  1. You must be under 40 years old. The reason they used a synchronous motor in AC-powered electric clocks, initially, is because it didn't make any sense to have dozens of vacuum tubes, comprising an oscillator and a divider chain, along with a crystal oven to keep the oscillator from drifting over temperature, just to have a clock that's accurate. You take for granted that a SOT23-sized IC can run a 32.768kHz oscillator and give you a 1.0Hz output with single-digit PPM accuracy, and run off a single AA battery for a year.

Why the hell would I bother using some faux-Linux subsystem that runs under Windows? Isn't it just (excuse the unintentional pun) window-dressing at that point, making you feel falsely safe and cozy in your linux-wallpapered room inside the Microsoft prison? Won't there still be 'telemetry' (read as: spyware) and the usual Microsoft hegemony regardless?

Oh, I recognize all too well that all so-called 'AI' in it's current state is extremely primitive, is completely over-hyped by marketing types and the media, and as a result too many people are going to put way too much trust in it, with predictably disasterous results. Guess everyone has to learn the hard way.

  7. LOL maybe Apple will issue a DMCA takedown notice against that company and the government for reverse-engineering iPhones.
All kidding aside Apple will I'm sure just treat this like any other exploit uncovered and change their product to prevent it. Then they'll create a new tool. Welcome to the endless game of Security Whack-a-Mole.

  8. Why do I need an 'open mind' about something that is a purely personal choice for me? I don't like or want e-books or an e-book reader, period. Does it make you angry or something that you can't force your preferences on someone else? Are you on the autism spectrum, or obsessive-compulsive, neurologically incapable of accepting that someone else may have a different viewpoint on something than you do? More to the point, do you have some sort of compulsive need to 'win arguments' when someone else expresses their difference of opinion about something, not matter how inconsequential it may be? If so perhaps you need to seek some professional help.

  13. Don't really care what anybody says. I think e-books were and are still a solution looking for a problem. Even a damaged paper book is still legible most of the time. Your e-book file gets corrupted, you're out of luck, or if you drop your e-book reader and break it, you're likewise out of luck. Newer does not always mean better.

DISCLAIMER: This is JUST MY OPINION. Agree or disagree all you like.
READ EVERY WORD CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU COMMENT.

Cognitive therapy, and learning how to deal with the shit that life hands you, is a better long-term strategy than taking pills.
Furthermore: the pharmaceutical industry dearly loves people buying medication from them forever. They've been pushing antidepressants for decades now, and HMOs would rather give you a bottle of pills than have you sit down with an expensive counselor or psychiatrist and talk your way through problems, learn how to deal with things on your own.

Antidepressant medications have a place for the clinically depressed, and as a short-term stop-gap while you're learning to deal with things on your own. But otherwise I do not think people should be taking them long-term.

  22. Listen: many of us aren't so uninformed or ignorant of technical matters that we 'fear' things the way everyone else does. But the uninformed and ignorant of the world do 'fear' all sorts of things simply because they do not understand, or have been misinformed, whether by design or not. That is where the real problems could occur, and that's what we have to be careful not to perpetuate: misinformation, and irresponsible speculation about the future.
