So-called 'self driving cars' will not be the utopia some of you think it will, and I maintain that until IF and WHEN we understand how actual human brain cognition really works, none of the half-assed excuse for AI will produce a synthetic intelligence that is really 100% capable of handling the task of operating a vehicle under ALL conditions and circumstances. What basic psychology I ever learned said precisely this, that it's normal, natural, and healthy for people to want privacy, and to 'share' when it's their choice. The people who actually push that agenda also think the old saying about 'people in glass houses' is about the future of civilization, not a warning about being hypocritical. When it comes right down to it, they want to be able to break our (the common citizens) encryption -- but they (The Rich, and The Powerful) want their own unbreakable encryption. After all we're all criminals so far as they're concerned -- we just haven't been caught, tried, and incarcerated yet.
Of course what they refuse to acknowledge is that like the RIAA/MPAA (and similar), trying to stamp out 'piracy', they're playing an endless game of Whack-a-Mole; maybe they can create computers that will break even the strongest current version of encryption in no time at all, but someone else will come up with a new way to encrypt things, or otherwise protect data, that even a so-called quantum computer won't be able to crack. Then I suppose they'll just go back to dragging people behind closed doors and beating them until they give up whatever information they want them to give up -- until someone creates yet another machine to crack the new encryption; then the cycle repeats. Power-hungry and control-freak types will, sadly, always exist, at least until (if?) we evolve past it. Until then we'll have to endure these endless cycles.

However notice that most politicians benefit from those companies making as much profit as possible, and one way to do that is to keep people buying your products, and one way to do that is through planned obsolescence -- and making products impossible to repair, or creating practical and legal barriers to repairing them.
Well, we're getting close to that now if you ask me. People (and I mean 'people in general', not the techies, not the highly educated) posess fewer and fewer skills, have less knowledge in their own heads, and have little incentive to learn skills or personally know things. The reason for this is more and more 'convenience' technlologies, and, ironically, the Internet. Why bother knowing anything when you can just Google (or DuckDuckGo) it, or have your smartphone do it for you? If certain companies have their way, in a decade or so people won't even know how to operate a motor vehicle anymore (although I maintain that particular technology will ultimately fail due to using the wrong approach). Schools are more motivated to teach kids just enough to pass standardized tests (so the schools get their funding), and not so much on actually teaching them to think. To make matters worse (and to keep this comment in context), manufacturers practically go out of their way to ensure that their products can't be effectively repaired, and certainly not by the end-user, even if the end-user is otherwise skilled, and worse, many manufacturers put legal barriers in place to discourage attempts at repair and penalize anyone who attempts to disseminate information that might facilitate repair. Then there's the fact that there has been for quite some time now a growing movement towards discouraging people from actually owning many things -- but that's a totally different discussion. I fear that we're moving inexoriably towards the world of Idiocracy; it's a coin-flip at this point however whether the consequences of climate change will take us out before that happens though.

In the rush to market these so-called 'self driving cars', how many other 'incidents' have been swept under the rug, quietly settled out of court, or otherwise hushed up? We're talking about at least Google (and it's offspring) here, so 'ethics' don't particularly enter into the equation anymore. How may 'incidents' in recent days have been kept out of the headlines?
Regardless of the validity of TFA, there are steps we need to take, as a species, if we want any hope of not continuing to create our own extinction-level event.
1. Phase out all fossil fuel use. Do what you have to, to develop alternatives for all forms of transportation.
2. Develop safe nuclear power plant design. In parallel, continue to develop and refine battery technologies.
3. Tell the NIMBYs to STFU, and make that stick. (Yes, I'm saying: shove it down their throats. Too fucking bad for them, our species is at stake here.)
4. While 2 and 3 are in progress, continue to develop and deploy 'renewables' (solar, wind, etc). Mandate rooftop solar on new homes, provide incentives for existing homes.
5. While 4 is in progress: tell power companies who whine and cry about it to STFU, and make it stick. Yes, shove it down their throats, too.
6. Stay calm, and carry on.
7. Human race survives (i.e., profit!)
I have no doubt the above will pain many and produce all sorts of hate and complaints. Tough shit, I say. A little pain now is much easier to deal with than the wars over resources and liveable land later, when it's too fucking late to do anything about the mess we've made for ourselves.
Likelihood of this all happening according to my rough outline? Not gods-be-damned likely. But many of you know I'm right.
