Forget corn, hemp cellulose can be converted to ethanol. The amount of cellulose that hemp provides per square foot is way more than corn could produce and hemp can grow and regrow much faster and require a lot less other energy resources for growth than say corn or trees. However I can't tell you anything about the actual conversion process and how much energy is used for the conversion, but off set the other costs and over all using hemp would be cheaper. Note to all the anti drug peeps, I'm talking about hemp, not mary jane, there are strains that contain little to no THC or cannabinoids so go lurk elsewhere.

Just curious what others who are in my position plan to do when sarge is moved to stable. I'm currently running sarge on all my production servers because woody was just too far in the past. I was originally planning to just keep all my sources at sarge, but I'm worried that sarge will become like woody and fall far behind in updates. Now I'm thinking maybe I should just change all my sources to testing and stick with that. What do others plan to do?

  7. Re:Dell corporate on Where Do You Shop for Server Components? · · Score: 1

I use dell for servers as well, They can usually get pretty good deals on poweredge servers. When I first met with Dell, they told me the more I buy from them, the better the deals get... Bleh! Such crap. I was getting poweredge 1750's for about 1.4K and now for the same exact servers, they're quoting me 1.9K and they wont give me my original price.

On top of that, I find that for other components, I'm getting my ass reamed in prices. I recently bought a Powervault 220s + a poweredge 1750 with a Perc4/Di and Perc4/DC coming out to about $16,000. I figured that purchasing at this level should get me some deals. I added some desktop purchases onto this order, and they wouldn't even upgrade the ram for free, in fact, they gave me worse pricing than what was on the dell website. I had to get them to price match to their own website.

As for the Perc4/DC which is really an LSI MegaRaid 320-2 rebadged, They charged me $788 for the raid card. When I found out it was really a megaraid 320-2, I looked that up and found out retail for that is around $500.

Then yesterday, I went to get a quote for some 300gig SCSI U320 harddrives... the price started out at $1,600, and then after 5 minutes of my rep "smashing the price down", it came out to $1,200. While I was waiting on the phone, I went to newegg and looked up the same harddrive model, and found it for $858.

I'm getting tired of having to pricematch everything, and then waiting a month for drives to arrive from dell. I'll keep buying my servers there, but fuck everything else, it's just not worth the trouble and price.

Oh yeah, and for some reason Dell home seems to have better prices than corporate. wtf Shouldn't the thousands we spend be getting us better pricing upfront?

  8. one way to anonymize p2p apps on Decentralizing Bittorrent · · Score: 1

Is to use spoofed source ip's. But how? I'm not good at explaining things and this is just theory but here goes....

if we were modelling a torrent style p2p app
each download would require 4 parties involved:
    1) Leecher
    2) tracker
    3) uploader
    4) proxy uploader

and here's how it would work:
    1) leecher starts to download the torrent and contacts the tracker
    2) tracker contacts the uploader and proxy uploader and specifies the leecher's address the uploader's address and the proxy address. This info is given to the uploader and the proxy.
    3) the proxy is not told about file names or anything, just ip's and ports
    4) the uploader sends the torrent to the leecher with spoofed source ip's, the spoofed ip is the ip of the proxy.
    5) uploader keeps sending data packets to leecher, if the leecher loses a packet, it contacts the proxy to resend the packet, the proxy notifies the uploader and the uploader resends the packets with the spoofed ips.

hehe just a thought, I could be totally wrong. I haven't thought more in detail than this.

Lets analogize this to the IT world. Say you have an web app for your company that isn't working. The company is loosing millions of dollars every hour that it's down, the product is dying. You're the admin/developer and you check it out, you glance at the code and dont see any immediate bugs, the web server is listening on the right port, etc etc, you spend about an hour looking at it and cant find anything wrong so what do you do?
Tell them, "I dont see anything wrong you hypochondriacs!" ??? Obviously something is wrong, the product isn't working, money is being lost. What he needs is a doctor that is devoted to helping him, one that says "Ok, there is something seriously wrong as you're having problems standing for too long and just developed a murmer out of nowhere, we're gonna keep trying and debugging until we figure this out."

perhaps it isn't a infection, but geez, why can't doctors be more like Unix admins? I subscribe to many mailing lists and sit on irc and I see people trying at fixing things sometimes for weeks and months on end, never giving up and then eventually they figure it out. If Unix admins were like doctors, well, I dont want to think about that...

  13. Re:A great distro that's starting to grey... on The Importance of Being Debian · · Score: 1

I think it's really sad that this article should be soo accliamed by some slashdotters. I'm glad debian is getting it's fame, it's a good distro (though I think apt-get sucks major ...), and I used debian for many years due to it's commitment to stability. However the article makes it sound like debian is the only distro that stays true to standards and stability.

"after evaluating six different Linux distributions (including Red Hat and Suse), gave Debian the nod."

Yeah that tells me absolutely nothing, which six distros did they test? Obviously they didn't do a very thorough test if they found debian to be the only distro that held importance in standards.

"the decision to go with Debian was made because of one thing: standards."

So that's the one thing eh? Well for one, they obviously didn't try slackware, there are many non-standard things about debian and I find this article to be very close minded and devious. Praising debian is one thing, but distorting other distributions by making debian sound like the only non-commercial, stable, and standardized distro is wrong. I have love for all distros, but if you really want a stable, non-commercial distro that sticks to standards, I think slackware is the way to go.

PS. There's nothing wrong with compiling from source.

That's also a gross generalization, not all club dj's are married to technics. Many other companies put out awesome turntables, I some times feel that technics is the Redhat or Mandrake of turntables. Everyone assumes a good dj will be using technics because it's a brand people like to throw around a lot. Very corporate approach. I personally use Numark TT-2 Pros and they are my favorites at the moment. Stanton has nice turntables too. But no turntable has left me completely satisfied.
