    Despite its affinity for selling Windows-based computers, Dell is also a staunch supporter of Linux. The company has invested almost US$100 million in open-source developer Red Hat and sells PCs and servers based on its operating system, such as its Dell PowerEdge SC430 with a dual-core Pentium.

    On the desktop, Dell has been installing Linux on its Precision workstations for a couple years. Dell spokesman Liem Nguyen said the company will continue to do so.

    ssssh! you'll wake up all the mass-transit freaks that think waiting for a bus that only shows up every 40 minutes and scheduling your life around same is a viable option for people outside core city areas where the schedule actually makes it feasable.

    next thing you know, bobbie-joe the hippie will be petitioning congress for the "single use" car to try to get people on the bus.

    Then you'll get Boeing all excited about pushing single use jumbo-jets. You think safety is iffy now? just wait.

    OT but... people also like to keep an eye on their shit. I lived in an apartment complex about 10 years ago where the laundry room was within about 100 yards of my apartment, but unless I was doing a single load, I loaded it in the car and drove it there.

    Why you ask? Because the fucking lowlifes across the street would DASH over to the laundry room the second they saw someone leave a load unattended and steal it. I was in college at the time, and replacing all my fucking clothes because some fucking tweaker bitch with 6 kids took my stuff to put food on the table (read: to buy more crank/meth) was not really high on my list of "things to do just to show people I'm not 'Lazy'"

    Yea some people are lazy. Some people just don't want to make the "window of oppertunity" for shithead thieves any larger than necessary.

    I wouldn't call it "honor" so much as "not wanting to go bankrupt from getting our asses sued off".

    Even with the limited audience that DivX got, enough counsumers would have attacked Circuit City in court and otherwise (as well as the shysters that they partnered with) to ground the company into paste, if they had not taken the "unlock all" step.

    To this day I will not set foot inside a Circuit City purely on principle. If they could have gotten away with orpaning all those players, they damned sure would have.

    I wouldn't have given you $10 for the average life expectancy of a Circuit City store manager in that scenario, but I'll betcha the VPs and up would have all kinds of bodyguards...

    the lengths that SAP will go to manufacture bluescreens/coredumps when a non-SAP certified operator tries to install their product are immesurable. SAP makes a lot of money off it's certification program. It is a given that teh certification program includes a cheat code taht avoids the "crash".

    I've been forced to deal with supporting SAP in the past. I'm not going to pay for SAP certification out of my own pocket, and my employer doesn't want to do it for me, therefore we do not support SAP.

    Contrary to popular belief, Enterprise Class means 'supportable' in a large (enterprise) environment.


    IOW, a GUI even a monkey can use.

    I've worked support both internally to a company and for a major software publisher. Monkey is too kind a word for most of the lusers who called me for help. I helped 'em all though, and did it with enough of a virtual smile that they all praised me.

    Another year or two of vodka and the experience should fade from my memory..

    I dunno, my year-old Tungsten E has a 126mhz processor, and it's an "entry-level" palm. I've gotten more use out of it than I do my iPaq, and I actually think it's because it doesn't try to be a full blown PC.

    I agree that they did stick with the Dragonball series of processors for far too long though.

    You do know that those things regenerate, right? Please take the tree-hugging shit somewhere else. Now that this species is no longer faceless it stands a much higher chance of getting sympathetic support from non-communist-green humans than it did before.

    Chances might not be great now, but when it was a "myth" they were non-existant. Noone in his right mind is going to make sacrifices to protect the existance of a species that has not been proven to exist. At least we know for a fact these buggers are still alive. That's worth whatever sacrifice to that species that the photos necessitated.

    Shortly into the first portion of the article is the revelation that many of the developers were old-school UO PvPers, and that there was an emphasis on PvP for that reason.

    That's enough to ensure I'll never even look at the game, or finish the FA for that matter.

    I don't play games to be someone else's victim. I'm not interested in being part of their sociological experement. I want to be entertained, not greifed.

    Translation: "We are not currently ripping people off with our pre-orders, and our minimum wage managers are incapable of gauging demand well enough for our buyers to just buy the right number of consoles, so we're going to pretend to be sold out for a while, so that when we magically "discover" more bundles about 3 weeks before launch, the drooling masses will fight each other for the right to be bent over the sales counter and screwed."

    Fuck it, it'll be in the store when I go to buy it (not from EB) or it won't. If not, the money will go to some other toy this year. Besides, MS said they were producing tons so that there would be no shortages. Far be it from me to belive something Microsoft said, but in the grand scope of things, I think Gamestop/EB are being more deceptive here than the manufacturer.

    Blizzard really needs to adopt the same kind of disciplinary attitude on their forums that SoE has (and yes I hate to recommend SoE's style).

    The screaming immaturity will be drastically reduced when they learn to say "OK that's quite enough. your posting privledges are permanently revoked. Keep it up and we'll nuke your game account too".

    There's already SUPPOSED to be zero tollerance for personal insults against Blizzard staff. They need to start enforcing it and showing that they are doing so.

    Of course the younger portion of their core audience was brought up to believe that their actions should not have consequences, so it might take a few bannings before the message sinks in.

    BTW, the average WoW poster doesn't go to the forums at all. It's mainly Bnet kiddies with an over-inflated sense of entitlement.

    Events where players across all levels were allowed to affect other players without their consent would really drive subscriptions... into the ground.

    Most people don't play games to roleplay a victim.

    Social experiments don't work outside of games designed to be a social experiment (like ATITD). I certainly don't wish to pay to be part of someone's master's thesis. I have better things to do with my free time.

    Look at what happened to UO. A tiny minority liked the whole dreadlords era. The people that threatened to quit if that crap continued far outweighed that minority, so the game was changed.

    This isn't so much an "event" as a way for assholes to grief their fellow players (on the same faction, which is against the TOS, mind you).

    Getting sick as a random event in the game is one thing.

    Getting sick because some shithead decided that it would "teh funnay" to kill you while you were trying to get something done is quite another.

    Bans have already been handed out. More should follow.

    Zul'Gurub is an "instance" zone. A fresh copy is created for every group that enters it. (more or less). The disease in question is caused by one of the encounters in the instance. It is not litterally raging in that zone.

    It is in fact normally cured while the group is still in the zone. the current "plague" behavior is being caused by malicious individuals who are intentionally re-calling to populated areas in order to "greif" other players.

    The hotfix didn't work

    If it goes to the point that Flash has, intrusive advertising, I'd be quite happy if Microsoft kept it proprietary. Then the rest of us could safely ignore it, and there would be a further benefit to using Firefox.

    Agreed. I'm Ok with flash when it's used for animation, but the advertising side "benefits" like shoskeles should cause some people's karma to reach out and strangle them.

    Using a marginally beneficial technology for evil should mark you for death.
