There's this little concept called interoperability that's very important if you don't live like a hermit. Also, "buy Apple and you won't have these problems" is rubbish. MacOS sucks too. As does every Linux distro I've tried. I have had problems with them all. I've seen a week old eMac die. I've pulled my hair out at Linux issues. So why do _I_ still use windows:
1) Familiarity. I have had years with the OS, and have some hope of being able to work out what is wrong and how to fix it when things go wrong. 2) Software support. Gaming is one area where you're very restricted if you don't go with a windows PC but it's not the only one. Yes there are games for Linux and MacOS but not nearly as many and most developers rightly target Windows for it's market share. I'm truely not interested in the hypothetical of what if everyone bought something else. They haven't and I'm not going to try to change the world on my own thanks. 3) Hardware support. Most hardware I want will work with Windows. I don't have to look in advance to see if it's Linux capable (though I still try to do that since for a long time I would dual boot with Linux). The ability to share knowledge about your platform with others because it's so popular should not be underestimated. 4) Popularity. If I have a problem chances are there are hundreds of others with more technical knowledge that have posted about it on the net. Less users for MacOS and Linux means less shared knowledge out there.
Items 2 and 3 mean that I get the CAPABILITY to do what I want: Run the hardware and software I want. Taking gaming as an example again MS Flight Sim, Realflight G3 and Battlefield require Windows. Yes I could find substitutes but they wouldn't be nearly as good. I like and spend a lot of time with this software.
I had issues with my last Dell laptop (which I'm fighting to have fixed under extended warranty). I have issues with Dell period. I still bought a Dell for my new laptop. Why? Because it was about a half to a third cheaper to get something from Dell than elsewhere with the specifications I needed (In fact my only other good option for something as well spec'd was Alienware, which would've burnt my budget). And that's despite this time going for premium warranty. Basically I could get this laptop, or get something that wouldn't do the job, or go without. So I choose to deal with the issues and get the best I can even if the best isn't as good as I'd hope. That's not an unreasonable choice to make, providing I'm willing to live with the consequences and take the risk.

Seriously, learn to argue with a solid analogy or don't try.
Slashdot, free as in beer, and it helps to have one when you read what makes it onto the front page.
My friends and I did not walk out into a busy road right in front of traffic causing 16 vehicles to lock all four and then have the audacity to flip off, curse, and moon the traffic. I have seen second graders exhibiting this behaviour recently
If you run over a few, their friends get off the road pretty quickly.
Kidding of course. (No responsibility taken for anyone trying this at home!)
Oh yeah I'll just waltz up to my local friendly policeman and say "Hello, I'd like to discuss loitering, because you see someone on slashdot thinks I don't know what I'm talking about".
I use to love Firefox. Then I had a problem where I had to alt-tab out and back for basic things like cut and paste, arrow keys, page up/down, and open in new tab to work on the browser. Once is fine but I'm talking 30 times a day. I had this problem on FF 1.0.7 so I downgraded back to 1.0.6 and that was okay. Then yesterday I've upgraded to 1.5, which also seems okay.
But don't tell me open source is more or less buggy. In the end it's all people building something. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes not. Sometimes other people push them to do the wrong thing, sometimes not. Open or closed, free or pay, any system can be affected by bugs. Anyone that tells you otherwise has a political agenda.
The correct way to deal with this is to show the abusive little girl the error of her ways by scaring the crap out of her. A night in a jail cell would probably do the trick (either that or prepare her for future experiences).
Making a crappy noise that drives her away so she can go pester someone else isn't solving a problem, even for the shop owner. The half wit is probably driving away business. But instead of having the sense to deal with a human problem in a human way he takes the easy way out by configuring a gadget to piss her off so she can grow up to be a nice crim. Oh she won't loiter. She'll be the one in 5 years who's shot him dead for the 200 pounds in the till.
I'm guessing you're either a teenager, or not much into your twenties.
You'd be guessing wrong. I'm 30. I just don't hold contempt for someone because they're young.
I was young once, and when I was a teenager I probably would have made the same post you made.
