Hmm... Tab at the bottom? 1. Contacts on the top, so dust cannot settle on them and 2. So you can put a small screwdriver and pry down to get a sticky plug out. Its easier to push the tab up, then down. Dont most hubs come that way? It a reliability thing.
WHAT? Wait a couple of days? For what? Crud to magically disappear?
There is hope, but not in anything like waiting will just fix itself.
You should carefully disassemble The boards, and look for crud that might short out, and dont plug it in to test it until you clean it, or the capacitors in the power supply might still hold a charge. Get a floor brush, clean the thing, and leave a little soap scum still on it, let it dry and brush the circut boards down, and look at the main volume control, and see if its gooey/sticky moldy. Clean off the inside of the case, and everything NOT electronic, covers, big components with a almost dry paper towel, with some light windex. Clean off the outside of the case too, and wipe down the cords.
Let it dry in a sunny window or in the front seat of your car on a sunny day. ( cover the front controls so they dont get a lot of sun exposure ).
When you DO power it up, the first time, only do it for a few seconds and look for short circuts/other serious problems.
If the thing has *any* *ANY* *any* high voltage circitry, take it straight to a repair place.
Dude, MacAfee and Norton KILL computers. They suck their evil little twisted gooey guts right out through your WALLET! Then you get a new compter and strangle it before its born! ( I almost frothed at the mouth for a second ). Most antiVirus software cuts your performance by 20% to 80%, and sometimes causes it to comatose for hours.
I have a Dell 8200, and a PowerBook G4 17" side by side, and the Dell at 1.2Ghz, is a bit faster from the Stripped Naked XP, but Flash is killing its sleep-walking, and the powerbook just wakes right up, and plays. The powerbook has not been rebooted since the last software update, and its unlikely it will. Everything integrates nicely. I love the wider screen for video, but the 1600x1200 Dell has a DAMN lot of screen area.
I use a free antivirus solution, and if Im not surfing, its off.
BUT TO ANSWER THE ARTICLE QUESTION: The powerbook with a every version of Graphing Calculator, and Mathematica runs very smoothly. I dont do math on the Dell, it could work, but I would have to get another liscense for Mathematica, and I am not in school anymore. Graphics are a bit faster on the Dell, because I went back to DirectX 8.1+, and the Powerbook is too old to support quartz, so If the Powerbook was a bit faster, it would have much faster graphics.
A few more Things Macintosh, in things of technology they left behind: NuBus cards. QuickDraw, All-in-one form factors, ADB keyboards mice and modems, They have speedboated legacy software, ( The Dell Boots DOS, and I have played DOS games on it from 20+ years ago ). Macintosh hardware although abit higher quality and manafactured better, both better quality assurance, and support, kind of synergistly adds up to more than just those parts into something that some people latch on to as good. I am not a fanboi, but they do have some very good products. I have only bought ONE Macintosh new, and have purchased serveral PCs new, and think that altough the Macintosh's are over priced, they are not as overpriced as most people think.
I disagree completely. All you ever need is power and signal. How did PC-Card makers make the connection? A slide out connector. Digital camera and mp3 player, they can use it too.
The 5 pin-mini connector was designed to make it easier to get the orientation correct without bending the pins, ( its called a DIN connector, and its a german design/standard ). I think its appropiate to run 100 feet to a router, but the RJ Physical standard is so much more reliable.
Why use mini-din? If the connector is at the back of the computer, then all you need to do is twist, and you can get the orentation right. If its RJ, then just put the tab on the bottom. ( Note: I have returned ethernet cards for their jack orientation. I dont think that Motherboard mafactures will EVER GET A CLUE. ( I have never seen a motherboard that has the connections in the top, and the tab on the bottom )
The engineer who designed the motherboard connector for Ethernet should be SHOT.
I actually called MaBell, and talked to some design engineers for the RJ connectors, when I was thinking about wiring my first Network. Phone jacks and Ethernet cables are ULTRA reliable when implemented properly. ( Umm.. Did I tell you my first network, is still in use and the cables are still working? )
The idea that every component uses them is extrodinary. If all my devices except my Video card used Ethernet/RJ11, and was self configuring? It sure would make everything a WHOLE LOT EASIER!
Make your motherboard a Ethernet switch! BRILLIANT!
If she was getting call backs, she should tell EVERY ONE WHO CALLS, AWS are scammers, and they should register with the FTC: and START Signed and dated PHONE LOGS. Every one I hear gets these phone calls, I show them the origional post card that started it all, and my phone log. I have clued in about 20 people, and we have filed over 15 reports for illegal telemarketing contact, i.e. Dont call EVER, and... they... call @ $500 per complaint.

