You should never be able to pay a customer to specifically exclude a competitor. For example.. If you're paying a company a sum amounting to $10 to go with your product Y that costs $100 and exclude product X, it would mean your competitor would have to sell at $90 in order to compete - assuming both products essentially do the same thing. It artifically lowers the competitor's price... kind of like what has happened with AMD and Intel.
I would very much prefer them to support Debian rather than openSUSE.
Well I'd rather them support Ubuntu and my friend would rather Redhat. My dog likes Gentoo because he loves compiling.
Every time a company tries 'throwing a bone' to the open source community and chooses a system to support (which will inevitably filter to the other distros), the linux geeks go, "But wait.. I like this distro instead."
I've used linux quite a bit before.. but it is always stuck on a 2nd or 3rd box I have around. I love the new Ubuntu...
except.. gaming support on linux is shitty. The games I have run on linux worked okay - but it took hours to set them up properly. Unreal Tournament 2003 is the last one I played on linux that had a linux port available..
I play games about 10% of the time I use my computer.. nonetheless, bad gaming support is what keeps me from using Ubuntu 100% of the time. I do not feel like having 2 operating systems intalled on my computers.
I'm not a 'gamer' by any means.. but games are important enough to me to keep me using Windows.. I would love to switch.. but I'll switch when the linux coders decide to push for a more compatible gaming system.
With all these bullshit patent, copyright, and now 'intellectual property' lawsuits pooping all over the place.. and the greedy lawyers earning their greedy reputations, I predict a new kind of legal letter...
It's called the 'Fuck Off Response.'
See.. it goes like this... Company A sends Person B a cease and decist letter. Person B sends a letter back saying, 'Fuck Off!'
This letter back symbolically represents the hours and hours of time consulting a licensed attorney, paying a licensed attorney tons of undeserved money at exhorbitant prices, that Person B is not afraid of large Company A, and that person B is willing to go through all the trouble to fight the original letter - without all the actual trouble.. just symbolically.
So, in other words.. a huge company with an army of lawyers may only choose to use what I have available to defend myself. If that is only myself and a public attorney, then said company may only use equal or lesser - or otherwise lose by default since company is not stooping low enough to reach me in order to even take a swing.
Little guy (or girl) says 'Fuck off.' (but en masse)
Didn't someone crash an entire house in that area in the early part of last century? I remember seeing some sort of old black and white footage about it.. aliens without brains or courage.. something like that.
People-ready business on Ubuntu linux! means a lot to me. People-ready business on Ubuntu linux! is what I say to everyone. People-ready business on Ubuntu linux! is my slogan. People-ready business on Ubuntu linux! is the way I live my life. People-ready business on Ubuntu linux! rocks the house.
I bought an HP Photosmart D7360 a few months ago.. Since then, I've printed at least a thousand 4x6 photos. I've changed the ink a bunch of times.. but I always wait until I finally see a photo print with low ink.
However, if I use the lame HP software that starts up with my computer (and slows it down quite a bit), it flat out refuses to let me print unless I change 'empty' cartriges first. It also annoys the living hell out of me with 'low ink' popups while I'm playing video games or doing other things - like the printer is the whole fucking reason I exist.
In Ubuntu, I just use whatever driver it found for my printer... and I can print beautiful prints with 'empty' cartriges. It pisses me off..
But, I will admit, I really do get about 200 4x6 photos with a single set of cartriges like HP advertises.. this is the first printer I've had (besides laser of course) that actually lives up to how many prints it advertises.
Anonymous Coward, I can do all of that in XP. Though, when my friends typically try to do those things you suggested in Vista, they end up waiting forever for things to copy. So maybe Vista doesn't 'lock things down' currently.. but it sure as hell slows them down.
I'm not repeating shit like a fucking parrot.. I'm just stating my own experiences with Vista through being 'tech support' for my friends. Sorry the shit I say seems to coincide with the vast majority of peoples' experiences with Vista and what they end up saying about it..
I am completely convinced Vista is a piece of crap. Out of all the opinions I read on the Internet - hardware review sites, software sites, Slashdot.org - it seems the overwhelming majority is against Windows Vista. The only real reviews in support of Vista seem to be people intent on trying to justify their $499 'Ultimate' purchase.
Then, out of all my friends - many of whom have upgraded their computers in the past few months - NONE of them are still running Vista. Though, a lot of them bought computers that either came with Vista or they installed Vista - only to uninstall it after finding it ran like shit.
And, for those that say this is just like people refusing to upgrade to Windows XP after Windows 2000 - it is NOTHING like that. Windows 2000 and XP were both fairly solid and stable. Even the first release of XP was rock solid compared to Vista. Vista actually crashes on STABLE hardware.
There are way too many disadvantages of running Vista that it makes no sense to run it or pay for it. Microsoft has always had its head in its ass.. but this time its head is so far up its ass that it's going to choke to death.
Consumers want more control over their media.. Vista locks it down tightly. Consumers want more security.. Vista prevents them from maintaining their own systems. Consumers want less DRM shit.. Vista activation is much worse than XP.
If Vista cannot show the average user how bad it is that Microsoft keep its monopoly, then Microsoft has nothing to worry about.
If Ubuntu ran games.. seriously.. games, there would be a mass migration.
Also, it should be illegal to get exercise because exercise can cause injury. Plus, being fat makes you less likely to hurt yourself if you do fall (we'll ignore the increasingly likelihood of falling because of severe fatness.)
