I'm not sure of the exact speeds yet, but we are going to be experimenting with using laser for linking APs in Brismesh. Here's some links:

    http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/laser.html

    http://www.emn.org.uk/laser.htm

    http://www.n1bug.net/tech/laser/alc_wa6ejo.html

That last link explains how to get around the modulation problems that can slow down standard laser diodes. You find some of these links useful.

You can do that now. There are both RPMs and DEB packages available. There's a windows version too. Instrument approaches are near perfect, the only problem at the moment is that the active ILS is on both ends, but we are working on that.

There are only two libraries, but you need to get your OpenGL hardware accelleration going. You just get the latest stable SimGear and Plib. Then the 0.7.8 FlightGear and compile it. The stable versions do work. I'm a FlightGear developer and I use CVS which occasionally breaks, but otherwise there shouldn't be too many problems getting it to go.

To drop the visibility, I think the key is Z/shift-Z. 0.7.8 has the older panel, but the it's quite a bit better than the one in MSFS 98, and the new panel in CVS is even better. Keep away from the hills! :-)

BTW I'm going to start a website about flying in FGFS when I get time.

I personally think FlightGear is better. It's not finished, but there are aspects of the XPlane simulator that I don't think are right. For instance the clouds look 3D, but in certain circumstances you can see that they aren't really. There just some other inconsistancies that tell me that the've tried to make it look as good as they can, but the underlying stuff isn't that good.

With the FlightGear project, we are putting in the time to do it right. We will eventually have autogen and stuff like that, but we will do it better.

I do remember there is a project to make a streaming version of OpenDivX. This could be used. You would probably need a laptop to do the encoding, or a phone powered by a Transmeta chip or something.

My set up for doing something like this would be a Digital Camcorder, running into a laptop encoding it to DivX, then to the satelite phone, preferably with two or more sat phones load-sharing a multilink PPP connection.

It's probably not as portable, but if they were working out of the hotel that is being used by the foreign journalists(and is not a target) what else would you need. If you were running around the streets(and risking your life) to look at damage, then you would use the video phone, and record something, then broadcast it at higher res.
