendo would ENCOURAGE kids to put their drinks on their consoles so they'd spill, void the warranty due to liquid damage, and be forced to buy a new one, that'd just be extra cash in their pockets.
By the same logic, they would have made their NES controller as flimsy as the Sega controllers, instead of the quasi-indestructible chunks of plastic that they were.
Not all companies in history have adhered to the "I hope they break it and come back for more" manufacturing mentality. Sometimes, just sometimes, a company will design a quality product made to last.
It's kind of annoying when people throw around the term 'Judeo-Christian.' The two religions are not all that close, and anyway it's usually just used as a synonym for Christian.
Judeo-Christian Pronunciation: jü-"dA-O-'kris-ch&n, -'krish- also "jü-dE-O- or jü-"dE-O- Function: adjective Etymology: Latin Judaeus Jew -- more at JEW : having historical roots in both Judaism and Christianity
Without a solid scientific and technical base, the economy of Kansas will become irrelevant.
No, I don't think "corn" will become irrelevant. Their corn production might fall behind as others rely on science to save them from droughts and disease, while they pray and redefine "drought" to mean "a small, bow legged lemur", but people like corn: it won't become irrelevant;- )
As for me, I am able to accept that people are born homosexual
I can't accept that! I can consider it, as an hypothesis, but I will NOT simply accept it outright, without any kind of proof. No thanks.
If we're gonna be talking about the scientific method, someone saying "I've been like this as long as I remember" is not proof of a congenital trait. Do you remember all of the significant developmental anecdotes of your first two, three years of life? You don't have to stone people for having sex with people of the same gender, but you don't have to buy all of their claims about how they came about being that way either. Middle ground, dude.
Maybe they were born that way, maybe they were exposed to hormones at an early age that affected their devellopment, we don't know.
Can you tell me why I have taken this massive wave of abuse
Because they give actual toys to real live children, and you complain about it. How many toys have you given to sick children? They have given thousands, and you complain because you say other kids deserve them more.
Where did I say this [to tell us NOT to make the lives of sick kids better]? Where? Tell me you strawmanning fucktard where? fucking fucking moron fuck you, fuck you very much.
You implied it there:
why is it that they pick three of the countries in which children would be most likely to be able to afford gameboys etc. themselves in? [...] I am sure that there would be poor children in India, Africa and South America that are in far greater need.
What made it a troll? Here's why: 1* Deliberate hyperbole in order to make certain readers angry. 2* Message not completely based on author's own viewpoint. 3* Drifting off topic early in the post. 4* Insult of many of slashdot's readers at the end
Dude, maybe you didn't PLAN to troll, but posting "giving toys to sick kids is wrong" in a thread about a sick kid toy drive is garanteed to give you a lot of negative attention, whether you wanted it or not. Adjust your attitude and posting habits accordingly.
Yes, there are kids worse off than those who are recieving medical treatment in industrialised nations. If you want to help those kids: do. If you want to get others to help them, point them the right way. But if you want to tell us NOT to make the lives of sick kids better: Fuck you. Fuck you very, very much.
Now, go give a significant amount of money to UNICEF. THEN get back on your high horse.
I'm a huge fan of penny-arcade and I admire them a lot for doing what they are doing. However, why(1) is it that they pick three of the countries in which children would be most likely to be able to afford gameboys etc. themselves in? I appreciate that there are lots of kids in US, UK and Canada who are having rough lives but(2) I am sure that there would be poor children in India, Africa and South America that are in far greater need(3).
1) Because they live in the USA, near Canada, both former colonies of the UK.
2) But you don't think they have it hard enough to deserve chartiy.
3) Yes, they have greater needs: Food, clean water, peace. When they have reliable electricity, they'll want videogames.
Superficially it shows why the interested parties might have perpetrated a fraud (or whatever they would call it) but it does not show that this was indeed the case beyond my understanding of the detail.
Well, no, it's not proof. I just think it's... obvious. One guy had some much to gain, and he was offering so much to people who had nothing to loose, that what he said didn't have to be true for them to believe it: They were desperate.
anyway.... how do such conversations end, while still polite?
Moses was the king's younger brother. Worse, the king's adopted brother (meaning that even if the true heir died, Moses would never get the throne). So, he ran off with the workforce to start his own country.
Pharaoh said he was the avatar of the greatest god, and he could make the Nile rise and retreat, Moses said HIS god was greater, and he could make the SEA retreat and rise a few hours later! But, tell me, what do desert slaves know about tides? Didly-squat is what: Never seen the sea, never been to school... easy marks.
And you don't believe me. And you think I'm nuts.
I do believe you, and I don't thikn you'Re nuts. I just think you've been mislead into believing an age old lie, because it's comforting. It would be really nice if there was an immortal Jesus to make everything allright, it really would.
Perhaps some guy wrote down stuff and said a superhuman power was backing it up so the fearfull and gullible would do as they're told? No... THAT would be nonsense! No, an all powerfull pan-universal being chose to communicate with Humanity as a whole trough some guy in the desert... that's much more likely. Much, much more likely.
I don't particuarly care for OS X at all. Yeah, it does some stuff well but it's such a different UI for me that I'm just not all that comfortable using it.
I think you don't like change and having to learn how to do basic tasks again, rather than disliking OSX per se... ya know : )
Because that way His Holy Writing appears more suspicious and will be the source of "Sunday school children pestering their teachers with 'tough' riddles like that" for ever and ever? Yeah... that makes PERFECT sense.
Back on topic: Orthodox Jews can't take creation literally, because it anthropomorphizes G-d.
He started as an anthropomorph, but as the religion evolved, and the need for one's god to be stronger than the other guy's god grew, he became more and more powerfull, and eventually transcended human form.
What the guy meant was that it's not the feature list that counts the most, it's how well the features work. If they add features that also work as well as the existing ones, they do not break the advantage they had.
They just can't allow that to happen and still expect to recover the costs of producing content worth recording
You haven't turned on a radio in a loooooong time, huh?

And for those who claim it's not religion, I'll ask again: If not a watered down diety what is the 'I' in ID, space aliens?
Yup: Goatee-wearing, hippie space aliens.
Islam is also a judeo-christian religion.

If the mac is so intuitive then why is it you have to learn how to do basic tasks again?
First, you must unlearn what Microsoft has taught you, grasshoper.
Only then will you truly be able to use the interface intuitively.
I'm refuting the article's author's assumption that because someone buys a Mac or an iPod they are instantly a "convert".
Seriously, it's a computer, not a religion. You're allowed to have more than one : )
I don't particuarly care for OS X at all. Yeah, it does some stuff well but it's such a different UI for me that I'm just not all that comfortable using it.

Hang in there, it gets good.
The God of the Bible is often portrayed not as taking action himself, but instead by working through others.
As far as I know, god never does anything himself, even for miracle: He has angels do the actual deeds.
Answer: He wouldn't. He might want one, though.
Because that way His Holy Writing appears more suspicious and will be the source of "Sunday school children pestering their teachers with 'tough' riddles like that" for ever and ever?
Yeah... that makes PERFECT sense.
The idea is that Moses was simply writing down exactly what God told him to write down.
Why would god need a spaceship... I mean: scribe? Why would god need a scribe?