It makes the system heap smaller, and flushes out LRU crap from the OS. Something that it should have had in a feature all along. It works increibley well on a Terminal server. Excellent. Increases stability, speed, usability, capacity.
Marks solution? Buy a laptop with 4GB of ram, and get your company give you a superdome to play with.
System 3 256MB of RAM, 32MB shared memory, so its 224Mb to start. Peak is again at 100%, and I have shaved Win2k down to 46MB, so I have about 178Mb free. 2x is 448, so I made the swap partitioin 416, and the Swap file size is 400. Current use is...crash master @ 380Mb. but its fast....
Ok...Now I have only the attention of the few... Best kept secret? CacheMan! Cuts down the ram footprint, and only slightly impacts the swap file, while makeing the whole damn system MUCH more reliable. Cant wait to get it on the 2k system.
I left out something: You sould shave off 2xRAM for what you would never use! ( i.e. Max Commit is how much you cannot swap out! ).
So, If you have 512Mb Ram, and you only use 420 of it, then if all of that was swapped out ( dont swap out UNUSED RAM DUMMY! ) Then you can shave off at least 80Mb off your virtual memory partition.
The next cut should be look at what you really use Real+Virtual. L@@K at your Page file usage in Task Manager. With A Browser, a Word Processor and Adobe Acrobat, Im only using 488 Swap file.
OK! Ill play a movie. Only went up my 30Mb. Geez.
Point is You need to look at what your maximum page file USAGE is, and add 10% to that, for the partition size.
System 2: 512MB Ram Peak is at 100% Swap partition is 896Mb. Swap file size is 448~890Mb Current use is 525Mb ( abd Mut$oft recommends 760 ) Which is to say, you shoudlnt waste disk space on Recommendations. ( and the movie is still playing )
The idea is rather brilliant. It would combine steady state with expanding. It would appear steady state locally, for a time, then it would either expand forever to heat death or osciliate.
Too bad Hoyle is dead, Ill write his friend at Cambridge and see what he says. ( I know quite a few astronomers there, and at Cardiff ).\
Takes me three to four minutes to get WindozXP to swap out all of the extra stuff, after I fill ram up a few times sequentially. Makes the system Cacge real small too!
But really, on a Windwos 2000 server, without a ram manager, I can get two Terminal services clients running in Application mode. With a Ram Manager, Its at least 5 for four hours, and then I bang it again, and it will work for the rest of the day, and the two accountants for a few hours more. ( Machine has 512MB Ram, and only supported 1 TS client before I "tuned" it up. ).
Ram is 512Mb Swap Partition is 840Mb, Swap file is 384 to 839Mb. ( Hmmm head scratcher.) Currently Alocated 512, ( any my system monitor deltas are always in single digits! i.e. Run the performance Monitor ferchristsakes! )
I have made hundreds of swap partitions for OS X, AU/X, Windows, Schmindows, and just about every flavor of Unix I came across.
I would advise... For Windows, load Process Explorer, and look at the Commit Change Peak RAM. Nice...
Now load a browser, a word processor, and Acrobat. OR Load the game you want to play.
Make the partition the size of that peak RAM+10%. Make the swap size, the larger of the system cache or the minimum peak commit change. ( There is a brilliant trick here, but Id have to kill you...)
System 1: 1024MB ram. Peak is 70%. Swap partition is : 1916Mb, 64K Clusters. Swap file size is : 512~1668Mb Swap file size on OS Partition is 2Mb. ( Someone warned me about this, and I actually listened. Sure has helped when imaging drives )
More Later...( It gets trickier for smaller ram values...) I am working on a 512MB system, a 384MB system, and a 256MB system.
I agree with Stallman, but for quite different reasons. Essentially, if you allow your computing resources to be utilized by an annoyomus task, you in fact are creating a virus/Trojan hybrid. Its entirely possible to use distributed to create virus/Trojan code and or zombie PCs. The storm bot-net is essentially that, a cloud/mesh, and runs and IS SUPPORTED by MICROSOFT and its poor security.
Hmm... Tab at the bottom? 1. Contacts on the top, so dust cannot settle on them and 2. So you can put a small screwdriver and pry down to get a sticky plug out. Its easier to push the tab up, then down. Dont most hubs come that way? It a reliability thing.
