I did read the article and what I was saying is that his melodramatic way of stating the freaking obvious is unimpressive.

If you put something in such a way its so easy to misconstrue while simultaneously trying to put yourself up as an nisightful guru you'd better expect intelligent people who aren't bamboozled to say "hang on a minute".

Take something more tangible like a car design. If you lumped destailed descriptions of all the blueprints for the individual components in a nicely bound document without any overall design schematic how hard would it be for anyone to get an overall picture of how the car would look and feel?

What if you asked your average customer to work out if they'd like the car based on these ideas?

This is very much like what you're asking business analysts and users to do if you provide a source code listing and nothing more. If I was in charge of a project, and that's what you handed me after I gave you business requirements, I'd seek to have you removed from the project.

Debian's a very different distro to Redhat. You'll not find it as user friendly for starters, and it has bugs and a slow dev cycle. If you liked Redhat perhaps Mandrake would be more your kettle of fish.

At any one time there are one or two current Windows desktop OS's, 1 or 2 for server, 1 or 2 for Mac, but about 1000 very similar but different distributions for the open source Unix variants, and people wonder why it hasn't taken off on the desktop.

  17. Re:sound in all your rooms on Multi-Room Wireless Sound System? · · Score: 1

Um wouldn't it depend on where you stand? Lets say there are 2 rooms in the house (say A and B) a number of meters apart.

If you're standing closer to room A (or in it), you need room A to be playing slightly ahead of room B, since sound from room A reaches you first (as it's nearer). If you're nearer room B its the opposite because room B is nearer. Since sound is relatively slow, the larger the distance between rooms the bigger the problem.

Honestly what you need to do is talk to a sound engineer that does concert work. I think you'll find to get aweet sound in more than one location you're going to need a setup that not only synchronizes the music but also manages the delays taking into account the accoustics of the rooms.

Much easier is to locate large speakers centrally in the house and crank them up loud enough to be heard through the house but not loud enough to disturb neighbours.

Having lost touch with reality generally lowers your credibility considerably. I've had the interesting experience of meeting RMS once. His coding prowess speaks for itself but the man has the social skills of a gnat.

If something is said he doesn't agree with he won't debate it, he'll deny it. (I was the only person dressed in a suit at a programmer's society meeting he did his little saint speil at, since I'd just come from work. I asked how you answer when someone says GNU/Linux is not user friendly. He simply denied the problem existed, and tried to make me feel stupid for asking it. In other words his solution to user support is the classic RTFM. In any case, to him I was obviously someone evil in a suit).

In short this is not a man you want speaking as the advocate for your favourite cause. All he'll do is put people off side and do more harm than good. I have little time for him as a speaker and feel he should go back to coding, which he's very good at.