Probably just to make trouble rather than as a solidly held view.
There is nothing more annoying than a bunch of noisy teenagers hanging around a store saying stupid things at twice the necessary volume.
How about an arrogant and annoying 41 year old hanging around on an Internet message board?
Now that I'm 41, oooooooh geez, I now realize what a typical arrogant, idiotic, irritating, annoying, ignorant young punk I was.
Bzzz. Past tense is incorrect.
I completely sympathize with this guy creating the anti-teenager device.
Of course you do. I know your type. You're never content unless you're whinging about something or someone else. Doesn't matter if you were that 25 years ago, you're not now and you're much better now. I bet you still live with your parent's basement too.
And I was much smarter and more mature than most people my age,
Bzzzt. Wrong. Play again.
but I was still an idiotic twit.
Bzzzt. Past tense is incorrect.
And if someone disagrees with me who is older than that, then you must've not grown up yet.:)
You must be using "grown up" in some strange venacular I haven't heard yet that actually means having a lobotomy.
When teens loiter in front of a store, they are the ones showing contempt.
Funny, I thought if they were in a public place they were entitled to be there. Tell me would you tell a group to move on if it consisted of a minister, a police officer and the town mayor? Would they be showing contempt.
Treat teens with about the same respect you reserve for a mosquito and wonder why they go around shooting each other, or killing themselves. Oh yeah it's the violence in video games and the availability of porn on the internet that causes this. Nothing to do with the increasing contempt modern society shows for both the very young and the very old.
No, it's nothing like that, but you've given a fine example of a straw man argument, for anyone who wasn't aware of what that is.
And you present a fine example of distracting your audience from the issue at hand. This thread isn't on the techniques of argument.
These days, if you get a BSOD, chances are good that you have bad hardware.
Actually it's usually bad drivers. Hence the "bad hardware" may work perfectly well on one OS and BSOD another.
does it say anything about you being a moron because you chose the wrong hardware?
Yeah it does when you imply you are above us all because you haven't seen a BSOD in 4 years.
So it was something to do with the hardware? Oh...
Everything you do interacts through hardware. Name me an activity you do that doesn't if you can. Mind you I can also demonstrate a BSOD using certain older games. Usually directdraw or directsound is to blame. Yes that too uses hardware. As I said name me something that doesn't.
BSOD was common in the days of Windows 95 but it is common no more.
They're not AS common I grant you. Are they resolved? Hell no, you can still get them happening doing fairly standard stuff.
Linux geeks who continue to talk about BSOD can be put into three broad categories. Those who switched away from Windows long ago and would like to make believe nothing has changed; those whose intellectual dishonesty is rivalled only by their insecurity (a willingness to "strengthen" their advocacy with lies); and finally those who genuinely experience the BSOD - and who should think about whether their hardware might be the cause.
I work and play on windows mostly. Not the OS I'd like to choose but I find linux not nearly mature or stable enough for my liking. I've been flamed for that point of view here, but I could care less because I'm not trying to win a popularity contest. I've played with a few linux distros lately but usually don't go much further than setup because they just don't give me what I need in a platform.
I've also had BSODs on a variety of hardware. Should I throw it all away because it's "bad"? Never mind that you solve about 90% of BSOD problems with a driver update (only trouble being the manufacturer must be aware of the problem and have gone to the trouble of producing and posting a fix on the net).
Honestly I don't think you've gotten one fact straight in this argument. You seem more interested in posturing because you've not seen BSODs lately.
I don't believe in shielding them from the truth either. I just question if most porn you'd find on the internet is the "truth" about sex
It's your chance to educate them about the fact that the depictions aren't real, but there is a real industry out there that tries to sell the fantasies and that there are a lot of unscrupulous people who are in it for a quick buck and don't care who they hurt (themselves included).
Let's be real. Your typical porno exists for one reason.
There's nothing at all wrong with getting off, and if that's what you're going to teach your kids you're just instilling in them a legacy of self-hatred that will do more psychological damage than any porno is ever likely to.
