I saw him speak once downtown (NYC) and was turned off by the fact that some lady got up during "question time" and asked somethiing related to propriatery software. He then stated he would not answer her question because she was talking about closed-source. I'm sure he's done wonderful things for the community, but that doesn't matter. I'm not impressed.
Wow...what kind of person develops their entire opinion of a country based on one fucking movie?
Not even a great movie at that. Michael Moore set out on a mission when he made that movie...and you watch that movie and decide that it's all there is to the US???
You have been discounted as a valid opinion Mr. Coward.
I hate articles that end up saying, "I'll use Linux if you make it like Windows". or "Is Linux ready for the desktop (I'm using Windows as a bench-mark)"
I hate windows. It's not fun. Linux is fun. Don't make linux not fun...

That's my patent! I thunked it up first!
I think I shall patent my ass.
Patent...say it like, 10 times in a row...and it will start to sound weird.
I mean, you have MS who is probably concerned that they are gonna lose out on all these deals to Linux because they don't show their source code, which governments may one day have as a requirement for goverment software. The government really isn't interested in compiling and fixing bugs, I wouldn't think.
A new project called TheOpenCD had this very thing in mind. Create a CD with tons of great open source software for win32. However, they seemed to have gotten stuck at the installer phase and I've not heard anything from them in about 2 months. Anyway, you can still get the list of software they proposed to put on the CD at:
One big motivation to stomp out piracy is the current piracy situation in China. It's pretty amazing, I think. Right now, Piracy is such a problem in China that it actually has an impact on their economy. However, the piracy is not on software like Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop, it's on the software that governs assembly lines and supports large scale manufacturing, etc. It's so established that there are actual private networks that have been built specifically for shuffling pirated software back and forth. So why doesn't the government go after these private networks? Because the cost of bandwidth on these networks is much cheaper than the regular service providers...which means you have regular, legal companies using these pirate networks for everyday business use. And to top it all off, the average joe looks at these pirates as the underdog against the big bad govnt. The Chinese government can't touch these nets because they risk putting a lot of small businesses, well, out of business. That's pretty scary to me.
I don't see people becoming more computer literate! I see windows (XP) getting dumber! Is it too much to ask that people actually understand how a computer works? Maybe one day, people will learn Perl by the age of 10. Maybe one day, people will understand the difference between a word processor and an operating system! The REAL problem is that people who use windows are VERY dependant on windows. They don't understand computers at all. They understand a box with a start button. People were more computer literate when there was DOS and winblows 3.1. Windows 95 just made them idiots! Asking the country to switch to Linux is like asking the country to switch to electric cars.
Who the hell has time to get all pissy about someone saying something is gay! I have lot's of gay friends and they have the brain power to distinguish between a slur and something just being gay! Don't you have other things to worry about? Like working in an office that becomes completely M$??!?!?! I agree to the original post. I run a completely M$ free life and couldn't be happier. I wanna hear about Linux, Unix and Solaris!
In my bathroom my roommate placed the Period Table of Elements. I like using these for my machine names...hydrogen, helium, berylium, etc.
My girlfriends father names his dogs (Afgans) after countries such as China, Uzbekistan (wrong spelling of course), etc. Which is also neat. Southpark characters work, galaxies.
Keep in mind, folks, that is one of the greatest things about being in the Linux world...there are so many distributions!
We have the option of going with a Linux distro that supports our old machines or going with a distro optimized for new machines. Let's just hope Linus does the right thing.
I can't really say what topics should be covered, but one thing we all notice is the structure of a tech book:
Intro - History of [book topic]
Chapter 1 - Hello World
Chapter 2 - Strings
Chapter 3 - I can't maintain structure..losing....target...
Index
I hate the books that cover the whole 9 yards (unless it's a reference). Why not have a book such as, "writing a USB device driver for Linux 2.4", "Or, Effective web page templates using PHP on Windows". Then cut your prices by about 40%. Then I can stop waiting for hand-me-downs at Strands at start shopping at Borders again!:)
I installed Mandrake 8.1 on my Toshiba Satellite and have had no problems. Most importantly, my USB wireless Logitech mouse works. It's almost as if...this laptop was made for this disto/kernal combo.

I picked up a Satellite about 4 months ago for around 1300. Mandrake slid on like butter. After first install, the only things that didn't work were sound and the winmodem. Hover, the latest ALSA and LTMODEM drivers cured that. Linux even identified my Drive as a DVD. Now, to get the software working....

Ha ha ha ha.....reinforced pants.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Microsoft , at one point, owned part of SCO Unix.
But, I'm sure by now, all ties to MS have long been gone...I'm sure....MUST BE!
Paladium is simply a solution to a problem Microsoft caused in the first place.

They share and make illegal copies of all their music, they steal bandwidth. Man! Will they stop at nothing?
I would hate to hear someone say that. We don't need more reasons to enforce crazy laws!

Good point.
You've made a difference.
Have a nice night!
