  1. Opera has lots of missing standards support on First Reviews of Mozilla 1.0 Roll In · · Score: 1

While everything seems to render perfectly in Opera (which probably has one of the best CSS rendering engines out there), the underlying DOM1/2 support is really bad.

No wonder Opera is "so fast"... it's missing even the most basic Document Object Model (DOM) support.

This means standard compliant ways of altering different elements on the page don't work at all. And I'm not talking about Layer tags or other proprietary MS solutions... I'm talking pure, standards as posted by the w3c.

Things like changing display attributes (to make things visible and invisible... great for expanding/collapsing bars) dynamically doesn't work in Opera, when the same exact standards compliant code works in Mozilla, IE:Mac 5 and even version 5 of Internet Explorer for Windows.

Sure, as a web developer, I could make a workaround for Opera users... but that's no different than putting proprietary MS IE code.

Opera seems to look great on the outside, but the underlying engine is flawed. No wonder it can claim to be so fast and so small... when several-year-old standards support is still missing.

And the worst part is that people that use Opera don't even realize this.

  4. Transformers: Generation 1 comic review on Transformers On the Move Again · · Score: 2, Interesting

What's interesting about the comic book is, besides the fantastic artwork -- that is it actually has an interesting story so far:

    To quote from TheFourthRail:
"Sure, this book will appeal to the grown-up reader who cherished the Autobots and Decepticons during his childhood, but it's not just the reader that's grown up. There's a darker edge to this incarnation of Optimus Prime and company. This is Transformers as conspiracy-theory book, and it's far more interesting than I ever would have expected."

Also, check out the cover of the page. The art style is in a high-quality anime-like style. It looks like something you'd find in a cell animation than in a manga-type book. This is how Transformers are suppose to look! You'll find more at the comic's producer, Dreamwave Productions.

  5. GameBoy better watch out... on Sony SmartPhone To Work With PS2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

IIRC, Sony previously mentioned it wasn't about to enter the whole portable gaming domain with a portable Sony system to rival Nintendo's GameBoy series. They always said that cellphones and palms-devices would be where people will be playing portable games in the future.

Nintendo is totally unchallenged in the portable gaming area right now. Maybe it's just feature bloat in cellphones now... but I think Nintendo should be watching this very closely.

OmniWeb was tested for its claim for web standards compatibility at A List Apart.

Basically they though it had great promise, but had a "long way to go before it can live up to its developers' claims to any sort of useful or meaningful CSS and DOM support."

  7. Privacy topic? on Windows XP is Listening · · Score: 1

Well, seeing how the title was "Windows XP is Listening" and also seeing how the news was filed under the "Privacy" topic (with a large binocular icon) doesn't really help prevent this whole "knee-jerk" response thing.

  8. They've been planning this for a while now... on Morpheus DOS'd and Moving to Gnutella · · Score: 1

According to their previous press release back in December, they were planning to merge the FastTrack and Gnutella network somehow in their 2.0 release.

  9. Leaders better at creating networks... on Marvel Universe Is Almost Like *Real Life* Society · · Score: 1

Captain America has always been portrayed as a the most capable leader in the Marvel Universe. He's not that strong and he's not the smartest of the bunch. He's only at enhanced-human levels, with no super powers whatsoever. But even Thor, the god of thunder, respects him and follows his orders under the superhero group, the Avengers.

Spider-man is often a loner and misunderstood by the media. Anti-heroes, like Wolverine, keep to themselves. Mr. Fantastic is a genius, but it's very hard to work with him. Hmm... One might assume Superman to be the the most networked of all the DC heroes.
