What the hell are you jabbering about. Free access across the globe to technologies like PGP may not be the best thing for our freedom and our democracy.

The US Government was concerned about the spread of technologies like PGP to governments and individuals like Osama Bin Laden. Now we have a perfect example of why they were so concerned. I think they were right to be concerned. We've also been concerned about things like Carnivore, and the CIA's snooping on internet traffic. Again, as long as we can be assured that information isn't abused, I have no problems with it, especially after today.

Heard on FOX news in an interview that one of the reasons the CIA lost track of Osama Bin Laden was due to his switching from cell phones to PGP and the Internet for communications. Somehow i'm feeling a little guilty for fighting that cause a while ago.. wondering what slash doters think.

    1. To gain respect and notoriety within the development community. i.e. personal gain.

    2. To punish those we feel hurt us, our community or our profession. e.g. Microsoft's negative effects on the openness of the Internet.

    3. Good will feelings, kindness to others.

    4. To change things, mix it up, cause trouble. i.e. it's fun!

One of the amazing things about open-source - it's regenerative. As people leave a project, more join in. Each adding their expertise to the product. Companies like Microsoft are not going to be able to compete with this kind of system. They are going to have to evolve, or die.

I disagree with what you say. cross-platform code is extremely useful and powerful in todays world of multiple competing operating systems. 6 months of solid initial design can save you a great deal of time down the road. You sound like a hacker - "just get it up and running" often creates the worst, IMPOSSIBLE TO UPGRADE code out there. Good design is extremely important in developing solid, long term solutions.
