    My point being, many peoples' natural inclinations are like that. We don't require a video game to modify our behavior. But you, who are not naturally like that, wouldn't have considered performing a kind act unless you were playing the game.

    That's the point I was making. Us normal people don't need a video game to point us in the right direction, we do it without thinking. Sad, eh?

    You know, there are people who would have done that without thinking at all about a video game. Heck, they would have gone out of their way to see that the foreigners arrived at their destination safely. I grew up among them in Texas.

    Why do you feel it's necessary to assure everyone you wouldn't have done such a thing normally? Doesn't that make you feel the sting of shame?

    I have been subjected to numerous lectures about why the BBC is utterly superior because it's not profit-motivated. Now, here they are, selling out one of their cultural treasures for cash.     How will NASA deal with government regulations regarding race and gender? Hiring only the most qualified candidates would obviously result in astronauts who are as lily-white as the X Games, so that's a non-starter. How much weight will race and gender be given in the selection process? And how will this be transparent, so that watchdog organizations can keep track and know that racial preferences have been observed?

    Affirmative action has been used and found to have positive results when applied to other walks of life. So why isn't it being done here? Geeks should support affirmative action for the best reason of all: "it just works". For problem-solvers, this is like using Windows XP for a solution, you might not like it, but if it works then it gets chosen.

    What would affirmative action in the Valley look like? And how can it be implemented while we have a sympathetic African-American president?

    Actually, it's conservatives in America who are all for taking risks with the lives of astronauts. Who are the ones who shut down playgrounds because the equipment might cause a few broken arms per year? Who are the ones that make 180 degree coffee an unacceptable risk? Who are the ones who require self-censorship [finlandization] instead of permitting someone to say something that might be interpreted as offensive? Who are the ones who have taken to characterizing [wrongly] America as a "backward" nation, and what are their motivations for doing so?

    Nah, it's just in insane countries where political maneuvering has resulted in [the desired outcome of] labor being priced through the roof.

    Here in China, I've gotten several smartphones repaired. Mine, and those belonging to others. I've gotten my electric shaver repaired [twice], my laptop, the exhaust fan in my bathroom, my air conditioner, and probably others I've forgotten about. It's amazing what can be done when the mandated cost of labor isn't $35/hour.
