Holy contradiction, Batman!. I actually did a quick install of Mandrake 9.0 on a Toshiba laptop the other day and the setup routine couldn't find the touchpad. How come I can load a 10 year old DOS driver that works with a touchpad but not an 18 month old Linux distro?

I completely agree that the majority of the new gadgets and gizmos are either refinements or the merging of two technologies, but I'm surprised you put 3D screens in that category. It's a technology that could eventually drive a fundamental change in how we interface with computers - calling it derivative is a little unfair IMO.

  9. Re:The motivation of a software pirate on Piracy Helping Larger Game Developers? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I agree, the author is barking up the wrong tree in terms of the pirates' motivation. Most people will naturally try to justify their decisions with some sort of argument, and in the case of piracy it's do deflect the blame onto something else. In this case, the obvious target is the big, bad publishers who are already raking in more money than they know what to do with (until they go bust, of course).

I doubt anyone REALLY pirates applications for any other reason than to avoid paying. Anything else is just a self-satisfying cover story.

  10. Level Editor Campaign on Thief 3 Website Goes Live · · Score: 1

One of the things the fans have requested from the development team is some sort of level editor or SDK. Thief 1 and 2 already have a mass of fan missions available, and it would be tragic to see the community that's built up around the game be dissipated. As of right now it seems that Eidos don't have any plans to release an editor, so we have to do what we can to persuade them otherwise. There's a very modest campaign homepage at http://www.thiefpetition.com/ (we're working on it!), and an online petition at PetitionOnline. If you've ever created or played and enjoyed a Thief fan mission, please show your support.