God.. why the hell aren't more things illegal? Speech? Bad speech can piss people off and others can get offended.. Fucking ban it OMG!
Browsing the Internet? There's bad stuff there and directions for making boms (spelled wrong because I'm paranoid).. OMG make it illegal!!!
Everything that can do anything bad should be illegal!!!
Goddamn.. how the fuck does this make it to the front page of Slashdot? The article suggests using an EMP gun to disable the offending cell phone? So, it's some kind of perfect EMP that targets ONLY the cell phone and ignores the car's electronic systems - systems REQUIRED for slamming on the brakes... What the fuck?
And, the system not only can distinguish between drivers and passengers talking on the cell phones... but it can also detect whether drivers are properly using bluetooth devices.. or even built-into-the-car bluetooth devices that enable hands-free talking at all times?
God.. what a bunch of fucking total morons. Seriously.. whoever decides money needs spending on this crap.. whoever decides a knee-jerk reactionary law banning use of cell phones while driving because they're distracting just because it's newfangled technology that everyone seems to agree is fucking useful while ignoring all other distractions that have been around forever - eating, talking to passengers, looking at scenery, smoking, doing drugs, reading directions, playing with the fucking stereo, road head..
Seriously.. whoever takes this seriously needs to understand that he or she is a fucking moron who needs to start thinking about the entire picture and quit trying to solve society's problems with one specific fucking instant knee-jerk at a time.
God.. fucking morons.. FUCK YOU./eh.. I don't feel this strongly.. but who cares.. this is the Internet.
Spammers won't give a shit or report their activities. So, they won't be the ones paying the tax - even though they do the majority of emailing.
However, legitimite businesses and users would be more likely to attempt to pay this tax - which would mean keeping track of outgoing emails.. to how many people.. resends.. attachments.. sizes?
Come on Congress! Get a fucking grasp of the ideas you're trying to make into law before you even talk about acting on them. Congress seems to be full of a bunch of morons making snap decisions based on ideas they cannot begin to comprehend.
The only thing Congress should even talk about taxing is Internet-based sales.. Taxing data that essentially costs ZERO should be taxed at a flat rate, to be fair, which would mean ZERO tax income. They could even set the rate at 500% for all I care.
How can any 'respected' scientist even question global warming when the public response is cutting off funding and ridicule? I merely posted that I have trouble believing either way - but that it seems that I'm being 'pushed' into believing global warming whether I see hard evidence of it or not - and I get modded a TROLL.
Seriously? Am I a troll? A +2 modifier on Slashdot, 10 replies, good discussion ensuing.. I posted that I haven't even made up my mind and I get modded to a TROLL.
The stupid fvcking idiots that are trying to convince me to believe in global warming the hardest are also the ones that want to silence any sort of questions I have on the issue. How the hell will anyone be convinced that the 'consensus' is human-influenced global warming if anyone that doubts it is ridiculed and told to STFU?
I'm not a fvcking TROLL... well this post, maybe.. but not my first one.
Why can't people just say, "Hell.. I'm not sure which side I believe yet." ??
The problem with controversies that have become too political is there is NO WAY to get good definitive information about global warming or any other politicized issue. For every respected scientist that comes out in favor FOR global warming, there is another respected scientist that comes out against it.. Then, to add to skepticism, funding is often based on which way scientists are leaning..
Then, we have idiot Hollywood blowhards telling us if we don't believe in global warming, it's like not believing in the Holocaust or something to that effect. I do tend to believe that most Hollywood people that want to speak their minds are idiots. They're the ones that haven't gone to school or studied any amount of logic or reasoning skills.
And again.. 'some are saying this is the warmest winter on record.' Well, this fvcking winter (at least for Florida - where I am) is colder than most. And, it's NOT OVER. And, the NOAA report that the media based the 'warmest winter on record' claim tends to say this was nothing more than an AVERAGE WINTER.
So.. basically any claims made without fact or merit end up becoming better fuel for the skeptics.
Again.. I haven't decided which way I believe. Give me some real, unbiased facts, and I'll maybe make a decision. But if there's any hint of bias, I will see it and disregard said report. As far as I can tell so far, it really seems like claiming global warming in 2007 is nothing more than claiming global cooling as in the 1970's..
I'm all for completely getting rid of copyright.. Copyright is so goddamn fucked up now that I think it would be easier for us consumers to not have copyright at all.
This is unfair competition, imo. Here's why...
Supposedly, without the environmentalist wussies crying about any kind of progress, we could be travelling to other planets.. and even other stars.
Just be happy; it's linux.
Wanna swap votes? I like your system better.
what he said..
The old servers were Macs?

Meanwhile.. the Walmart in my area is in Spanish. It's full of Mexicans.. lots and lots of mexicans.. and each mexican has at least 4 mexican kids..
Do they pay taxes? Do they pay their hospital bills? Nobody knows!
Are they illegal? YES!.. BUT THAT'S OKAY!!!
With all these bullshit patent, copyright, and now 'intellectual property' lawsuits pooping all over the place.. and the greedy lawyers earning their greedy reputations, I predict a new kind of legal letter...

I could've made this way funnier.

How about the death penalty for downloading mp3s? Also, we should definitely kill the family members of people that download movies illegally.
You see this face?! This is a happy face!
If AMD does anything to enforce DRM, I'm selling my shares.
That reminded me of shaving for some reason..
Goddamn..
