    Could this be used to eliminate the steam turbine stage in nuclear (electric) power generators? Might be more efficient and surely safer as long as there is some way to buffer in case of a sudden huge drop in demand for the output.

    I think he just means that their layers don't see the GPL as a trap for IBM. It may be that if Microsoft code was published it would be found to contain stuff they have neither created or licensed.

    Not exactly critical but cost-effective--My family doctor in Juneau, AK has a spirometer feeding the serial port of a 2x 5-1/4 in floppy driven pc with a printer on the parallel port.(no harddrive) He gets US$85 every time you blow into the thing.

    The fact that they were prompt and up-front about getting back the bad chips without having to be hounded in the press reflects credit on Transmeta.

    DLL morphing is what finally caused me to give up on W95 on the desktop. In linux at least you have control over versions of shared libraries.

    Print 'em! I'm not giving up my noisy old impact printer because it's the cheapest way for me to get REAL manuals for most of the software I download! I'm willing to shell out the bucks for the shrink-wrap versions if they include a good manual. (When thumbing through the book I often find useful info besides what I was specifically looking for.)

    How 'bout the water trap in drainpipes. It has made indoor plumbing practical by blocking gasses, odors and microbes from escaping sewer systems. This device is simple, effective and has a long-time effect.
    Imagine a large office/apartment building without this feature.

    Magazines, newspapers use the size of their subscriber lists to negotiate ad prices with advertizers. I think an online `subscriber list' is probably a better tool for them than just a `hit log'. Doesn't bother me.

    The recent slowdown of net traffic due to simultaneous, widespread damage to MCI's backbone seemed rather ominous to me.
    Attacks on communication systems don'thave to change content to be effective. (Just shoot the pigeon). If done simultaneously with a physical attack something as simple as an organized ping-flood between widespread servers could bring traffic over public-accessible backbones to a crawl.
    As I'm having trouble submitting this it appears that Slashdot has been `Slashdotted'.

    I hope he's paid enough attention to fastenings/closures. In my experience Brown bears do some pretty subtle things with latches and slide-bolts while quietly getting into smokehouses while doing no damage. The owners of the smokehouses usually blame kids or the neighbors until they stay up at night to find out who's stealing their fish!
