    You can find them here.

I haven't seen project documentation [templates / standards / requirements] on their site, but perhaps you can be the one to create them.

Maybe the Internet group (né geeks) would have a better case if it weren't for the fact that so many of us support a right to infringe copyright holders.

Now, I don't like DMCA or UCITA, and I want to have my privacy and speech protected.

But I am not going to fight for the right to illegally copy the latest Janet Jackson tune.

That's true, actually. And by the fifth version (I'm using IE 5.0 for Mac) they often beat the competition.

While I agree with his sentiment, the idea that MacOS will "finally" have long file names is absurd. MacOS has supported file names up to 256 characters since day one.
The HFS+ format supports filenames up to 255 chars, but MacOS X will be the first to allow _users_ to take advantage of this feature. Even in MacOS 9 the maximum length for a filename is 31 chars.
  6. SETI@Home-type processing for Human Genome Project on Caltech DNA Sequencer Patent Question · · Score: 1
Regarding this quote about Celera's advantage:
Celera Genomics has certainly shown staggering drive. It has set 300 PE-made sequencers and some of the world's fastest computers to work 24 hours a day in an effort to be the first to map the genetic code. By contrast, the Human Genome Project moved painfully slowly before Celera's arrival forced it to step up its pace.
If the Human Genome Project had a major distributed computing project (Like SETI@Home or Bovine RC-5) behind it to perform the sequencing, they could compete with Celera Genomics much better. This could be the ultimate "open-source" project, in more ways than one.

Although I can appreciate the amount of expenditure that Celera Genomics is undertaking in order to complete this monumental project, it would still really suck if a commercial interest had intellectual property rights for the blueprints of Homo Sapiens.

Does anyone know what kind of processing is required by this project, and indeed if the sequencing effort can be performed in a straighforward manner with distributed (as opposed to local or even parallel) computing?

I'm skipping straight ahead to that shattering laws that don't work part. How do you shatter something? Break it willfully, purposefully, and repeatedly. Putting 300,000 kids in prison in not even close to a realistic solution.

Who said anything about prison? Metallica is simply providing Napster with a list of their users that have infringed Metallica's copyright, in accordance with Napster's offical copyright policy:
Napster will respond expeditiously to claims of copyright infringement committed using the Napster service that are reported to Napster's "Designated Copyright Agent"...

The federal government had NO LEGAL AUTHORITY to do what they did

Of course they did - the INS has automatic custody of any person that enters this country w/o proper documents (such as a visa). They temporarily released Elian into his Miami relatives' custody, but revoked that after (1) his actual father arrived in the US and (2) the relatives' home was found to be an unhealthy environment for Elian. The great-uncle was required by law to return Elian to the INS (and properly notified), but refused to do so.

I think Janet Reno showed great restraint in continuing the negotiations with this de-facto kidnapper even after the INS had obtained a legal search-and-seizure warrant. Remember, just because Rush Limbaugh says something doesn't make it so!

Actually, lying to a jury, even a grand jury, is only considered perjury and a criminal offense if the subject matter is relevant to the case. In the Paula Jones suit, the presiding judge ruled the adultery questioning (including Pres. Clinton's responses) not relevant to the case. Therefore Pres. Clinton was not commiting perjury, and would never have been prosecuted if he were an "ordinary citizen."
