Right now D2 only benefit is that you can change your threshold on the fly and that you can get abbriviated posts with it. I understand that later the post content will gets updated with new post and moderation, but how is that going to be handled on the client? The page better not suddenly scroll because a new item was displayed above.
Anyway, something I would like to get is an option to reduce the noise on the screen in the 'control box'. Something like hiding poster names, signatures, reply-to buttons and such. That way I could get more content on my monitor at the same time while having the choice to turn them back on if I want to check who posted that brilliant (or not so) comment.
In the article, they mention DogPile SpySearch as the place they got the list of searches for their video. I think a few of us clicked the link because when you check it up it says 'Die Slashdotters' every 10 or so entries...
Why make it so complex? The computer was reported stolen by Wells Fargo with all the information, so the FBI issued a request to AOL to notify them if anybody logs into such and such accounts. Once it happens, the FBI simply had to check the phone records to know what is the number of the guys connected and voila!
I work at a phone company in a country without secret services and sophisticated hooks into any ISP and we would be able to pull that out in a matter of minutes.
I'm dropping awefully late in the conversation, but this link is more relevant than ever.
It's a good article from 1980 about the why's of a shuttle over a rocket.
There is an article on the same subject at: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20000724/pritcha rd_pfv.htm (link doesn't want to work...) . It's fairly interesting to read and gives you a pretty good idea about how much trust you can put in the client machine: not at all!
That idea reminds me of the way cable company work. They offer tv channels (content) to customers in exchange for $$. Each cable (or satellite) operator price their channel the way they want and offer the packages they want.
To extend on your idea, the syndicate could act more like a cable company. Instead of having to deal with all the content provider for revenu sharing, they could buy the rights for websites (which doesn't need to be exclusive) and then offer the package they want to customer for whatever price they want to set.
Website could then be covered by different syndicates and be offered in different package. This way, no one argue over the revenues since the contect providers get a flat price (or whatever agreed with the syndicate).
I'm probably repeating the same comment as someone else, but I don't have time to read all the thread and I feel compeled to add my bit.
Two words: Do it. Get your degree, even if you get crappy grades.
First, if you had to deal with another company, would you prefer that the president has a high school degree or a university one? Which one would make you feel more confident in the company? Sure, there is plenty of brilliant folks with only high school degrees, but having a university degree proves that you are a cut above the crowd. That is good for your business. Check Phoenix University, they offer Internet classes. You can even get a MBA instead of a technical degree since you may be interested in that.
Personaly, it's also going to do you a lot of good. You'll learn new things, even if it's only that university is bull. But most likely not. For every 3-4 bad teachers there is a good one that is going to make a long lasting impression on you.
There is also something that is mostly overlooked when it comes to higher level education: your contact network. I've heard a guy say one day that even if it cost 25 grand per year to go at Harvard, that money was very well spent indeed. Why? Because you gonna make buddy amongs the future ruling class of america. When your old drinking buddy is vp of BigCorpAmerica, you'll be happy to have that contact.
Contacts are really important if you have your own company. That's how you get contracts. Ok, it's obvious, but the link is not often made about WHEN you are going to make those contacts. University is THE place. Over the years it takes to get a degree you are going to met thousands of people. You are going to get to know hundreds of them.
Finaly, a last reason to go to school: you are going to be exposed to views differents than yours. It's going to give you new ideas and broaden your horizons.
Get your degree, whatever it takes, you won't regret it.
Btw, get used to drinking or if you don't like drinking, take up another bad habit, it's kinda mandatory:-)
It took human a long time to learn how to fly because we didn't know the principle of flying...
Let's face it, all those guys did was to build a robot with wings and then feed it evoluted set of instruction about wing flapping. It's hardly a breakthrough (sp?).
What would have been amazing was if they had given a bot a pile of wood and plastic and it had figured out how to fly from that.
What they did was simply giving the 'bird' a set of instruction and meseare the results. If it's bad, ditch it. If it's good, build upon it the next (semi-randomized) version.
As simple as that. The 'bird' didn't learn to fly per se.
Yes DAOC is fairly bug-free and sane but it is also fairly contect-free or fun-free past a couple weeks.
There is one thing about Everquest: it's addictive.