I'm just saying that as a parent I wouldn't necessarily allow my child uncontrolled and limitless access to it
So supervise your child damn it. Don't expect others to do it for you, and then call yourself liberal.
In fact you can expand that beyond porn and say that most people wouldn't allow their children uncontroled access to the internet. Or R-rated movies.
So what's stopping you from doing just that? Port filtering? Come on!!! Take some responsibility for the wellbeing and fathering of your family!!!
Of course as the child ages then they should be exposed to more of the real world.
The real world may have something to say about that? You think violence against the young doesn't happen? Sexual and otherwise unfortunately. The younger they grasp what is good and bad for them, and what dangers are out there (the trick being to do this without scaring them) the less likely they'll find themselves in a bad situation. Yes they need to be taught what they are able to comprehend at any given age, but children are sadly underestimated and talked down to. Look around though. Your typical 8 year old understands what sex is these days. Trying to shield them from it is naive. Teach them why the unrealistic depictions of sex found in porn are self-destructive. And no, you don't have to watch porno with your kids to do that.
You are suffering a condition known as the alpha geek syndrome. If I can ask you to stop peeing on that tree for a second please let me explain.
The symptom you are exhibiting is that what you've said is the equivalent of "I'm not having this problem. If you're having this problem you must be stupid and it's your fault" presumably for buying bad hardware.
There are lots of people around the world that run different hardware than you. I've seen a USB network cable (you know 2 fake UBB network adapaters bound by a USB cable) reliably crash a fully updated XP SP2 machine. I can send you the crash dumps if you like. The shop owner I told about this refused a refund and only after much squabbling gave me a credit. Aparently it's not his fault if he sells dodgy hardware either.
It's not the only dodgy piece of hardware I've had the misfortune of buying in the last few years either. I run 3 USB drive bays (2 metal gear, and I'll never buy that again), 3 USB hubs, a camera card reader, a tablet, and 3 printers on my main machine at home. Getting them to work well together has been fun, but not something I'd recommend for a newbie. Also took a lot of trial and error with various drivers thanks to a VIA chipset on my motherboard.
So basically are you saying that anyone who doesn't buy a piece of hardware they haven't seen in action on their exact hardware is a moron? That's a big call (and a rather silly one).
1) The suppliers won't stick to it because they'll try to get an advantage over their competition by breaking the law (eg. sending SPAM via regular email). People will continue to tell each other about it and transmit it on whatever port they want. 2) The users won't stick to it when they discover they can get it cheaper by circumventing the controls.
It'll only be about as wide spread as DVD or music piracy - it just turns the vast majority into criminals who then have less respect for other laws.
I'm about as Liberal as they come and I don't want my kids looking at shit like that
No, actually you're not. I'm not either, but I'd say I'm more liberal since I don't believe in shielding kids from the truth. It's out there and they need to know it exists, why it's not a good thing and why it's not the norm. It's your job to teach them. Note I'm not a father yet and I don't look forward to that little task either, but I hate the idea of shielding children from reality then wondering why they grow up unable to deal with it.
Autodesk killed off GMax about 2 months ago. It was a fantastic piece of free as in beer but not open source software. Lots of people relied on it, particularly in the game mod community. If you want to build aircraft for MS flight sim, it's one of two options. Battlefield 1942 supported it. Battlefield 2 released it's kit just in time. KnifeEdge software who've been promising an aircraft editor for their R/C aircraft sim have instead gone with a private beta for 3dsMax, citing licensing issues - this effectively means there are only a handful of people who can develop aircraft for the product since 3dsMax literally costs several thousand dollars.
I wonder how long the free version of Maya will last under their stewardship.
But I don't think most would go so far as to steal $200,000 worth of Legos. When police arrived to carry away the evidence from his home, they needed a 20-foot-long truck.
Basically he convinced me (a seasoned Engineer) that we need them as much as they need us.
You only need to ever learn one more phrase and that's "Baaaaa!" because you're you sheep and you're brainwashable if you can change your stance 100% in a short time based on a PHBs arguments.
They sell products that they know aren't quite ready yet (vaporware) because the company needs the revenue.
