I certainly respect LPs (I own about 50 myself) and some of the other "analog" formats you listed. But VHS? Are you kidding? VHS looked like half-baked crud when it was released, let alone by today's standards. Add to that the fact that it has crappy shelf life and what do you get? Total crud. It was never a format anyone wanted, it was just convenient at the time.
I think they mean "leak" as in "free advertising".
Good point though - the cover art looks pretty much like you would have imagined it. It certainly isn't much of a surprise. Who buys DVDs for the cover art anyways? Albums... now there's a format with cover art!
Insightful? You mods must all be American. This is why the US cannot manage it's economy.
Debt is how much you owe. A deficit is the amount each period (year) you are going further into debt.
If you have a mortgage you have a debt. But since you are paying off the mortgage each month you are getting a little bit less in debt. So you do not have any kind of deficit. It will take you a long time to pay off that mortgage, but it's entirely possible to pay it off without changing your spending habits.
If you have a deficit, like many first world countries do today you are completely screwed. The debt is already huge but get this: EVERY YEAR WE MAKE IT BIGGER. Without a serious change in spending habits these countries will NEVER be able to pay off their debts, let alone reduce them.
Do you understand the difference? If you don't, try running for office. The US needs can always use a few more politicians who don't understand why this is bad.
So you're saying that a hard-core bible-thumping Christian would put intelligent alien life forms on the same level as cats and cows? That's my point: some religious whackos will believe that aliens are evil/inferior to us because they were not created in God's image.
I can't wait until we meet some real live aliens so we can see what the bible-thumpers do.:)
"Is out society better/safer than it was 30 years ago? 60 years ago? 90 years ago?"
Well, yeah actually I think it is. Sure there's a ton of stuff wrong with society today but the further you go back in history the more freaking awful things you run into.
Epidemics, the cold war, world wars, witch burnings, the crusades, massive religious persecution, etc. etc. etc.
History is not the happy fun place we like to think it was!
So is it ok to watch movies that glorify criminal behavior? Isn't that "over the line"? How about movies where the hero violently kills masses of enemy henchmen? Killing is wrong, isn't it?
Get over yourself. The media shows us all kinds of things that, by your thinking, are wrong. I'm not excusing that, but these games are nothing new.
I think many relgious people would have a big problem with life on other planets. God created man in his image or so I've been told. So if life on other planets turns out to be unlike man then obviously those lifeforms were not created in God's image, so they must be the spawn of Satan. Next comes a Holy Crusade so destroy all life in the universe except man. Yay fun!
Anyways, I'm agnostic. I hope we find some cool shit on Mars.:)
Encryption in a MMORPG client is an inconvenience at best. The hax0r can read bytes right out of the client process after the data stream has been encoded.
Sure it sounds like a lot of work, but people have done it before for several games. Don't underestimate the amount of work some idiot will do just so he can cheat in an online game.
Have you tried Dark Age of Camelot? Combat is "turn-based" like most MMORPGs but because of the way the combat system is designed, competitive player-versus-player combat is really more like FPS than "traditional" MMORPG.
It may not be quite what you're looking for, but combat in DAoC is certainly not "click attack and wait for someone to die".
No way! If we found an artificial life form it would be peachy. We'd have the artificial life form plus we'd know there was at least one other life form somewhere (the builders). Two for the price of one!;)
Note: I just realized my 2000 queries/second figure came from a googled PDF that is about 2 years old. The real number is probably much higher but I'm too lazy to google for an accurate figure. Suffice it to say that the root servers handle a really, really big boatload of queries.
You can't be serious. Do you have any idea how many DNS queries per second fly around the net? There are two big reasons why DNS is hierarchical and why that is good:
1) It allows for ownership and responsibility to be cleanly delegated to the appropriate parties.
2) It gets the load distributed.
DNS is not perfect, not by a long shot but I think you have no idea of the scale of the problem it solves.
The root servers handle almost 2000 queries per second, and that's for stuff that is normally cached for days! DNS Servers responsible for popular sites (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Dell, etc) routinely exceed 5000 queries per second JUST FOR THAT SITE. You want to centralize that? Ummmmk.
There's something to that but pretty much everyone probably agress that some government interference in business is pretty much required to keep things in "balance" - whatever that is.
On the other hand, the underdog corporation is always the our favorite poster child for "The American Way/Dream/etc". Unless said corporation actually manages to follow through on their business plan and make it to the top. Then suddenly they become our new evil overlords and everything they do (even though they've been doing it for years) is anti-competitive.
My thoughts exactly. Most case mods posted on/. are kinda lame. I'm sure most of them take a lot of time and are labors of "love" but they just don't look all that impressive.
This one looks awesome though. I don't think I'd want one in my house but kudos to the creators!
Absolutely. It's great hit a search page that loads in the blink of an eye reliably. It's a nice touch that for holidays and what-not they dress up the google image just a little bit.
If they add more useless crap to www.google.com I will be very disappointed in them!
I'm sure the original Hummer was a hella good vehicle. But do all the suburbanites really need a Hummer (whether or not its shitty)? These are folks who drive from their home to the office with the occasional side-trip to Safeway.
Everyone talks about the war being all about oil but nobody talks about America's dependence on foreign oil combined with the current trend stupidly big yuppie-mobiles.
You cannot ascribe rational logic to someone who is willing to sacrifice their own life just to take out a few enemies. These people have already lost the battle to see reality in terms we can understand.
However, from a purely selfish viewpoint when I look around at all the idiots inhabiting this great nation I definitely do *not* want all of them carrying guns just in case they get mugged.
This is the kind of attitude which does not help foreign relations for the US. There is a reason why almost every country in the world has a reason to dislike you.
Yes, a lot of that is envy. The big dog is always the most disliked. But there is more too it than that.

The word water strongly implies the liquid state.
Solid water is ice, not "solid water". Water vapor is similarly never called just "water".
Saying "liquid water" is redundant but in this they probably wanted to spell it out for the morons.

I don't think "courage" is the word you are looking for. For that matter I don't think you meant to say "admire" either!

"Microsoft does not do anything that it doesn't think will produce revenue."
This is neither unusual or negative in corporate America. Does GM suck because its primary focus is to make a profit selling cars?

In simplest terms, "nobody likes a winner".
Methinks someone places too much trust in their spell-checker!
:)
Somehow it seems better to spell badly than get the wrong word completely.

You sir, are as American as apple pie. You should restrict your remarks to that which you know.
People will pay for almost anything. Visit a supermarket and check out how much bottled water they carry.
Tap water in North America is fine in almost every town. Brita filter plus tap water is as good or better than most bottled water.
(If you live in Sludgeville USA and your tap water is contaminated with pig feces or toxic radioactive waste I suggest you move.)
You cannot ascribe rational logic to someone who is willing to sacrifice their own life just to take out a few enemies. These people have already lost the battle to see reality in terms we can understand.
That is certainly believable.
