I was going to pick up on that sentence too; the bottom line is exactly that - Apple, RIM and Google are all in the mobile phone OS business to make money. It's not so much a problem for Microsoft, but it will be a huge problem for consumers, as the network carriers all have clauses that say something like "The customer is ultimately responsible for all of the billable transactions (phone calls, SMS, data use) detected by the network and billed back to you, the customer."

I'll bite. I use Opera as my Browsing weapon of choice. You can import bookmark files (Opera, IE, Firefox, Konqueror) into it easily. Nerdlist has published instructions on how to export to an html file, which you can then import into your browser, but I'm not sure how well the tags & notes would import along with the bookmarks.

Opera has nicknames where tags could go and description fields you can add notes to on Bookmarks, but whether you can port them over automatically or have to do it by hand I don't know. Maybe a canny coder will make an Opera Widget or Extension to help user port their bookmarks over. If you make use of Opera Link you can synch your bookmarks (and more) to your online Link account and choose to make your bookmarks public or private, as you so desire.

You're not the only one; I run the Easy Peasy distro on my Eee PC and it has a whole load of non-free drivers bundled into the installation purely to make life as easy as possible for the end user. Those people who really want a totally free system with no closed source software can have it on a myriad of different flavours of Linux.

Personally, I want to run what works - if it's open source, then all the better. Having said that my favourite application is close source - Opera. I wouldn't use anything else as a Browser. YMMV, clearly....

It doesn't break Federal law, but it may be against state law. Recording someone without their consent is a felony in Illinois, and probably other states as well.

IIRC, recording a telephone conversation (mobile or fixed line) without someone's knowledge and consent is a breach of the Telecommunications Act in the UK. Of course, there are exceptions that apply to the Security Services, but even they need express permission to tap/monitor a phone line or mobile number.

It's usually the power units and/or motherboards that have been by far the most common failures in any computer I have owned, or used. All credit to the guys who built that. Given how much processing power it's got under the hood, noise levels of less than 20db are pretty damn good going; a normal conversation at a distance on 1 metre is about 40-60db - and TV at normal volume is about 60db. Every 10db increase is a 100-fold increase in intensity, off the top of my head (the decibel is a logarithmic base-10 scale).