This is a short term act of desperation that actually detracts from the business' value and reputation when said vaporware fails to arrive. Anyone waiting on said product will be much more likely to look elsewhere.
They sell products that they know are inferior to the competition because their Scientists and Engineers made a stupid mistake early on in the product development lifecycle that didn't get caught until too late and the company can't afford to start over.
It is their job to set up the structure so that the engineers and scientists are accountable, and have checks and balances on their work. Selling a product you know is inferior is not a good way to keep a company open.
Basically you're an example of why these morons enjoy their big pay packets. No one is willing to challenge them. Everyone hears what they want to hear. They're happy to cheat, lie, steal, drive a company into the ground, then walk over to the next company to start again. AND WE LET THEM.
What a total load of BS. Here are some facts for you:
1) People use to get married much younger, and many of those couples managed to stay together because they wanted to not because they had to.
2) If a woman wants kids she better start having them by the time she's 35. Assuming sexual maturity at 15, financial/legal maturity at 18, and emmotional maturity in your early 20s, she's got something like a 15 year window to have kids during if she doesn't want to deal with deformities etc. Guys have slightly longer but their sperm count can go down too.
3) If you're a human being rather than a museum statue, you might find you continue to change in all sorts of ways as you grow older. There are many things you need to learn to stay with your partner as they get older and change. Maturity, common sense, and the ability to pay attention to your partners wants and interests doesn't magically appear at any age.
The latest brain theory doesn't change the above things. You're not a pop tart that is done at age 25.
So how does the XBOX (or cars or any other hobby) fit into this? Because when you work hard, you need to relax, too. You need time alone to decompress and enjoy yourself and being suffocated by another human being every free second you have is not always the most relaxing thing.
If you can't be around your SO for a long period of time without feeling suffocated, it's you with the problem. Certainly not every second with them is going to be relaxing, but most of your time should be. Your SO should BE your downtime. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to play games for a few hours a week. But you need to get her into the things you enjoy if she doesn't mind them, and you need to get into some of her stuff.
With my financee and I it's fantastic. She'll let me do my thing on the computer sometimes while she paints. She'll join me in the game playing. At the moment it's flight sims, and Battlefield - she's actually pretty good at the basics in a C172 on MS flight sim, and she's great to run around with in battlefield Vietnam cause she's a crazy woman. She's also someone I can count on to help me with just about anything I want to get done. Guess what though. I'll watch reality TV with her (which I openly tell her I think is crap, but I love spending the time with her anyway) and I've seen my fair share of cartoons this year. We also spent a heap on our engagement party (which I wouldn't have even bothered with except it was important to her).
It's about give and take and making each other's lives better, and understanding that you don't always get to do your own thing. If you're not doing that you don't belong together! Sacrifices shouldn't always make you miserable!
And sadly, it's probably a better quality fix than MS would provide on Warranty
If it doesn't use water or liquid nitrogen it's just not a 133t solution. Personally I'm waiting for the AMDBox360+, which will only run at 288MHz but still kick butt over the 360.
There's a whole new market for you - XBox360 power supply cooling. So yeah stop bashing Microsoft, they're opening up new markets and promoting technology! They're not anti-competitive at all!
(P.S. Yes I know it doesn't run at 360MHz, so please don't reply with something about that.).
Using your own line of logic, a single instance of new hardware requiring a floppy drive means that it makes sense to add the $10 cost of a floppy drive to your system in case you need it.
You're right. Many systems can function without a floppy. You're wrong not to add one anyway in case you need it.

So basically are you saying that anyone who doesn't buy a piece of hardware they haven't seen in action on their exact hardware is a moron? That's a big call (and a rather silly one).
Two problems with this.
Autodesk is not one of my favourite companies.
But I don't think most would go so far as to steal $200,000 worth of Legos. When police arrived to carry away the evidence from his home, they needed a 20-foot-long truck.
Why do you need a truck to move 10 lego sets?
This is getting irritating to say the least. Would all you "mothers" please just go home? Did I wander up to you and ask "Are you my mother?"
Next you'll have machines called "The mother of all computers" released.
Bleh!!!