I wonder if, at one point, the gouvernment will step in and regulate the market. If the online worlds become detrimental enough to the individual (likes drugs) and the society (due to health care fees or loss of productivity) maybe they will be forced to.
I don't know exactly on what grounds the gov passed laws to make drugs unlawful (if it was morals, population health or economics), but maybe we have on our hands a similar 'product' here.
At the very least, if MMORPG are to get out of the 'niche' market they are currently in and become widely used by everyone, I would like the companies making them more sensible. Or if the companies fail to see the point of doing so (like because of a customer backslash), the gov should do it.
As it is now, they give the background and you can play in it. However if there is something wrong it the background (aka bugs) they are not responsible for it. You lose, let's say, a Big Bad Vorpal Sword of Cheesehead Slauthering because (let's get a totaly fictional situation that _never_ever_ happened to me) you drop it on the ground and their clean up code is messed up and the item goes *bam* gone, in 0.03 seconds. Well, they won't give it back to you, because, somehow, it YOUR fault if you lost it. Doh? When the market gets more mature, the companies better follow. However we all know that the addictive part of EQ is to get more power, more items in the longest amount of time as possible (hey, they want your money!), so why, ho, why? should they play 'fair' with you?
You laugh, but you aren't far from the truth. I work for a phone company and just with OUR systems, it's hard to join 2 tables together. The names are hardly spelled the same way in 2 tables, you can't trust the address, the customers don't have to give their SSN, etc.
Basicly, there is no easy way to link 2 tables together in a consistent way. Here it is probably way worse than in a 'normal' country, but I'm sure the end result is most likely the same.
You can't use the name alone, obviously. DOB and name is good as long as it is spelled correctly OR you are in an english country (I'm not aware that SOUND works for other languages, but most likely). Using addresses is a mess in itself, even if you can come up with a way to type them always the same.
It takes a lot of will to link 2 systems together. Much more that a matter of joining the tables. I guess this is a blessing for piracy and a curse for my day to day work.
As far as sharing it with your family, I don't really have a clue, but it sounds like fair use, albeit a bit stretched.
However your argument about your brother sharing it with the rest of the internet is flawed. Yes, the show is broadcasted in his area. The broadcast company paid for the right to broadcast in his area and another broadcast company paid for the rights somewhere else across the country. By making the show available on the internet, your brother is actualy breaking the boundaries of his own broadcast. He may even make it available in areas where it is not yet broadcasted. Hence, it is a really clear breaking of the fair use rule.
I'm working for a phone cie and it all make sense. The companies pay for the bandwidth, but they fail to carry the overcharges to the people causing it, hence, losing money (or not making as much, depending on your side).
It is going to spell the end of the P2P network? I doubt it. There was plenty of people ready to download massive files over their 28.8k modem earlier and there will still be people willing to do it. We cannot keep those rather large download figure while paying 30$. It was nice, but it's really coming to an end.
Now, if only the customer service could improve...
but if the government takes away out right to bear arms (which they sure as hell can), then we have little recourse against our own government
If you can take a tank (or a missile for that matter) with your gun, I'll give you a medal. But seriously, 2nd amendment made sense way back when the army only had small arms themselves. But since the invention of the military airplane, bomber, missile, tank and the metalic spoon with a sharp edge, it went down the urinal.

No one seems to have mentioned it earlier, but consider going to Canada, simple because it is way cheaper to study there.
As a non-canadian, you will pay 4x more, but it will still be 4x cheaper than in the US or UK. If money is a criteria, it is well worth checking into.
In the article, they mention DogPile SpySearch as the place they got the list of searches for their video. I think a few of us clicked the link because when you check it up it says 'Die Slashdotters' every 10 or so entries...
(no link added not to add insult to injury)

You know, with all the flying pigs we've seen lately...

I'm curious how long it can take to write a meaningful query and how long it takes to execute.
How many query do they get per hour?
It looks like it's a pretty interesting job at any rate: tap into the conciousness of the global brain...
Does the study demonstrate that the 'video game' they played was Solitaire?
Mod this gem up!

I agree. While on one hand they used a technique known as 'evolution' on a set of instruction, it falls short of being a breaktrhough.
It took human a long time to learn how to fly because we didn't know the principle of flying...

> ((revenue -cost) / revenue)-Other expenses).
Are you sure? I know nothing about economy, but it seems to me that a ratio minus an amount is not pretty math.

Well, that's the way I still see it.
You made a mistake with your euro/USD conversion. It's almost on par now. It was 0.95 USD for 1E last week.
