In my opinion you retain more, if you don't surf!. I too have Harry Potter V the Order of the Phoenix on CD and in hardback. I caught small innuendos and unimportant tidbits because I had been reading some of the slower sections a bit too fast.

The downside is that it takes a LOT longer for me to listen to a book rather than read it.

The upside is that some fantasy is more tolerable in spoken form rather than written. I am speaking specifically of Robert Jordan's Wheel of time series. Somehow his annoying overplayed gender conflict banter that drove me to wear dark glasses to book store for any installment past the third didn't have the same grating quality when I was listening to it.

From the little I know about the US government I don't price is the issue. Earlier this week in the SELinux a military sysop was bemoaning the use of NT 4 because it was verified or validated or whatever. I lived in America for a long while, the government contracts I saw were filled based on how well you were connected or how much you lobbied/bribed. Microsoft has plenty of money to lobby/bribe and so I expect it will always has some sort of foothold.

However on Groklaw a military man wrote a short piece on how the military loves Linux.

So I suppose those areas that need customizability or security over the unwashed masses ability to use it will some sort of *nix.

After reading the SELinux FAQ, it strikes me that the NSA isn't necessarily speaking of secure in the sense the most people think of. I don't think they really are focusing on security the way OpenBSD do, where the only access to the box is via tcp/ip ports, i.e. a web server. Rather they are also interested in when the box is physically accessible like a workstation in an office or computer lab at the university.

    Is this the primary difference?

Is this why all the extra policies?

    I wouldn't call capitalism a 'clear' winner.

The 2002 per capita murder rate of New York City is 200 times that of Vienna. Plenty of other systems work very well at achieving a different balance of priorities in their civil societies.

It just the USians that say 'Our way is best' and run all over the world forcing capitalist democracies on various unfortunate countries. This in light of their own inability to conduct free, fair and accurate elections is quite ironic. (No disrespect to Jimmy Carter, he's a good man).

In fact given the changes in the US Government and laws, since 9/11, I don't think it would be a far stretch to say that the US is leaning away from capitalist democracy and going more towards a Fascist Theocracy. Or maybe it would be more correct to say that members of the current ruling elite in the US show these tendencies with the approval of a sizable and vocal minority.

Anyway my point is: It depends greatly on the goals of a civil society for their measurement of success and comparisons between them must take this into account.
